Monday Motivation: Tips to Stay Motivated on a Rainy Day โ๐
Mondays are tough enough without the rain clouds and the sleep-inspiring sounds of the raindrops on the roof and the windows! So I thought I would share some tips to stay motivated on a rainy day!
๐กBring on the Light!
Who else's internal clock thinks you are nearing bedtime when it is cloudy outside?
๐งChange the atmosphere with headphones
Rain is relaxing and wonderful... at bedtime. Bring out the headphones, plug in an upbeat & energising music playlist.
๐ถ๐ปโโ๏ธExercise Anyway
Just a little bit of movement does play a huge role in lifting a rainy day mood!
๐Skip the Comfort Foods..
It is a better idea to energise your body with healthy foods instead! I know that I will be more focused tomorrow if I eat right today!
๐Re-Prioritise the To-Do List.
To stay productive on a rainy day, you may need to rewrite your task list to include indoor tasks or lower energy items.
No matter the day, the weather or the temperature, it is important to keep moving, to keep motivated, and to stay positive!

Hello! ๐๐ป
I on purpose โaccidentallyโ have taken an extended break from social media particularly TikTok, and logging back in after three weeks realised I hadnโt missed much. I have a phone full videos and photos as I had the intention of posting my daily vlog but being summer lost my routine. I have been in aunty mode (welcomed my new niece) and have started my summer break hanging out with family and marking exams.
Iโm back! With a schedule for YouTube and TikTok and instructions to my team to annoy me into sticking with it. We have produced so many resources and it feels a shame not to share them. While the break has been good, Iโve realised consistent posting allows me to stay focused and not disappear into โZahra worldโ. Iโve also have had a good dose of vitamin D (had a birthday break by the sea) and am feeling refreshed.
I know I have missed calls, emails, messages; I will get back to everyone soon. (I know you will have read this exact sentence 100โs of times). Thank you for everyone who has asked if Iโm okay glad to know there are people that would notice if I disappeared. Here are some highlights of the last few weeks! ๐ฅฐ

This week we will be talking about Elizabeth Key! โจ
In 1656, the enslaved African-American woman Elizabeth Key won her freedom in the Supreme Court. She formed arguments surrounding her father being English and how that should make her free, and that she had been enslaved for 10 years longer than she should have been. As a result, Elizabeth and her son gained freedom, undoing the ties that allowed plantation owners to take African-Americans as slaves.

This Week in History: She didโฆ ๐ค
This series focuses on pivotal female moments in history and the past week. It is inspired by the book by Ailsa Holland, Tania Hershmann and Jo Bell who run the twitter account - I highly recommend you check them out! The aim is to showcase not only the incredible things females are acheiving now, but also their overlooked moments in history. This week we will be talking about Hazel Hill.
Hazel Hill, aged just 13, helped to calculate the number of guns Spitfires and Hurricanes would need to bring down enemy aircraft during WW2. This was vital information for the RAF, and allowed them for victory during the Battle of Britain in 1940. She also treated wounded soldiers during the war, and later became a child psychiatrist, studying phobias, anorexia and autism.

Birthday Week ๐๐๐
So it was my birthday on Monday, and as my nephew tells everyone he comes across, this week Iโm 41. I still am fighting growing up but the fact that the hot weather made me think I should wash my duvet and cushions so they could dry quickly clearly says otherwise. I was thinking about my biggest takeaway this year ( I had to look through my diary as my memory doesnโt extend beyond yesterday - thanks ADHD). I think the biggest thing Iโve realised is for me Nature, walking by water or in a forest, fixes pretty much everything. When I feel crazy and teeth grinding aaahhhh (not sure how to describe it but itโs being angry at everything and nothing), Iโve gone for a walk and literally all my aaahhh disappears. One of my favourite places is Tring reservoirs - there is water, green, calm and a farm cafe that serves the yummiest food a short walk away.
This weeks blog post is guest written by Lana. I taught her โa long timeโ ago and she has become like a little sister. Sheโs beyond awesome and when I speak to her she always makes me smile and feel very loved ๐ฅฐ

