🌟🌟 Yoga Class 🌟🌟

Are you thinking of making your wellbeing a priority this year and investing in your physical and mental health?

Yoga has many proven benefits and might be a useful practise to help you achieve any goals you may have set yourself when it comes to improving your health this year.

Research has shown that, amongst other things, yoga can:

🧘‍♀️ lower stress levels
🧘‍♀️ lower and keep blood pressure low
🧘‍♀️ increase bone density
🧘‍♀️ increase muscle strength
🧘‍♀️ improve sleep

In fact, attending a yoga class has been shown to reduce the risk of social isolation, improve cardivascular health and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes!

If this sounds like a good investment then I'll be back at the church hall, Belgrave Road (next to St Peter's Church) on Monday 8th January, 9:30 - 10:30.

The class is suitable for beginners through to more experienced practitioners. It's worth keeping in mind that yoga is not just about the physical postures, we use breathing techniques, meditation and relaxation techniques alongside physical movement. Everything can be modified to suit the individual.

I have over 16 years of experience teaching yoga having qualified with the British Wheel of Yoga.

Message me if you'd like more information.

Happy New Year!

A few days enjoying the delights that my local environment has to offer, the beach, the forest and my garden.

When I'm done with putting my feet up this summer break I'm thinking of starting up a new yoga class in Seaford. I'm interested to know if any of my regulars from previous years would be interested. It's most likely to be a Tuesday or Wednesday morning, location to be confirmed. ❤️🧘‍♀️

Peas!

25/06/2023

I absolutely love this plant in my garden. It goes to sleep in the evening when the sun goes down and closes all its flower heads. Drought resistant too. It trails over a wall. Truly glorious.

The biggest homegrown haul so far this year.

We grew the grape vines over the pergola to give us some shade in our south facing garden. Things have gotten out of control!

I pulled a lot of the purple trailing flowers out of the wall last year and planted lavender in the gaps in the patio instead. I instantly regretted it so I'm very pleased it's returned this year.

Check out the sweetcorn bed though, my most favourite thing we grow at home. Yesterday we had our first cucumbers of the season!

The 'working' ends of the garden where everything is left to nature. It's also where the apple trees live. Beautiful in its own disorganised way. The bumble bees love it down here and I spotted a little mouse yesterday!

One of my favourite places, my garden. All the vegetables are my partner's hard work, but design wise, it's always been a joint effort. Such a happy place to hang out.

It won't be long till we're bringing in the produce from all our hard work.

This is some of the gifts from last year's productive season in the garden. At the moment we're being provided with an abundance of spinach and salad leaves.

Springtime in the garden. This is my absolute favourite time of year in our garden, everything is springing into life and the sunshine brings everything into sharp focus.

Late spring in the garden. This is my absolute favourite time in our garden, everything is bursting into life now. Sunny days bring it into sharp focus.

The garden is just starting to come back to life, and in a way so am I. The sunshine this weekend has been a welcome blessing, fingers crossed for more to come.

At last!

Mornings are a challenge for me. It can go one of two ways. If it's a morning when I have to be somewhere for a certain time, and get other people in the house ready too, I generally wake up anxious and launch into the day at full speed. It will be normal for that anxiety to build as the routine progresses and I will leave the house feeling exhausted.

The other way in which the morning can go is that no one in the house needs to be anywhere. In this scenario the need to stick to a routine becomes less pressing. However, as I wake up the anxiety will begin to build. This time because I don't know what to do! Why do I need to get up? Is the day going to be okay? What are we going to fill the morning with. In this option I generally freeze and find it hard to do anything.

Either way, waking up anxious is not ideal. It is one of the reasons why I find it hard to find space in my mornings for any of the practices I know will set a positive and calmer tone for the rest of the day.

