Is there ever any justification for “painful” massage using pressure that’s beyond the tolerance of your client?
There is no clear justification for painfully intense “deep tissue” massage and it can even be contraindicated to some people with underlying medical conditions.
The pressure question is complicated by the paradox of “good” pain, a huge variance in client tolerance and the common thinking “no pain, no gain”.
“Good pain” is at the heart of the pressure question and something many people expect during a sports or remedial type massage.
“Bad pain” can be unpleasant but manageable and probably safe to tolerate cautiously, but only to a point.
“Ugly pain” is dangerous both physically and neurologically, causing a “fight or flight” reaction in our nervous system. This should always be avoided.
Most people can’t tell the difference between the kind of good pain that might be a necessary part of therapy, and ugly pain that is just abusive and dangerous.
We cannot bully muscles into submission by pummelling them physically. We have to work with the client’s nervous system - engaging the parasympathetic nervous system to down regulate stress for a start.
Pressure that’s fine for you may cause severe pain or even bruising in others. Massage treatments should be always be tailored to each client but sadly in some practices, it isn’t.
We teach our students the importance of developing a good therapeutic relationship with their clients: checking in regularly for pain or discomfort ensuring the client feels in control and should never just “grin and bear it” they have a clear understanding of when and how to give a deeper massage - safely and above all, they should be able to explain WHY they are doing what they’re doing.
If your therapist can’t explain a technique to you in layman’s terms, they probably don’t understand the dynamics themselves and are merely copying something seen on a YouTube video.
Dangerous and unprofessional.

2023 is round the corner, me & my clients are preparing for a strong start💪🏽
This Offer is Available until end of January.
A gentle reminder about why you are utterly exhausted…
No one I know began this year on a full tank. Given the vicious onslaught of the previous two years (let’s just call it what it was) most of us dragged ourselves across the finish line of 2021… frazzled, spent, running on aged adrenaline fumes…
We crawled into 2022 still carrying shock, trauma, grief, heaviness, disbelief… The memories of a surreal existence…
And then it began… The fastest hurricane year we could ever have imagined. Whether we have consciously processed it or not, this has been a year of more pressure, more stress, and a race to “catch up” in all departments… Every. Single. One. Work, school, sports, relationships, life…
Though not intentionally aware, perhaps hopeful that the busier we are, the more readily we will forget… the more easily we will undo the emotional tangle… the more permanently we will wipe away the scarring wounds…
We can’t.
And attempts to re-create some semblance of “normal” on steroids while disregarding that for almost two years our sympathetic nervous systems were on full alert, has left our collective mental health in tatters. Our children and teens are not exempt. The natural byproduct of fighting a hurricane is complete and utter exhaustion…
So before you begin questioning the absolutely depleted and wrung-dry state you are in - Pause. Breathe. Remind yourself of who you are and what you have endured. And then remind yourself of what you have overcome.
Despite it all, you’re still going. (Even on the days you stumble and find yourself face down in a pile of dirt).
Understanding brings compassion…
Most of the world’s citizens are in need of a little extra TLC at the moment. Most are donning invisible “Handle with care” posters around their necks and “Fragile” tattoos on their bodies…
Instead of racing to the finish line of this year, tread gently. Go slowly.
Amidst the chaos, find small pockets of silence. Find compassion. Allow the healing. And most of all… Be kind. There’s no human being on earth who couldn’t use just a little bit more of the healing salve of kindness.
With love. ♥️
I needed to read this today - hope it helps you if you need it too. ♥️

Something to think about
WHAT IS FASCIA
It’s a body-wide tissue that surrounds, separates and protects everything else.
WHY THE RISE TO FAME?
Until only a few years ago, fascia was thought as nothing more than a packing tissue and was discarded during dissection. However, science and research eventually discovered that value of this ubiquitous tissue through enhanced laboratory imaging and analysis. It became more and more clear that fascia touched every other tissue in the human body and, it was therefore directly involved in every physiological process.
FASCIA AND FUNCTION
For us as manual therapists, appreciating that fascia surrounds and connects muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons and helps to create glide between them, we can work with our clients in a more holistic manner.
THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF THE PARTS (Aristotle)
Fascia can't be affected in isolation. It is thought however, that fascia can be better targeted by a slow and gentle manual therapy approach like the sustained approach used in myofascial release. It is thought that this is because the fasciae has a protective property in that it serves to disperse forces along its matrix; it ebbs and flows through varying levels of tension dependant on forces imposed on it. Push too hard and the fascia resists. Lean into the body with a slow and gentle pressure and fascia will slowly respond. How exactly this happens, we don't yet fully know but it could be cellular exchanges, fluid dynamics, thixotropy and neuroreflexive and or mechanosensitive input.
The entire body is far more than just the fascia. Everything plays a valuable role and everything makes the unique person on your treatment table. Treat the person, not just their muscles or their bones or their fascia. Keep client focused.💜💙💚
