Hedgehogs that come into the rescue in the winter(November time),that are only just over 100g have to stay with us until the spring, this makes a lot of extra work for the rescue and is also stressful on the hogs, they can be in the rescue for upto 4 months.Running a rescue is busy without having permanent residents that need a lot of care, small hedgehogs grow very fast,Button came in 5th Nov at 170g and is now 750g and ready for release,we have a few large hedgehogs ready to go back to their gardens. Please do not try and look after wildlife yourself, ask your local rescue for advice. It will be good to get these large hedgehogs back out ,so we are ready for the new arrivals and baby season.Thankyou Paula and the wildlife πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸΎ

It's national hedgehog day today, please make sure you have plenty of food and water out for your prickly visitors.Last year at the rescue we admitted a greater number of sick hedgehogs more than usual,we seem to get busier every year and the numbers we treat are increasing, lots have internal parasites but we are seeing more gardening injuries, dog attacks ,and hedgehogs getting caught in garden netting and ponds, please try and be wildlife friendly.Thankyou so much to all my followers and supporters of the rescue,I think we are in for a very busy baby season, Paula and the wildlife πŸ¦” 🐾

We have Meg,Cracker,Monica,Mable, Noel and Sprocket, poor Sprocket has had his nose sliced off by a strimmer leaving his nostrils exposed. He is back on antibiotics as he has been rubbing it and making it sore.Get well soon Chris and have a good rest and dont worry.Paula and the wildlife πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸΎπŸ¦”

One of the hogs in the rescue came in with severe ringworm, the treatment is long and time consuming. These photos are 10 days apart you can see a major difference in the skin condition and spine growth, hopefully he will be fully recovered soon.Thankyou Paula and the wildlife πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”

Our next arrival at the rescue is a small female called Fi ,she was found at the beginning of December by Michelle in her garden on Portland, all the local rescues were full so Michelle has been looking after Fi for the last few weeks, but as with juvenile hedgehogs it's not always easy to tell if they healthy, and Fi has the signs of internal parasites, her weight gain has been very slow, her poo was tested and she has lungworm and fluke.I thought it best that I take Fi and start her on some meds for the parasites, thankyou to Michelle for looking after her.Paula and the wildlife πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”

Please make sure your hedgehog houses have plenty of warm, dry, bedding inside. The night temperatures have dropped and hogs will be looking for shelter and maybe somewhere to hibernate, if they are still awake. Please keep putting food and water out for those hogs still out and about.Thankyou Paula and the wildlife πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸŽ„

We often talk about internal parasites in hedgehogs and wildlife,a small amount is fine and they can cope with these, but an over burden can kill.A lot of sick hedgehogs can have a couple of these parasites or can have all of them. You may notice nasty looking poo in the garden that can be light or dark green or slimey or bubbly and can have blood in,this can be a sign of internal parasites.I have put some magnified pictures(from google) on this post of the main parasites.Thankyou Paula and the wildlife πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”

I would like to wish all my followers, supporters and friends of the rescue a very HAPPY 2024.β™₯️
This year has been crazy busy, especially with all the very sick juvenile hedeghogs and tiny babies,I hopefully will be here for another year of rescuing. This year has been very challenging with fund raising and all our events were very quiet, luckily I have had some very kind donations and sold some of my craft items. As a self funding rescue the cost of living crisis has not helped us at all.
I WISH YOU ALL THE VERY BEST FOR 2024 ,please look after your wildlife and I'm here for any advice and help you might need, thankyou so much Paula and the Wildlife πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸΎβ™₯️

This is ringworm in close up on one of our poorly hogs he is nearly completely bald, ringworm can cause fur loss, spine loss, cracked skin, dry skin that can come off in clumps, bleeding and infected skin.If you see a balding or patchy spined hog,ask your local rescue for advice, without their spines they are open to predators, the treatment can take months to work in a severe case, thankyou Paula and the wildlife πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸŽ„πŸΎπŸ¦”

⚠️POO PICS ATTACHED⚠️ An update on the little tick hog Steve, this is what he did overnight and its not good,he has coccidia and fluke, and lungworm these parasites will kill a hedgehog if left untreated.A hedgehog can have a few parasites which is normal but an overburden will make them very sick.I have started him on meds and now we will have to see if he is strong enough to fight them.If you see any hedgehog poo that you are worried about, take a picture and ask your local rescue for advice. Fingers crossed for Steve thankyou Paula and the wildlife πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸŽ„πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸŽ„

Our latest arrival is a sick male hedgehog called Steve,he was spotted led out in a front garden on Portland. Steve weighs 366g and is muddy so I'm wondering if he was asleep somewhere and has woken up.He is very lethargic and thin and covered in very large ticks,he is also possibly full of internal parasites.Thankyou to Chris and Zack for picking him up and looking after him,I have removed all the ticks and started him on some meds, thankyou so much Paula and the wildlife πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸŽ„

If you find a sick hedeghog led out in the day, here is what to do.
Carefully put the hedgehog in a high sided box with a towel.
Put a warm heat source under the towel or under the box.
Do not try to syringe water or food into the hedgehogs mouth.
Phone your local rescue or vet immediately, do not try to keep or treat the hedgehog yourself for days.
Timing can make all the difference between the hedgehog dying and recovering.
Thankyou so much Paula and the wildlife. πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ¦”

We still have lots of hedgehogs in the rescue at the moment, but the mad autumn rush is slowing down, the hogs that are coming in now are very sick, they have either tried to hibernate but have been to small or they have gone to sleep sick with internal parasites. Please keep an eye on any small hogs that are still out and about ,especially if out in the day or laying outside. Please keep putting food and fresh water out,if you have any concerns contact your local rescue for advice, thankyou so much Paula and the wildlife πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸŽ„
