The protrusion of upper front teeth, especially when the lips don’t adequately cover them, can increase the risk of dental injuries and potentially impact a child’s self-esteem.
In such cases, timely orthodontic intervention can mitigate these risks, boosting self-confidence and potentially averting the need for more complex treatment later on.
The Twin-block functional appliance, commonly referred to as Block Braces, is highly effective in addressing such issues, particularly the protrusion of teeth (known as increased overjet).
Typically, treatment begins around age 11 for girls and 12 for boys, although individual variations exist.
If unsure, early referral for orthodontic assessment is advisable.
Treatment duration with Twin-block is generally 9 to 12 months, followed by upper and lower fixed appliance treatment (often called train-tracks).
After orthodontic treatment, wearing clear retainers part-time, usually at night, is necessary for long-term retention.
For instance, a patient with upper front teeth protruding by 12 mm over lower front teeth, deep overbite, and gaps between front teeth (as shown in the first photo) underwent Twin-block treatment starting at age 11 years and 5 months, lasting over 10 months.
This corrected the protrusion and deep bite (as seen in the second photo).
Subsequently, a 15-month course of upper and lower fixed appliance treatment aligned the dental arches and closed all gaps, without any tooth loss.
