DINA ÖGON AT ISLINGTON ASSEMBLY HALL

Wednesday 4th September 2024

Airy Nordic pop merges with soul, bossa nova, and psychedelia through this four-piece Swedish group.

Warm and harmonic, their retro-pop evokes memories of the Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, and old Motown hits transplanted into bright Swedish summer nights.

Despite the Scandinavian sound, the band also draws solid inspiration from music worldwide, with threads to Brazil, Turkey, Nigeria, and many other places, gaining recognition far beyond Sweden’s borders. Tyler, The Creator himself declared their song “Tombola 94” to be his favourite song in 2022.
Adding their latest output ‘Orion’ to their string of critically acclaimed albums, these Swedish pop heavyweights take their jazz, RnB, and hip-hop-inflected musings to Islington Assembly Hall this September.

Beyond her role in the Danish Defence, Queen Margrethe II also shares a special connection with our own military. As a symbol of their friendship, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Her Majesty as Allied Colonel-in-Chief of The Queen's Regiment in 1972. Her Majesty was also appointed the same title in The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment in 1997. This is a testament to the enduring unity between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United Kingdom’s royal houses and their Armed Forces.

Queen Margrethe's distinction extends globally, having been adorned with many foreign decorations and honorary titles. On British shores, Her Majesty became an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Arts in 1975 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford in 1992. A monarch celebrated not only in Denmark but also on the world stage.

Professor David Goldsmith presented a gripping and entertaining talk on the "most famous Swede nobody ever talks about" to a packed audience in Mayfair. David spoke about the infamous "Match King" Ivar Kreuger, his life, work and dramatic downfall. With the use of slides and even original shares certificates from the period, David took us through Kreuger's life and how he ended up in the same rogue's gallery as the infamous fraudsters Ponzi and Madhoff. The society would like to thank Professor Goldsmith for generously giving up his time to talk to our members.

On 28 September the Anglo-Finnish Society will be hosting 'An Exploration of Nordic Noir' - A Talk by Pauliina Ståhlberg at 3.30 p.m. in the Community Hall, St Anne’s Church, 55 Dean Street, Soho, London W1D 6AF.
“Nordic Noir” is a crime fiction genre that applies to a type of literature and film or TV drama characterised by plain language, unassuming lead personalities and bleak settings. However, this superficially uninspiring mix has, arguably, led to one of the Nordic region’s greatest cultural exports, appealing to audiences around the world and inspiring copyists in many other countries.
This event is organised and hosted jointly with the Anglo-Danish Society.

This is the Swedish foundation dedicated to Ingmar Bergman and his work. It is open to writers, artists, scholars and journalists from around the world. Dr. Jennie Nell, lecturer at Stockholm University and vice-chairman of the Swedish Bellman Society, gave an online talk about Sweden's most famous songwriter, composer, musician, poet and entertainer. Carl Michael Bellman (1740-1795) is often referred to as Sweden's national poet. His debut work was Evangeliska Dödstankar (Evangelical Death Thoughts) which was written in 1757 and was followed by a wealth of mainly but not exclusively satirical poems. Bellman quickly became highly popular. He was musically gifted, but when he performed his songs, he also assumed roles as one would in a theatrical performance. Sadly, Bellman suffered from financial troubles throughout his life became a severe alcoholic, and many then saw him then (and forever) as merely an alcoholic 'pub poet'. This was despite the fact that he had a close relationship with the then Swedish king Gustav III. His reputation is very high in the Nordic countries and Germany, but much less so in Anglo-American circles. We were pleased to be joined by the world-famous musician Martin Best.

Åbo Swedish Theatre 18/06/2022

The talk and virtual tour of Åbo Svenska Theater by Maria Olintalk, the theatre’s head of Communications, is now available to watch on the Anglo-Swedish Society's YouTube channel.

This outstandingly beautiful theatre is the oldest in Finland, among the oldest theatres in Northern Europe and is still primarily in its original form. The first theatre in Finland was built in Åbo in 1817 and was destroyed in Åbo’s Great Fire of 1827. The current building opened on 21 January 1839, with its earliest productions being mainly touring groups of Swedish Actors.

Åbo (or Turku in Finnish) plays an integral part in the history of Swedish-speaking Finland. The City is officially bilingual and is the former capital of Finland. It has a magnificent castle (Turun Linna), a Medieval Cathedral founded in 1300, the seat of the Archbishop of Finland, the Åbo Akademi University, which is the only exclusively Swedish-speaking university outside Sweden and, of course, the magnificent Åbo Swedish Theatre.
