HIDDEN NOTES RECORDS:

Super happy to announce that Fran & Flora have joined the Hidden Notes Records family!

The music of multi-award-nominated experimental/contemporary folk string duo Fran & Flora sits in two camps: both steeped in tradition, with material drawn directly from archival recordings, recovered manuscripts and years of study with the masters, whilst simultaneously garnering a contemporary and avant-garde aesthetic, speaking to the more classical and experimental listener. Fran & Flora inject their source material with drones, loops, free improvisation and electronics to create a ‘border-defying’ (Mojo) sound.

As string players Fran & Flora’s collaborations together and separately includes performing with the likes of Tom Skinner, Portico Quartet, Imogen Heap, Riz Ahmed, Sam Lee, Talvin Singh, Jocelyn Pook, Hannah Peel and The Vernon Spring. Within the global Klezmer community they have worked with the likes of Zoe Aqua, London Klezmer Quartet, Sashe Lurje, Craig Judelman, Merlin & Polina Shepherd and Frank London, contributing to ongoing research and revival work, and have taught at Klezmer music camps including at Klezfest London.

Looking forward to releasing their sophomore album in 2024...More info coming soon! 💚

ANOTHER ANNOUNCEMENT!

Happy to announce that our friend Edith Bowman will be chairing the Q&A with Leah Broad at this years festival!

HN VOL.3
LEAH BROAD - QUARTET CHAIRED BY EDITH BOWMAN
24.09.23
SVA

The lives, loves, adventures and trailblazing musical careers of four extraordinary women from a stunning debut biographer.

Ethel Smyth (b.1858): Famed for her operas, this trailblazing q***r Victorian composer was a larger-than-life socialite, intrepid traveller and committed Suffragette.

Rebecca Clarke (b.1886): This talented violist and Pre-Raphaelite beauty was one of the first women ever hired by a professional orchestra, later celebrated for her modernist experimentation.

Dorothy Howell (b.1898): A prodigy who shot to fame at the 1919 Proms, her reputation as the ‘English Strauss’ never dented her modesty; on retirement, she tended Elgar’s grave alone.

Doreen Carwithen (b.1922): One of Britain’s first woman film composers who scored Elizabeth II’s coronation film, her success hid a 20-year affair with her married composition tutor.

In their time, these women were celebrities. They composed some of the century’s most popular music and pioneered creative careers; but today, they are ghostly presences, surviving only as muses and footnotes to male contemporaries like Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Britten – until now.

Leah Broad’s magnificent group biography resurrects these forgotten voices, recounting lives of rebellion, heartbreak and ambition, and celebrating their musical masterpieces. Lighting up a panoramic sweep of British history over two World Wars, Quartet revolutionises the canon forever.

NEW RELEASE: To Will A Space Into Being by Josh Semans

Pre-order the new album on limited edition transparent 180g vinyl today via bandcamp
........................................................................................................................................

Following his debut album and two EPs, Hidden Notes Records are proud to announce the release of Josh Semans’ sophomore full-length album; To Will A Space Into Being.

Released on September 15th 2023, the album comprises ondes Martenot, Juno 6, and a string quartet, represented visually by manipulated AI imagery.

For his latest project, Josh has created a world that is entirely his own; combining the retro-futuristic sound of the vintage Juno 6 synthesiser; the classically-coded string quartet; and the otherworldly ondes Martenot - one of the earliest electronic instruments, born in the trenches of the First World War.

The artwork for this album has been created by Miriam Bean as part of her ‘These Places Do Not Exist’ project. Working collaboratively with artificial intelligence, she carefully prompts imagery into existence to then be curated and manipulated using a variety of digital and manual techniques. Almost 300 versions of the album artwork were made, and carefully examined before a selection was made to be worked-on.

Adam Hinks’ (graphic designer and Hidden Notes co-founder) graphical contributions to the vinyl packaging utilise similar techniques; digital text made physical, distorted by hand on the way back into the computer....

HN VOL.3
NYX
23.09.23
ST LAURENCE CHURCH

NYX is a collaborative drone choir, re-embodying live electronics and extended vocal techniques. With visceral arrangements and original compositions by Sian O’Gorman, NYX looks to reshape the role of the traditional female choir, testing the limits of organic and synthetic modulation to explore the entire spectrum of collective voice as an instrument.

Their approach to post-digital performance and composition is influenced Pauline Oliveros’s Deep Listening process, Meredith Monk’s extended vocal technique, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares’ charged harmonics, the electronic and acoustic body manipulations of Holly Herndon and the viscerality of Sunn 0)))’s ecstatic noise experiences.

NYX are a self-managed collective and independent record label that have created and performed in popular music-led interdisciplinary experiences for reputable spaces such as Hyde Park, London Design Festival, London Fashion Week, Pompidou Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Kings Place, Barbican.

