We all know that exercising enough is really important - but have you ever tried the Nordic walking technique?

According to the NHS, adults aged 19 to 64 should do some sort of physical activity every single day and should be aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity a week. That's why the Nordic walking technique is great, as it takes all the benefits of normal walking, and turns the intensity up a notch so you can really feel your heart racing.

Incorporating Nordic walking poles into your exercise routine means your upper body is also incorporated into your workout, guaranteeing your stroll will become more intensive. So, if you hate the gym, but want a more intense exercise regime than simply walking, this could be perfect for you. And as it's National Walking Month in May it's the perfect time to give it a go. By harnessing your arm swing in the movement of walking, you're creating a "full-body building workout", as you're mimicking "a very similar pattern as cross-country skiers but on dry land".

Nordic walking "aims to increase the intensity [of your workout], jack up your heart rate, and even burn additional calories", so if you want to take things to the next level, it could be the perfect method.

Nordic walking poles cost from around £35 which for many people is a month's gym membership, and you could see the benefits within no time. It has been described as "low impact", yet it can help greatly improve "cardiovascular health and performance", and can even be a fantastic way to make friends.
Nordic walking provides a massive opportunity for many people to improve metrics such as resting heart rate, blood pressure, body mass, and quality of life. It's recommended that you find the right length of pole for your body, as then you'll be able to reap the benefits.

Nordic walking is low impact -
Nordic walking may be a good alternative to traditional forms of cardio exercise for those with joint pain or arthritis.

While walking, the poles help redistribute weight and can help reduce joint loading and increase muscular strength. This may help reduce the pain that typically comes with prolonged high impact exercise, such as running.

Though some people may find using the poles beneficial, some research argues there’s little difference between traditional walking and Nordic walking when it comes to impact on the joints, however once you have walked with Nordic poles it's hard to walk without them.

Nordic walking can be good for heart health-
Nordic walking is an excellent low impact option for those wishing to increase their cardiovascular fitness.

By also using your upper-body muscles, your body requires more blood to be pumped out through your heart, thus requiring greater use of your cardiorespiratory system.

Despite this, Nordic walking appears to only slightly increase your rate of perceived exhaustion (RPE) compared with traditional walking — meaning you don’t notice a large difference in intensity despite your body working harder, does this mean you can walk further for a wee bit longer? Maybe!!

In one small review of eight studies in people with heart disease, those in Nordic walking programs showed significantly improved exercise capacity, exercise duration, and oxygen uptake compared with those in standard cardiac rehabilitation programs.

Another study in heart failure patients showed significant improvements in V̇O₂ max (a measure of lung capacity), in exercise duration, and on a 6-minute walking test in those who participated in a Nordic walking program, compared with the control group.

Full-body workout
Nordic walking targets the muscles of the upper and lower body, making it an excellent full-body workout.

Both traditional walking and Nordic walking use lower-body muscles, such as the calves, hamstrings, buttocks, and quadriceps. Interestingly, Nordic walking appears to activate these muscles more effectively.

In addition, the use of Nordic walking poles helps activate the upper-body muscles, such as the latissimus dorsi (lats), trapezii (traps), forearm flexors, pectoralis majors, deltoids, and triceps. It’s also more effective at targeting your abdominal muscles.

In fact, one study found that office workers who practiced Nordic walking for 12 weeks had greater shoulder mobility and reduced pain in their traps, lats, and infraspinatus (a part of the rotator cuff).

Interestingly, one study found that Nordic walking does not activate the erector spinae (lower back) muscles as much as traditional walking. Therefore, for those with lower back tension, Nordic walking may be a better option.

Why not give Nordic walking a try?

Why Nordic Walk as part of a group

Nordic Walking is a full-body exercise that involves walking with specialised walking poles that provide additional support and resistance. This low-impact activity is great for people of all ages and fitness levels and is quickly gaining popularity worldwide. While Nordic walking can be done on your own, joining a professionally led group can offer a wide range of extra benefits.

Improve your technique

A group led by professional Nordic Walking Instructors can provide you with guidance on the correct technique, ensuring that you get the most out of your workout while also reducing the risk of injury.

Social Interaction

Joining a Nordic Walking group can offer a great opportunity for social interaction. You will have the chance to meet new people with similar interests, and you can work together to achieve your fitness goals. The group environment can be motivating and inspiring, encouraging you to achieve more than you would on your own.

You'll have a set schedule, and the group environment will encourage you to show up and give it your all.

Improved Cardiovascular Health

Nordic walking is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise. When done correctly, it can help improve your heart health by increasing your heart rate and improving your overall fitness level. Your British Nordic walking instructor can help you get the most out of your workout by setting a pace that is challenging but achievable.

Reduced Stress

Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and improve your mental health. Nordic Walking is no exception. When you join a group you'll have the chance to get outside and immerse yourself in nature while getting your exercise in and have no worries about getting lost. This can be a great way to clear your mind and reduce stress.

Improved Posture and Balance

Nordic Walking requires good posture and balance. When done correctly, it can help improve your overall posture and balance. Your instructor can provide you with feedback on your technique and help you make adjustments as needed.

Reduced Risk of Injury

Joining a professionally led Nordic Walking group can help reduce the risk of injury. You'll have guidance on proper technique and form, and the group environment can encourage you to take things at a pace that is safe for you.

I speak to Marion Endt-Jones, who runs NordicFit+ in Manchester. As well as teaching art history and working as a German language tutor, Marion trained as a ski instructor in Germany in the mid 90s. She began Nordic Walking in the summer of 2004 with her local ski club, as a social off-season activity, and has never stopped. She qualified as an instructor with British Nordic Walking in 2016 and is also a certified fitness and Exercise Referral instructor.

Marion has experienced the health benefits of Nordic Walking first hand: Nordic Walking has helped her during and after her two pregnancies, through her diagnosis with degenerative arthritis in her left knee and with MS, which is the subject of this podcast.
