WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT POOR TAXI SERVICES?
The subject of poor service form local taxis is often raised on social media with issues ranging from overcharging to a recent scenario where a resident reported she was concerned for her safety.
I have also had reason to complain myself. Back in 2021 the price if my fair increased by ยฃ3.50 because I couldnโt pay by cash. It has been illegal to surcharge for credit/debit payments since 2018 (1).
I have actively avoided that company ever since but it seems the poor practices continue and I donโt believe we should just accept that companies in our town operate like this.
Not everyone will know who to avoid or have alternative phone numbers to hand, after all taxis are often used as a last resort in urgent situations or by vulnerable residents or those not familiar with our town.
I have approached Central Bedfordshire Council Public Protection team for advice on what we can do to address this this as a community.
Unlike premises licenses, e.g. for music or alcohol, there is no mechanism for reviewing taxi licenses. However, if they receive enough complaints the Council can contact the company in the first instance and have the powers to revoke a taxi license if it is deemed necessary.

After having a few days off with a horrible flu virus....I'm back to work today....and hayfever is driving me mad! On the plus side, I get to walk in some beautiful spots (apart from the grass and nettle pollen ๐คง)
Monday's walkies....my gorgeous Luna (grand-doggy) has Nanny all week....and little Loui is back!! Its a 'stick your tongue out' kinda day ๐๐
