First review of new album:
Geof Whitely Project – Curse of the Darkness
Don’t let the ‘dark’ title put you off this, the latest offering from Geof Whitely Project, from the gentle keyboard and orchestral opening to The Reckoning to the harder edged Shifting Signs in Sand, this album delivers yet another engaging music journey.
The use of gentle keyboards pulls the listener into Illusion, but the lyrics demand attention in this particular song. Turn it up lie back and drink it in.
Embryo moves through moves light and dark within the music, while the vocals add depth and emotion to some thought provoking lyrics, the heartbeat towards the end adding a somewhat ‘ghostly’ feel, while birds sing happily, another gem.
Supernatural Casualty continues in the same vein, Black Cats, Magpies and Déjà vu all adding the mystery of the tune, while the feel of the music is upbeat.
The title track has a darker introduction with deep rolling African sounding drums and a hint of a distant haunting flute. The track builds the anticipation, this is a Geof Whitely Project track so you know it is going to blossom and grow. Here, you’re held back, tension mounting while the delightful musical motifs dance and tease. Then a harp breaks the sound an Far Eastern ‘magic carpet’ type feeling causes a pause. The drums kick in and we off on a ride, guitars continue to paint the picture as we go. There is something slightly sinister in the repeating motifs, but the music glides along. Lyrics only taking the reins with just two minutes of the track to go, but somehow, this is the cherry on the icing on the cake.
As previously hinted, Shifting Signs in Sand has a slightly harder edge and is, dare I say it, a more ‘traditional’ Geof Whitely Project, no less engaging and melodic and it fits into the overall soundscape of the album perfectly.
The lyrics within Fate, need attention right from the beginning, I’m saying no more, but, this track would make an intriguing single!
A sinister, brooding start to Under Burning Skies gives way to the signature Geof Whitely Project guitars. Another catchy, disarming tune with layers that need exploring and appreciating.
Closer, Slight of Hand is a tale of mystery with a hint of heartbreak. Subtle time changes and musical mood changes help to weave a mystical picture around the lyrics. There is a nice ‘musical punch’ towards the end, which lifts the tune into another musical realm.
In summary, once again Geof Whitely Project have produced an engaging album with plenty of ear worms, hooks, melody and lyrics and paint a picture without ever dominating and taking over from the music. The sound continues, at least to these ears, to evolve, it would be intriguing to hear some of these tracks performed live, especially the classic title track. In short, simply marvellous!!!

Geof Whitely Project – "Slaves To The Magic"
Slaves To The Magic is the new release from Geof Whitely Project and, if you know the band, you’ll not be disappointed, if you don’t know the band, then you’re in for a treat!
From the dramatic dripping water introduction of Hydra through to the ten minutes plus of Fall From Grace, this album moves through some contrasting moods musically, but the lyrics are what you probably should pay a little more attention to, in a positive way.
Thought provoking and engaging each song has something different to offer, but, dear listener, you must decide what that means to your listening pleasure.
The more familiar musical menu of Geof Whitley Project is here in abundance, strong melody, steady but not always predictable rhythms, simply marvellous keyboards used to great effect producing contrast, light and dark and some well structured guitar moments, the end section of Recompense shows this off to great effect. The introduction to Diamond Eyes is another great example of this, giving a hint of early Boston maybe, but again, pay heed to the lyrics.
The tunes here do seem to have an added depth, both musically and lyrically and, to me at least, mark another step forward in the evolution of this simply marvellous act. Use of some electronic effects adds to the drama and complexity, without dominating or changing the Geof Whitely Project signature sound.
Did I mention Fall From Grace? Well, it is a ten minute plus track, with some interesting twists and turns, with some unusual ideas which just work, back to the dripping water and more. Sorry, but I’m not going to give everything away, the musical style is different, but still Geof Whitely Project, the lyrics draw you in and the back ground effects help paint a somewhat darker picture than we’re probably used to, but again, it just works. The “choir” on the opening of Shapeshifter is a slight departure, but again, works splendidly.
In short, Slaves To The Magic, is melodic, thoughtful and thought provoking, sitting on the ‘gentler’ side of rock, but don’t think for one second that this makes this album any less powerful in so many ways. It is a simply marvellous album.
