Today is the 5οΈβ£0οΈβ£th anniversary of the first of two SDS Swimming Championships. ππββοΈ
SDS invited Richard Brickley OBE MBE to write the foreword for today's programme as someone who has been instrumental in the development of - not only this event - but all sport for people with a disability in Scotland and beyond. Thankfully Richard accepted our invitation and his foreword is replicated below.
50 years ago, the first SDS Championships were held in one day at the Fife Sports Institute in Glenrothes and supported by Fife Council. The morning session involved the leading Scottish swimmers with physical impairments and the afternoon session swimmers with learning disabilities. Falkirk Council, Glasgow City Council and Scottish Swimming became key partners and the junior championships moved over from the Scottish Schools Swimming Association to SDS.
The classification system of time banding introduced by SDS was integral to the success of the championships events. The system was based on swimmer ability/times as opposed to level of impairment and reliance on medical classification. Coaches/teachers were able to assess, and participation levels grew dramatically. SDS used the system for inter Branch swimming meets and national competitions against English regions. I was privileged to present a paper at the Council of Europe when we added track and field to the Scottish approach to classification.
My memories of the 70s and beyond are fresh. I firstly recall being impressed by the strength of the Tayside squad captained by Bill Fenwick and Ernie Guild plus the Lothian squad led by Wilma Lawrie and Brenda Moir. In the 80s Fife emerged as a force in para swimming with Andrew Brennan, Paul Noble MBE, Iain Matthew, Andrew Lindsay, and Lara Ferguson excelling on the world stage. The creation of the Strathclyde Federation of Swim Clubs resulted in a steady flow of talented swimmers for the SDS championships, Scottish teams, and Team GB. Prolific Paralympic medallists Maggi McEleny and Kenny Cairns from Port Glasgow Otters were inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame and were regulars at the SDS swimming championships as part of Team West of Scotland.
Coaches more than played their part in the success of the SDS championships and the preparation of Branch teams. Eddie McCluskey MBE from the PG Otters in the west stands out along with Don McFarlane and his role in the career of multi-Paralympic medallist Jim Anderson OBE. Eddie Campbell at Glenrothes ASC was a great influence on the Fife and Scottish performance para swim squads. Richard Osborne in Aberdeen created a talented squad where Tommy Hunter blossomed as a Paralympian. Jen Quinton in Tayside led a squad where Alan McGregor emerged as an opponent but GB teammate of Jim Anderson. Sensory impaired swimmers Mary Ann Low, Angie Robertson, James and Stephen Clegg, Jack McComish, Lucy Walkup, and Danni Joyce competed successfully on the world stage but found time to support the SDS championships. They were all great champions with inclusive mainstream coaches just like Abby Kane, Toni Shaw and Oliver Carter amongst so many others in 2023.
Swimmers of all levels of ability compete at the SDS National Swimming Championships and events are structured to ensure that competition is fair and equitable. Swimmers compete for titles and points towards the overall team/branch trophy. The championships offer an opportunity for Team GB swimmers to compete alongside novice participants and every swim is important. 50 years on the side-line enthusiasm will be as vibrant as it was 50 years ago in Fife.
Richard Brickley OBE MBE former chairman of Scottish Disability Sport
Good luck to everyone competing today on what is sure to be a very special occasion.

It takes an army to support our swimmers getting to this point, thank you to all of our coaches and committee members, this can't happen without you and to also to all officials across the District, who have given up their time at galas, ensuring accredited meets, meaning our swimmers times count!
Good luck to Kaleb and Linden, dig deep, swim fast and enjoy πββοΈ
