Friends of MSF Belfast
MSF was founded in France in 1971 by a small group of doctors and journalists who believed that all people should have access to emergency medical care.
Friends of MSF is a student-led society at QUB supporting the work of Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) through fundraising and raising awareness of their important work. It often operates in difficult geographical or political contexts - they go where others cannot or choose not to go.

Introducing our guest speaker...
Ian Atkinson
Ian works as a logistician for Medecin sans Frontier (MSF). He began working for MSF in this role in 2005 during a 9-month overseas post to Burundi, in East Africa. Since then he has done 9 more projects ranging from 3 months to 3 weeks in length, working in a variety of logistic roles including water and sanitation, distribution, construction, and as an all-round logistician. Of the 10 projects, he has done with MSF, 4 involved natural disasters: Pakistan (flood in 2010), Nepal (earthquake in 2015), Mozambique (hurricane in March 2019), and South Sudan (flood in 2020).
When not actively on duty with MSF, Ian spends his time working in England as a self-employed forester and builder.
Read about Ian’s work in this article he wrote: “A Fear of Home” - https://blogs.msf.org/bloggers/ian/fear-home
Join us on Thursday 18th February at 7pm for an engaging talk that explores how natural disasters influence the ways in which a medical/healthcare worker must approach their work, and how MSF uses logistics and purposeful decision making to better apparent circumstances.

Want to learn more about Human Trafficking in NI? Join us on our next event on; 🌟Wednesday 10th February 🌟
What is Human Trafficking?
Human trafficking is Modern day slavery. Due to recent news events, we believe this issue must be raised and addressed.
Why would this topic be relevant to you?
Medical professionals are in a key role to identify these victims, care for them and lead them to safety yet. We believe education in this area is therefore crucial to work towards dressing this issue.
This session will equip you with insight into the issue and practical knowledge on how to identify, care for and help trafficking victims. Invisible traffic, a local advocate for change and educator of spotting trafficking victims will be joining us to explain what we can all do to help. Hope to see you there!
Introducing our guest speaker...
Mary-Flowa Houldsworth
Mary simply wanted to make difference, not knowing that her journey with MSF would lead her to be held at gunpoint, contract malaria, almost die from typhoid, survive in conflict-zones and see unspeakable human suffering. She is a true hero who is ready to share her experience with us!
"My mission with MSF, working as a nurse/midwife, began during the conflicts in Liberia, South Sudan, and Afghanistan. I took unpaid leave from the NHS to join teams working in conflict zones, treating displaced people who had walked for days to bring their severely ill relatives to the only healthcare facilities available. In a further mission, I worked in Ethiopia where the famine in the north of the country affected both adults and children.
When the outbreak of Ebola occurred in West Africa I undertook missions in Liberia at the height of the outbreak, and Sierra Leone as a health promoter. For two months in 2018 I joined the emergency team in Ethiopia where we assessed and treated thousands of internally displaced people.
When I’m not working overseas, my free time is spent giving talks for MSF, rowing with gig crews on the river Torridge, kayaking, and excavating local archaeological sites."
Read more about how Mary spent six weeks working with Ebola victims in Liberia – and then was ostracised when she got home.
