Its Insect Week! ๐๐๐
Peatlands provide habitats for a whole host of creepy crawlies who can play many roles from pollinators to predators.
The presence of particular bog insects such as the Large Heath Butterfly feed almost exclusively on Hare's tail cottongrass and are indicators of a healthy bog ๐ฆ๐ฟ
Tell us in the comments what your favourite bog insect is!

Our latest venture has taken us to Prestwick Carr, collecting peat depths in partnership with MoD and EA๐๐ฑ
The site has some very interesting features, creatures and noises - and some VERY confident deer ๐ฆ (๐ฝ๏ธ credit )
Prestwick Carr hosts peat depths greater than 8m (making it over 8,000 years old!) but previous land drainage and tree plantation has massively impacted the peat quality here.
The peat is drying out to the extent of burning in the summer and incapable of storing water in the winter, leading to carbon being emitted๐ฅ๐ง๏ธ
The survey work the NPP is doing here will help to inform a restoration plan to start repairing the damage caused and focusing on the future benefits Prestwick Carr can hold ๐ฎ
On Friday we took a trip to Ingram Valley with Navigate UK to take part in a Navigation Training day ๐บ๏ธ๐งญ
We started the day with very little knowledge surrounding maps, bearings and compasses and spent the day building on our confidence and putting our newfound skills into practice ๐ช
Big thanks to Peter for sharing his skills and putting up with us taking a very rogue path down valley slopes and across watercourses! ๐ป๐

๐๐ May 22nd marks International Day for Biodiversity 2024 ๐๐
This year's theme is 'Be Part of the Plan' - calling on everyone to highlight the ways in which they are supporting the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan ๐๏ธ
At the NPP we are helping to move towards the 2050 vision where biodiversity is 'valued, conserved, restored and widely used' by surveying and producing restoration plans to bring our peatlands back to being a successful carbon store that hosts a wide array of biodiversity.
Here are some of the NPP's favourite biodiversity pics!! ๐ฆ๐๐ป

๐ฃ The NPP are hosting a two-part workshop alongside WaterLANDS (University of Leeds) for land managers to generate knowledge about the Northumberland uplands ๐ฃ
The workshop will be held on Saturday 11 May, 10.45am - 3pm and Saturday 18 May, 10.45am - 1pm with refreshments and lunch provided โ
The aim is to understand in what ways these landscapes are important to people practically engaged with them on a daily basis, and how this might relate to different ways of using the land, including peatland restoration.
We hope that land managers will share their knowledge and experience during facilitated discussions, and a site visit. You are welcome to bring along family and friends also involved in land management - although for health and safety reasons, we cannot accommodate children under the age of 18.
If you are interested in attending please sign up by Thursday 9 May using this link: https://lnkd.in/eqJEkz7D

๐ The Border Mires ๐
The Border Mires is comprised of 58 separate sites, 34 of which have been surveyed by the NPP's survey team.
Over its history, these mires have undergone many changes due to historical drainage, peat extraction and afforestation. Surveying these sites will help us to produce restoration plans and continue the restoration and monitoring that has been ongoing for the past 50 years ๐ชจ๐จ
The mires host a diverse array of plants, sphagnum mosses and fascinating fungi, highlighting just how important it is to restore these sites to their natural state ๐๐ฟ
Natural England's Peatland Team have created a free to play digital game for children! ๐ฎ
The game follows a welly-clad lapwing named 'Peat' on its journey to bring the peat bog back to its natural state and find the perfect site for nesting ๐ฆ๐ชน
This fun and interactive game will engage and educate a younger audience, helping spread awareness about the importance of our peatland habitats ๐ง๐ฑ

Happy Earth Day! ๐
Today we celebrate our precious planet and the incredible host of species it can support. Earth Day marks the importance of taking environmental conservation action now to ensure a brighter future โจ
Peatlands are one of the planet's strongest allies, storing over 3 billion tonnes of carbon in the UK alone - helping us in the fight against climate change โ๏ธ๐ฑ

Itโs official! The Northumberland Peat Partnership (NPP) has now surveyed over 10,000 hectares (the equivalent of 12,355 football pitches) of peatland across Northumberland.

Today is ๐๐ฃ
This brown, speckled creature with its downcurved bill acts as a real mascot for our beloved peatlands ๐ง๐ฑ
The distinctive 'cur-lee' call of the curlew can be heard in our favourite wetland habitats from February to July ๐ผ
However, what was once a common sight and sound across the UK and Ireland is now much rarer. The curlew is now listed as 'high conservation priority' due to their dwindling numbers.
So this World Curlew Day why not spread the word about curlews? We need to begin taking responsibility for the anthropogenic activities that have led to their decline and working out solutions to allow this species to thrive once again โฌ๏ธ๐

PEAT IN PARLIAMENT ๐ฃ
Next week, a bill that seeks to ban peat sales will be introduced to parliament.
Despite the UK Government's 2022 consultation showing overwhelming support for a ban, their promise to ban peat sales "by 2024" has not been met.
A ban would:
๐ Deliver on UK Gov's commitment
๐ Reduce harmful emissions from peat extraction
๐ Protect important wildlife habitat
Rishi Sunak, please take this chance to and to help natureโs recovery.
