Sharing Mckenzie

Today is , created to mark the arrival of a ship bearing the name & used to depict the start of the movement of half a million people from the Caribbean to the UK between 22 June 1948 & the 1 January 1973, British Subjects until the enactment of both Commonwealth Immigration Acts of 1962 & 1968. Both acts were a direct response to the growing opposition to the presence of Black & Brown people in the UK, with recent legislative changes in immigration & asylum laws having echoes of this past.

They'll be outpourings by those who hate the mention of the day as it undermines the true history of the Black presence in the UK, a history which predates the Windrush ship by centuries, & which includes people in scholarship, the military, seafarers, theology, the royal family, the arts, the kidnapped & enslaved, & people living ordinary lives. There are others who wince at the fact that the day is overshadowed by wall to wall coverage of the .

I am sympathetic to those who worked hard to create a day of learning & celebration, only to find the one story dominating the headlines. But the scandal sums up aptly one of the more important experiences of those who we call the Windrush generation, for shorthand, that of exposure to the worst kind of racism & discrimination, even at the hands of some of those operating in the Windrush space - more on that another day.

The scandal continues to be a shame & a stain on the UK's conscience, more so because of the failure to resolve this. The beleaguered compensation scheme no doubt adds to the problem, but so does the lack of meaningful engagement to ensure that those affected by this scandal are reached & helped to achieve confirmation of their immigration status.

Various Home Secretaries promised to resolve the scandal. Sajid Javid offered an apology & to be fair to him, was open to meeting individual families affected by the scandal. Priti Patel also apologized, but dismantled a progressive working group set up to look at a resolution & improvements. Suella Braverman, well ..., sought instead to demonize & put at risk, those of us working with the hundreds of victims, then went as far as to tear up some of the recommendations in the Windrush Lessons Learned Review, only to be told by a High Court Judge, yet again, that some of her acts were unlawful. James Cleverly has been silent but may well have thought there was little point ...

Last Thursday, Yvette Cooper, shadow Home Secretary, met with a group of us advocates and victims to hear evidence on the scandal, much as she did when she chaired the Home Affairs Committee and effected change. Present too was Sadiq Khan, mayor of London and Debbie Weeks Bernard, deputy mayor, both of whom have shown commitment to the Windrush generation & to aiding in resolving the scandal. They all listened intently & in Labour's manifesto are plans for a Race Equality Act & a Windrush commissioner. We don't expect overnight changes but we expect change; many of those affected by the Windrush scandal are elderly. Many have died before obtaining justice.

We've been calling for a statutory inquiry since 2019, & I'm hopeful that this will now be on the agenda, & that its terms of reference will examine the historical slight of hand which denied British Subjects their status. We hope too that it will get to the root of the problems undermining the resolution of the scandal.

For now, today is Windrush Day. Against the odds, some of our elders are still here, & still contributing to this important, even if selective, element of the history of the Black presence in the UK, across all spheres of life. It is right, who ever vex about the name or meaning of the day, that we celebrate this much maligned group, which includes my parents. It is right too that we continue to seek to explore the experiences of this group, & that resolution of the scandal, includes restorative justice for the community.

Happy Windrush Day.

The Windrush Scandal in a Transnational and Commonwealth Context 10/05/2024

Dear All,

Please register to join Dr. Juanita Cox *and* Richard Black for this event at *Leigh Day* in London on Tuesday, 21st May (5pm-6.30pm).

https://windrushscandal.org/

The Windrush Scandal in a *Transnational and Commonwealth* Context: Project and Research Outputs | London | Institute of Historical Research (history.ac.uk)

Richard was a *respondent* on the Windrush Scandal project and recently returned to the UK after being locked out for over 40 years.

In 1960, as a young child and British subject, he *moved* from St Lucia to settle in the UK.

Many years later - in the 1980s - *he travelled to Trinidad* on an UK-issued British passport.

When he *attempted to apply for a new passport* from the British Embassy in Trinidad, the old one having expired, he was told, ‘You're not British’.

And so began a *devastating series of events* which has received widespread news coverage.

