The Early Days of Iyengar Yoga in Edinburgh 23/07/2024

The Early Days of Iyengar Yoga in Edinburgh Edinburgh was one of those places in the UK blessed by the dropping of the amrta of Guruji's teachings from the very early days. Our auspicious year was 1974. In October of that year, Scotland's first introduction to Iyengar Yoga came when the Edinburgh University Yoga Society (EUYS) was started up.

🌻August presents-Clare Trodden
Claire started practising yoga more than 20 years ago, when young, fit and flexible and the poses came very easily. Things have changed quite a bit with the years but yoga means more to her now than ever. Yoga has helped her make the best of life’s challenges and allowed her to do things she never thought possible, such as studying at the Iyengar institute in India. Clare really enjoys teaching students of all ages, shapes and sizes. That’s one of the joys of Iyengar yoga – it is accessible to all and can benefit everyone!

She worked very closely with Geeta on the Senior Citizens syllabus, which is of interest to many teachers and students at the moment. We are delighted that Sushama will share her many years of knowledge at The Yoga Extension.

Sushama will teach two sessions at The Yoga Extension. Thursday evening (8th August) is a general workshop with a focus on restorative and pranayama. Sunday morning (11th August) will be another general workshop suitable for all abilities.

International Yoga Day 2024: Remembering BKS Iyengar Who Sparked Global Yoga Craze 23/06/2024

International Yoga Day 2024: Remembering BKS Iyengar Who Sparked Global Yoga Craze Often called the ''father of modern yoga'', Mr Iyengar was credited with spreading the practice of yoga to about 60 countries.

22/06/2024

Iyengar Yoga, named after its founder B.K.S. Iyengar, is a style of yoga that emphasizes precision, alignment, and the use of props to help practitioners achieve proper form and posture. There are several benefits associated with practicing Iyengar Yoga:

Focus on Alignment: Iyengar Yoga places a strong emphasis on correct alignment in each pose. This attention to detail helps to improve body awareness and reduces the risk of injury. Practitioners learn to align their bodies properly, fostering a better understanding of their physical capabilities.

Use of Props: The use of props such as blocks, straps, and blankets is a distinctive feature of Iyengar Yoga. Props assist in achieving correct alignment and make the poses accessible to individuals with varying levels of flexibility and strength. This makes the practice inclusive and adaptable to different body types and abilities.

Increased Strength and Flexibility: Regular practice of Iyengar Yoga can lead to increased strength and flexibility. The focus on proper alignment allows for a gradual progression in the intensity of poses, helping individuals develop strength in a balanced way while enhancing overall flexibility.

Improved Posture: The emphasis on alignment and awareness in Iyengar Yoga translates into improved posture. As practitioners learn to align their bodies correctly during poses, they carry this awareness into their daily activities, promoting better posture and spinal health.

Enhanced Balance and Coordination: Iyengar Yoga often includes poses that challenge balance and coordination. The practice of holding poses and maintaining stability helps improve overall balance and coordination, contributing to better physical control and body awareness.

Stress Reduction: Like many forms of yoga, Iyengar Yoga incorporates breath awareness and mindfulness. The practice of focused breathing and presence in each pose can help reduce stress and promote mental relaxation.

Therapeutic Applications: Iyengar Yoga is often used therapeutically to address specific physical conditions or injuries. The precise alignment and use of props allow for modifications to suit individual needs, making it a valuable practice for those recovering from injuries or managing certain health conditions.

Increased Body Awareness: Practicing Iyengar Yoga requires a high level of attention to detail and mindfulness. This heightened awareness extends beyond the yoga mat, fostering a deeper connection between the mind and body in everyday life.

It's important to note that the benefits of Iyengar Yoga can vary from person to person, and individual experiences may differ. Additionally, it's advisable to consult with a qualified yoga instructor, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions or concerns.
