Sibley and Ward LTD
RHS award winning garden design, landscaping and maintenance service.
As promised! A few before and after photos of the large job posted about previously. It's not often we get a completely blank canvas like this. We are very happy with the results!
A warning for local gardens. If you have noticed your box plant has patches of damage like the picture below then you probably have box moth caterpillars. The caterpillars shown in the other picture are voracious eaters and can strip a box plant in days if left unchecked. It often will lead to the death of the plant, though it can recover if the new growth is not hit by another wave of caterpillars. We have seen enitre box hedge rows destroyed by them. They had reached the Berkhamsted area two years ago, finding their way to Cheddington last year and now up to Mentmore this year. If you notice the signs of damage check the plant regularly, removing and disposing of any you find. A pheremone trap (which we can supply) can be used to ensure the moths are caught before laying eggs and prevent further damage. Please get in touch!
Well, time certainly has flown since our last post! While we have been absent from here, we have been extremely busy completing some fantastic projects. One's such as this! A brand new build in Hertfordshire, the plot was a complete muddy blank slate when we started. The entire garden was designed, built and planted by us. Large format porcelain seating areas, winding self binding gravel paths through white gravel and forest gardens, cotswold stone gabion steps, this project was a really fun one to get our teeth into. It will be a great one to see again in a few years, once the planting has had chance to mature. We will post some before and after pictures in the next few days and the other projects we've been working on so watch this space.
If your garden is in need of a re-design or update then get it touch to see how we can help you!
The team transformed this area from a waterlogged rose bed and lawn, to a smart timber effect paved area with surrounding reclaimed sleeper borders. We installed a large land drain along the base of the hill, just above this area, to divert rainfall away and utilise the areas potential! 🌱
We've been extremely busy recently! So it's about time to post some of the jobs we've completed. You'll remember this one from the work in progress posts previously! The client and ourselves couldn't be happier with how this one turned out. A complete garden redesign by ourselves, terracing the garden to make the area more usable. Each terrace adding its own interest, from a shaped lawn, to herbaceous border, to alpine rockery with a water feature. It also features a herb garden, a sheltered courtyard and a sun loving border.
The final photos show how the garden was previously. There will be more work to come on this garden, so watch this space.

We were back at this job in Cheddington this week. Things are really starting to take shape now as we approach the final design. It's amazing how much change adding the soil and turf to a garden makes. The turf will be cut into shape shortly and the planting will soon be in! Keep an eye out in the coming days for another project we've been working on.
Things have been hectic the last month so please excuse the lack of posts!
We were called in last week, to fix a very poorly laid porcelain patio. No effort had been made to create a solid foundation on which to lay. It had been laid directly onto sand, with no mortar and no priming slurry, essential when laying porcelain to ensure a secure bond to the base. Unfortunately and not surprisingly the slabs were not level to each other and moved under foot.
The team lifted the slabs and dug down to the correct depth, filled and compacted to ensure the solid foundation. It was then re-laid with priming slurry and a mortar bed. A raised bed was installed along the edge and we left with a very happy client!
The first 3 pictures show the original state of the patio, with the final 2 showing how we transformed the area.

A wet ending to the week but the patio is filled in and the bed paths are laid! All achieved with porcelain tiles. Just a small area to finish laying now and then the grouting begins. The customer and the team are really pleased with how it's looking so far!
Progress this week after a windy start! The team has been laying porcelain paving and capping the wall. Solid foundations are also in place for the paths that will wind through the plant borders. Starting to take shape!
The team started work on this full garden redesign in Cheddington this week. The clients have just had an extension built and contacted us to design and landscape an updated outdoor space. This project will be completed in steps, so watch this space!