(e.g., https://www.channel4.com/news/windrush-scandal-returning-to-the-uk-after-a-forty-year-wait)

The Windrush Scandal project has *conducted 60 interviews* with a wide variety of people: survivors of the scandal as well as their advocates (e.g., church leaders, activists, lawyers, MPs, Caribbean diplomats, journalists) and immigration officials.

We hope this material will function as a permanent record of the ‘Windrush’ scandal and be used as an *educational resource* by academics, students producing undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, secondary school teachers, supplementary schools, and interested organisations/individuals outside of the academy.

The oral history interviews will be deposited at the Black Cultural Archives as well as the Senate House Library *by the end of June* and are being made available where possible via the following website: The Windrush Scandal in a Transnational and Commonwealth Context - The Windrush Scandal.

Attend this talk to *learn more* about the project and its findings.

All the best,

Juanita

Research Fellow: The Windrush Scandal in a Transnational and Commonwealth Context - The Windrush Scandal

The Windrush Scandal in a Transnational and Commonwealth Context This three-year research project seeks, for the first time, to produce a scholarly examination of the so-called Windrush Scandal within a fully transnational framework, one that properly considers the agency of a wide variety of official and non-official actors from both sides of the Atlantic and th...

The Windrush Act is an act of reparation...
.. for past wrongs. The reparation that it seeks is to work with those who are today living with the consequences of those past wrongs. It is reparation that goes beyond mere financial compensation to individuals, but instead provides resources to affected people and communities to support them in what they want to do with their lives. To this end, the Windrush Act will establish a Commonwealth community cohesion fund for the development of projects in the UK and the Commonwealth to tackle disparities and rebuild social and economic ties of communities damaged by the Windrush scandal and other historic unfair actions negatively impacting on this cohort.

The Windrush Act is an act of restitution
Since 1948 the citizenship of those who arrived on the Windrush, and that of their descendants, has been repeatedly eroded, particularly by the 1971 Immigration Act and by the current “hostile environment”. This erosion leaves this Afro-Caribbean cohort finding themselves British in all but name, and therefore having to prove their Britishness when it was Britain that eroded and undermined their Britishness in the first place. The Windrush Act fully restores the Britishness of this cohort.

The Windrush Act is an act of remembering
To this day the UK prefers to tell a story about its colonial past that is often unrecognizable to those who lived that past. Only by telling a more honest story about its colonial past can the country show that its citizens of colonial descent are as worthy citizens as any other. The Windrush Act holds the state and its education system to this more honest telling.

The Windrush Act remembers what Great Britain meant to those pioneering men and women who saw in the country a set of ideals and values that led them to board the SS Windrush in 1948.

BORN IN THE UK UNDER THREAT OF DEPORTATION

https://www.lep.co.uk/news/people/march-to-highlight-preston-windrush-campaign-1-9900367

Preston Windrush Generation & Descendants UK came about because there was nowhere for Sekeena Kydd, age 34 living in Preston, after her daughter’s passport application was declined for her school trip to Spain in July 2019. Her dilemma now was not what is this Windrush Scandal, but questioning who is she, where does she come from? Even though and knowing she is British. Sekeena was advised to contact the Windrush Taskforce set up by the current government.

Her whole family has come out to support her and Glenda Andrew is asking that Preston and the UK support and help her in doing so.

Sekeena was told that they look from her mothers’ lineage not her fathers who also is British and therefore her daughter’s passport is declined.
Since 23rd of March 2019 Glenda and Sekeena have helped and raised awareness of the Windrush Campaign and Justice 4 Windrush and Law reform.

This group is a voice for all the descendants and their children and their children’s children, the next generation of Windrush and migrants that have lived here and made GB their home. Young to senior. Sekeena asked Glenda Andrew the question and she said yes, I’ll help her as I had applied recently for my mum citizenship and got that.

Like Sekeena Kydd Muncey and her family, please click like, sign up (become a member) and share!

If you need or require any help, or filling in forms, an advocate, someone to speak on your behalf, make the call, or talk, need or give advice and support, we are here for you too!

We like to welcome you, thank you for liking and joining Preston Windrush Generation & Descendants UK because as we all come together regardless of colour, race etc we learn, grow making a difference together!
