The dog was being walked on a pavement next to a road....
On a retractable lead
The dog suddenly leapt into the road
Luckily due to my lightning reflexes β‘ I swerved my car just in time
Thankfully there was no other vehicles coming towards me in the opposite direction. Thankfully as I was able to swerve rather than suddenly brake I avoided the possibility of the car behind colliding with mine
There could have been 1 dead dog, a devastated owner, a traumatized me (and other driver) and two damaged cars. All because someone chose to use a retractable lead next to a road
I'm shaken
The owner got angry with his dog and gave it a big tug with the lead and shouted. I understand the frustration, especially when a dog that usually keeps to the pavement suddenly does the unexpected, but the dog didn't deserve a telling off because the dog was just being a dog
This could have been avoided by clipping the dog onto a short lead
Now I'm not against retractable leads unlike most dog professionals. I do actually think they a few specific and appropriate uses. But we must put safety first and consider others around us
A retractable lead is not the right lead choice while walking along the pavement. If you use the extension of the lead in an open area then you need to carry the retractable lead with you, and attach your dog onto a short lead while you walk to that destination.
PLEASE if you use a retractable lead, you need to do a quick risk assessment. Is the environment an appropriate place to use this lead? What could go wrong? If you are near a road then the answer is no and you could be risking your dog's life
There are people that will be reading this that will think it won't happen to them and that I am being dramatic. Surely nobody thinks it'll happen to their dog? Nobody attaches their dog to a retractable lead, walks near a road and expects their dog to jump into oncoming traffic
I actually know two dogs that lost their lives by being hit by cars due to inappropriate use of a retractable lead. Those people didn't think it would happen to them either.
The truth is this can happen to any dog. Dogs are unpredictable, even he most 'obedient' and well trained dog. The dog I nearly hit today was simply SNIFFING something interesting in the road
No dog is a robot
Dogs get startled
Dogs instincts take over
Don't risk it. Not only is it not fair on your dog to put them at risk like this, it is not fair for road users

"Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have updated their guidelines on when to neuter 40 popular dog varieties by breed and s*x. Their recent paper in Frontiers in Veterinary Science adds five breeds to a line of research that began in 2013 with a study that suggested that early neutering of golden retrievers puts them at increased risk of joint diseases and certain cancers."
And there are 2 breeds (one s*x) they recommend not sterilizing. Fascinating!

My friend Keith to the rescue again....absolutely π― do your research... so so many unfortunately don't, and it's the dogs that nearly always suffer the consequences.

I am so proud of these clients I went to see the week before last.
There, young Malinois hadn't had a great start. She had broken her leg and had to spend two months of her short life in a crate. When I saw them, she didn't have any interest in them at all, she was so focused on her environment that they may as well not have been there.
A week later..... look at her now! π
I can only give you the advice and strategies to train your dog π YOU have to train your dog. Put in the work and receive the rewards....well done to you....β€οΈ

Due to unforeseen circumstances Me and my partner acquired a very boystrous, pig-headed, over protective, needy 2 year old German shepherd (Bruce) with no social skills.
At our wits end, we reached out to Susan who kindly agreed to meet with us. During a 2 hour 1-2-1 session Susan shared with us some simple, yet effective ways of correcting the poor behaviours and traits that Bruce had.
The 2 hours was the best money we have ever spent. We wish we had reached out sooner.
We have gone from a highly reactive dog, sometimes aggressive, that would drag, jump, and kick to get at other people and dogs on walks, to a dog that now ignores 99% of people and 90% of dogs. Whilst we still have a long way to go in the training journey the difference is huge to the point other dog walkers are now commenting on the improvement in Bruce's behaviour.
Susan does a fantastic job of breaking the training down into very easy, simple to follow steps that can be easily incorporated into daily life. We can't recommend Susan highly enough, she is very knowledgeable in her area of expertise. Susan is also very supportive after the training, frequently checking in and offering tips and encouragement.

CITIZEN K9 DOG TRAINING where sit means sit!
Cheryl & I (Susan) decided to start a dog training class in Wakefield as we were constantly being asked for help & advice from people having various issues with their dogs. Cheryl has had dogs all her life and she now owns German Shepherds, four to be exact, and is a Kennel Club Assured Breeder. She has trained at various other clubs as an instructor as well as training her own dogs to a very high standard. All of them having their Gold Good Citizens, Qualifying for Crufts Regional finals and much more. With the exception of Coda her youngest GSD at the age of one year. Coda has already achieved her Bronze Good Citizens & is working towards her Silver. Cheryl has only owned Coda 6 Months. Cheryl is a registered micro chipper and holds a Canine First Aid Certificate
I (Susan) also own German Shepherds but just two of them. Many years ago I used to train my Rough Collie/ GSD she achieved her Gold Good Citizens. I then did a lot of training with my Border Collie whom I rescued her from the Border Collie Rescue as the age of 10 months. I am a Classical Dressage Instructor of which I have done for over 35 years. After loosing my horse a few years ago I decided to go back to dogs & dog training. My older GSD has achieved her Gold Good Citizens & has be placed at shows in obedience, she also qualified for the Crufts Regional Finals a couple of years ago. My younger GSD is now eighteen months old and both Cheryl & I train them in I.P.O. I have been and instructor for BAGSDS Club in Huddersfield (British Association of German Shepherd Dogs) I hold a Level 3 Dog Behaviour Diploma, an Intermediate Certificate Obedience Instructors Certificate & a Canine First Aid Certificate.