So in order to short circuit these feelings of anxiety on waking I'm trying something new. Each morning when I wake up, I come downstairs and I light a candle. My aim is to sit and watch the flame for 2 minutes. What I'm finding is, after 2 minutes of watching the flame, I close my eyes and I take a few moments to do a breathing practice. I'm then finding I take a moment to move my spine in all it's directions and work with some neck movements. Sometimes I'm going to my feet up (I'm practising being upside down as I'm gearing up for some headstand practices soon) and I might also lie across my bolster to open my chest.

Ultimately the lighting of the candle is the only goal. It's like a full stop at the end of my sleep and a space before I ease into the day, preventing the anxiety from slipping in.

I chose the candle as candle gazing (trataka) is one of the shatkarmas or cleansing practices in yoga. I've always found this particular practice incredibly calming. Interestingly, it's said to eradicate fatigue and lethargy. Intuitively I must have felt this. I'll post more about this practice soon.

Let me know of any ways that help you to start the day in a positive way. 🕯️🧘‍♀️

If I wasn't finding myself short of time already, I can guarantee I will be from the beginning of March!

I'll be picking up the training I began 11 years ago, and I hope that over the next 3 years I'll be a qualified and certified Counsellor.

It's quite a long and time consuming process and not something I'm entering lightly. I hope that one day I will be able to share a service that integrates all that I know about working with the body and mind to help people to live the best version of their lives they can.

It's going to be even more important for me to develop a routine of self care over the coming weeks so that the addition of studying into the mix doesn't become overwhelming.

02/02/2023

I'm feeling the effects of a weekend away with friends! Unfortunately, a few late nights have left my immune system low and a sore throat has taken hold. I'm in bed reading about ways to beat the winter blues as January and February always envelop me in a cloud of grey unease and it's a struggle to fight my way through the murkiness.

So today I have found my way back to insta because I have some time, for the first time in months, to post something and to browse. My side step away from teaching yoga and Pilates has been a challenge and has meant that my connection to both has become almost none existent. I've gone from teaching multiple sessions a day to nothing. Zilch. I'm hoping that I can reconnect in some way and that I can use this platform to share what I know to be true about the benefits of both of these magical practices and that by some kind of osmosis, the sharing of that truth will flow back into me. It's got to be worth a try at least.

What this lack of connection to both yoga and Pilates has taught me, is how important that connection is to me. As well as my sore throat, right now I also have sciatica and plantar fasciitis. The reason I have this is because my mind is stressed. My mind is stressed because I have lost the release I had through yoga and Pilates. Consequently my body is reacting to that stress by becoming inflamed and this is causing tightness in my muscles, because I'm not stretching them. It's a vicious cycle. My body always exhibits stress in a physical way when my mind is ill at ease. So here I am.

There never seems to be enough time to fit the practice in. The fact of the matter is, I'm choosing not to make time. It's there, it's always there if you really want it, but currently, motivation is weak. The difficult part is finding that motivation and introducing a new way of practising and making that habit stick. I think I'll have to start small and find just 5 minutes.

If anyone has any suggestions on what I can share and how I can find some snippets of time to practice, I would be so interested to hear.

To all the lovely yoga and Pilates people in my world.
Life has taken a turn down a different path and, for a while, I will be storing away my mats, blocks, bands and balls.
I will be going back to school in September, taking on the role of TA at my daughter's school.
My oldest has been having a struggle with school and it has been a challenge for all of us. The hope is that having my presence in school will help her settle. We will see!
Giving up something that I love so much slightly breaks my heart, but I'm always up for a challenge and I'm sure taking a stroll down this new route will bring new insights and set me on a trajectory I can't yet foresee. Life never stands still for very long.
I'm a qualified primary school teacher, so working in schools, with schools and with young people, has featured storgly in my life over the years. It is something I love and enjoy so this is something I am looking forward to.
No doubt I will find some way to continue to teach. I've been teaching yoga for over 16 years and Pilates for over 4, I can't see how I can stop completely! It will be a matter of seeing what fits in where and how.
For now though, thank you to all those people who have come to a class or helped me on my journey to teach yoga and Pilates. I am so grateful to have spent my time doing what I love.
Sending love to you all. 🙏🧘‍♀️
