Nigel Mills
MP for Amber Valley - Promoted by Nigel Mills of Unicorn House, Wellington Street, Ripley, DE5 3EH
Today I asked the Defence Secretary Grant Shapps about what the Ministry of Defence is doing to help protect shipping routes through the Red Sea. Glad to hear that the Royal Navy is playing a key role in response to the Houthi-led attacks.
Pleased that restrictions to student visa routes came into effect this week - around 140,000 fewer people will come into the UK.
Int'l students starting courses this month can no longer bring family members unless they're on a postgrad research course or funded by a Govt scholarship.
Happy New Year everyone!
Merry everyone! The constituency office will be open again on 28th December.
I asked what steps Mel Stride is taking to reduce fraud/error in the welfare system.
I'm pleased that £900m is being invested to tackle fraud/error. It is also reassuring that the power to investigate bank accounts will only be used when there's a clear signal of fraud/error.
I’m blocking the reasons used to prevent flights to Rwanda from taking off.
This emergency law is the only way to make Rwanda work and control our borders.
The Environment Agency has told me that 10-25mm of rain across Derbyshire on Thursday with max totals of 20-40 mm rain over higher ground. 10mm of rain will be expected on Friday.
I urge everyone to remain vigilant and check out the live flood warning map at:
Check for flooding in England - GOV.UK View current flood warnings and alerts for England and the national flood forecast for the next 5 days. Also check river, sea, groundwater and rainfall levels.
Happy to hear that James Cleverly has signed a joint treaty with Rwanda's Foreign Minister Dr Vincent Biruta which addresses the concerns of the United Kingdom Supreme Court and will allow the Govt to proceed with the plan to send asylum seekers to .
The treaty ensures that people relocated to Rwanda are not at risk of being returned to a country where their life or freedom would be threatened.
It is clear that - both legal and illegal - is far too high and needs to be drastically reduced.
I thus welcome the measures announced yesterday by James Cleverly, which will reduce net migration by 300,000 per year.
Pleased to hear that Jeremy Hunt has announced the following in his :
Headline rates of National Insurance cut by 2%
Minimum Wage will rise to £11.44/hr and will apply to over 21s
75% discount on business rates for firms in retail, hospitality and leisure
Benefits will be uprated in line with inflation
Triple lock will be kept – state pension will rise by 8.5%
Great to speak to Later Life Ambitions today at the launch of their Pensioners’ Manifesto, which lays out a vision for 11 million older people in the UK.
I support their call for a commitment to guarantee the State Pension triple lock for at least the duration of the next Parliament, investment in local transport services for uprated concessions, and improved accessibility for older people on all new transport facilities.

Happy to see that is now at 4.6%, from a peak of 11% last year. Our priority should now be to get it down to the 2% target as fast as possible.
See my question yesterday to the then-Minister of State for Employment Guy Opperman about how to determine the appropriate benefit rates below:
On , I wish to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Let’s remember and honour their courage, resilience, and the freedom they’ve secured for us.