With collaboration at the heart of process, NYX has made projects with musicians such as Gazelle Twin, Vessel, Holy Other, Laura Misch, Hatis Noit, Iona Fortune, LCY and designers such as Dan Tobin Smith, Rosie Hastings and Hannah Quinlin, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, Imogen Knight, Chloe Lamford, Tom Scutt and Jonathan Barnbrook.

HN VOL.3
FRAN & FLORA
23.09.23
ST LAURENCE CHURCH

Multi-award-nominated duo Fran & Flora captivate audiences with world class performances of music from across eastern-Europe and beyond. Comprising of Francesca Ter-Berg (cello / vox) and Flora Curzon (violin / vox), this ever-evolving collaboration is born out of a deep friendship, musical bond and shared interests in traditional music, improvisation and a sense of adventure. Their compositions and arrangements stem from the modes and melodies of Klezmer, Transylvanian, Romanian, Greek and Armenian music, as well as their deep dives into archival recordings and live electronics.

Their debut album Unfurl was released in February 2019. Incorporating tunes and songs collected on their travels, the album was the culmination of three years studio work with producer Sam Beste (The Vernon Spring / Hejira) where they explored their aesthetic, experimenting with interweaving textures and layers, electronics and analogue processing. In June 2020 a 5-track remix EP was released celebrating tracks from Unfurl. Remix artists included Portico Quartet, Deep Throat Choir, Dylan Henner, Enhang Ha (Berlin), The Yellow House and Dylan Henner which was championed by Mary-Anne Hobbs (BBC 6 Music). They are currently in the process of finishing their second album.

RYUICHI SAKAMOTO
24.09.23
LANSDOWN HALL

One of the most important artists of our era, Ryuichi Sakamoto had a prolific career spanning over four decades, from techno-pop stardom to Oscar-winning film composer. The evolution of his music coincided with his life journeys. Following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, Sakamoto became an iconic figure in Japan’s social movement against nuclear power. As Sakamoto returned to music following a battle with cancer, his haunting awareness of life crisis led to a resounding new masterpiece. Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda is an intimate portrait of both the artist and the man.

MANCHESTER COLLECTIVE
24.09.23
ST LAURENCE CHURCH

Known for their experimental programming and daring collaborations, the work of Manchester Collective has expanded at breakneck speed since their formation in 2016. They now play in concert halls, gig venues and factory spaces across Europe and the UK, performing a combination of cutting edge contemporary music, classical masterpieces, and staged work to a hungry, new audience.

New music is of vital importance to the Collective – in recent years, they have commissioned major works by artists including Edmund Finnis, Hannah Peel, Lyra Pramuk, and Laurence Osborn. Highlights include their Royal Albert Hall debut as part of the 2021 BBC Proms Festival; the creation of Dark Days, Luminous Nights, a daring audio-visual installation made under lockdown with Blackhaine and Simon Buckley; and Sirocco, the international sensation featuring South African cellist Abel Selaocoe.

Manchester Collective record for the Icelandic label Bedroom Community. Their second album NEON was released on the 23rd June 2023.

For Hidden Notes vol.3 Manchester Collective will be performing Steve Reich’s cult masterpiece ‘Different Trains’ – an exploration of speech, history, and memory performed as a string quartet and live electronics.

HN VOL.3
PARTICLE SHRINE
16-17.09.23/21-24.09.23
SVA GOODS SHED

Invisible messengers from deep in the universe surround us.
These messengers are known as cosmic rays, and billions shower Earth every second, in a random way currently beyond human comprehension.
These subatomic particles are passing through you at this very moment…blazing close to the speed of light, blasted from supernovae and other astrophysical phenomena far beyond our galaxy.
By learning about them, we can learn about our origins.
Particle Shrine makes these invisible forces, visible.
Utilising new creative technologies, this installation transforms the never ending stream of cosmic ray energy into various outputs - generative 360 compositions, (powered by d&b audiotechnik’s soundscape system) vibrating surfaces, projections and lighting design.
These outputs are controlled in real-time by 5 bespoke cosmic ray detectors inside the installation, as well as by live readings from a neutrino observatory in Japan called Super Kamiokande.
The result is an experience like no other.
Particle Shrine creates an environment that’s unique each time you step inside,
a place where you could ponder these curious forces, and hopefully,
experience a sense of connection to the cosmos in the process.

Particle Shrine was created by composer and musician Christo Squier in collaboration with experimental particle physicist Teppei Katori and creative technologist Chris Ball. It was originally commissioned by the Science Gallery London in September 2022 and developed as part of artist-residences at King's College London (2021-22) and Snape Maltings / Britten Pears Arts (2021).

Presented with d&b audiotechnik soundscape

The installation is free entry for HN festival ticket holders. Tickets to non-festival ticket holders on sale soon!
