Women’s Euro 2025 Playoff Semi-Final 2nd Leg: Scotland v Hungary, match report by FTAM asst editor John Bleasdale.
Scotland are 180 minutes away from qualification to the Euro 2025 Finals after defeating Hungary in the Playoff Semi Final second leg at Easter Road.
Bringing home a one-nil lead from the first leg in Budapest, the hosts looked to kill off the tie from the off and dominated the early exchanges and created their first opportunity nine minutes in. Sam Kerr fed Lisa Evans on the right wing and her cross was met on half volley by Caroline Weir, but Lilla Turanyi blocked her goal-bound effort. From the resultant corner, a clever set-piece routine saw Erin Cuthbert roll the ball just outside six-yard box to the unmarked Weir, but she miscued her shot harmlessly wide.
Two minutes later, the skipper had another half-chance. Claire Emslie intercepted a slack pass midway in the Hungarian half and feeds Weir in left hand channel, but tame effort straight at Lauren Brzycky.
Scotland finally broke the deadlock on 17 minutes. Sophie Howard sent a lovely ball over the top of the Hungarian backline that released Evans down the right once more and she cut he ball back into the path of Sam Kerr. The Bayern Munich midfielder’s shot hit the underside of the bar but ricocheted into the net off the heels of the unfortunate Brzykcy.
Buoyed by that goal, Scotland sought to put the game beyond doubt and created another great opportunity in the 25th minute. A patient build-up resulted in an Emslie cross found an unmarked Evans at the back post, but her tame header went straight at Brzykcy.
Just five minutes later, the second goal did arrive, and in some style. Erin Cuthbert pounced on a weak clearance around twenty yards from goal, and her left foot shot sailed over Brzycky into the top corner of the net to the delight of the home crowd.
It could’ve been three with ten minutes to go until half time when a short corner by Weir to Emslie saw the winger cross the ball to the six-yard line, where it was met by the head of Sophie Howard. Unfortunately, the defender couldn’t add to her four-goal tally at international level and the ball went narrowly over the bar.
Scotland continued their dominance in the second period and killed the match off as a contest on 55 minutes. Evans cut in from the right wing and her pass was beautifully flicked on by Martha Thomas into the path of Caroline Weir. Having passed up earlier chances, this time the skipper made no mistake by sliding the ball into the bottom let-hand corner of the net to make it three.
The fourth goal came just ten minutes later when substitute Kirsty Hanson’s shot at the edge of the area deflected perfectly into the path of Martha Thomas. The Tottenham striker took a touch before sliding the ball past Brzycky. Scotland’s confidence was up, but at one point they got too cocky and almost gifted the visitors a consolation a couple of minutes later when some over-casual play at the back saw the ball fall to Sara Pusztai. Luckily for the hosts, Papai skewed her shot wide of the post from just inside the penalty area.
Having got over that scare, Scotland almost got a fifth after Hanson burst clear down the left wing and sent the ball low into Thomas’s path, but a great tackle by Szabo thwarted her on this occasion. The remainder of the game turned into a training exercise as Scotland rang the changes and confidently stroked the ball across the Easter Road pitch to wind the clock down to the end of the ninety minutes and complete a fine evening’s work for the Women’s National Team.
The Scots will face Finland in the final. The Finns comfortably saw off Montenegro 6-0 on aggregate in their Semi Final, and Scotland will be hoping for better luck this time around after two 1-0 defeats to the Scandinavians saw them miss out on the delayed 2021 Euros.

What they said!
Martha Thomas: “The last two campaigns were so disappointing, the last Euros and the World Cup even more so not to get over the line. We’ve got such a talented team that we deserve to be at a major tournament, I think a lot of us feel that and we’ve got a lot of us from those two tournaments and we’ve got a lot of fuel in us that we want to take into the Euros.”
Pedro Martinez Losa: “It’s one step down, we spoke a few of days ago about how there were four steps to the Euros, now there’s two. Finland’s a competitive team that we have played before, and now we have to be prepared.”
SWNT cruised into a Euro 2025 final play-off against Finland with a convincing, four-goal win over Hungary.