Steps to applying to College ๐
Applying for college can be something that feels like a daunting task for many, unsure of where to go and what subjects to take. This process begins way before you sit your GCSEs, and can be hard to tackle without help from teachers and parents. If you are currently in Year 10 and are waiting to apply, I will outline the steps many college applications take (although obviously this will vary between colleges), trying to help you get into the college thatโs best suited to you.
Step 1. - Visiting your local colleges and sixth forms
Step 2. - Applications & Interviews
Step 3. - Taster Days

Job hunting part 1: A guide to getting a job ๐ฎ๐ผ๐ง๐ปโ๐ณ๐จ๐ฝโ๐ซ
As the academic year comes to an end and the Summer approaches, many of the older students and readers will be thinking about getting a Summer job.
One of the biggest advantages of getting a job is simply the routine that it provides you with and it makes the transition from school to the holidays and back again slightly easier. You also develop new skills, gain experience for your CV and make some money on the side.
The easiest way is to check online for major companies, or simply go in person and ask the manager on shift if they are looking for any extra help - make sure to bring a printed copy of your CV! Going in person is often the most effective as emails or messages can be missed. Job hunting websites allow you to apply to many jobs quickly, and are used by many companies as they have in-built aptitude tests that you can do, for example, a job in accounting may ask you to do a quick numerical aptitude test as you apply.
Regardless of how you find a job, the one thing you will always need is a CV. A CV is a document that essentially highlights who you are, your skills, achievements, capabilities, experience and what you are looking for in a job. It is important as this will often be the first impression potential employers will have of you, so a good CV is vital.

Recently all my ADHD symptoms seem to have been in overdrive ๐ซ
Iโve struggled to stay emotionally regulated, have taken on too much, and have dropped the ball on a few things and missed deadlines. I assumed it was me being overwhelmed due to it being exam time for my students, when Iโm at my busiest, butย previouslyย it has been the environment I thrive in. Having now been to the doctors and had blood tests etc.. I now know its because I am premenopausal and the interaction between my hormones and ADHD had caused these issues. Getting treatment instantly helped. Iโve always associated menopause with being the beginning of the end and I think that affected me more than anything else. I have had to force myself to stop and realise that I am the happiest and most comfortable in myself than I have ever been and that I still have over half my life to continue to annoy my friends, family and students.ย If you have been on the receiving end of my forgetfulness and general grumpiness these last few weeks please take this as an apology, and book me in to buy you cake and coffee this coming summer.
ย
On a lighter note I am loving the sunshine and Iโm particularly proud of the content I put on YouTube this past month for the 2022 A Level exams (even if it was my alternative to doing work I had to do). The live, the night before the exam, was attended by over 1K students and it has since been viewed by 4000 people, and the messages I have received since have been lovely and appreciated. I will be making a concerted effort to produce more content consistently for GCSE/ A Level maths over summer as its seems to be the best medium to help students.

NEW BLOG POST: Change ๐บโจ
Change is a part of life - it is inevitable, but it is still one of the hardest things to deal with. Big changes happen all the time, especially at this time of the year as it marks the end of the academic year. How can we effectively cope with change?
There are two ways people tend to cope with change - escape coping and control coping.
Escape coping is essentially avoiding the change and delaying it at all costs, and doing things to escape from thinking about and processing the change. If done for the long term, this can become exhausting and tiring and generally bad for your mental health.
Control coping is the more positive and proactive method of coping - you face the challenge head on, think about your feelings and get support to help you move through the change. It is the more difficult option in the short term, but allows you to properly process and work through the change more effectively, therefore reducing the amount of adjustment time you need.
The best ways to manage change is to try and maintain your mental health through these times using the ways I have talked about on this blog a lot: getting enough sleep, eating balanced regular meals, staying hydrated and getting some exercise. ๐ค๐ฅ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ
Another great way to manage change is to create a routine - maybe getting a part-time summer job will help with the change from having no school to provide you with routine anymore.
Finally, make sure you access support when you need it, whether it is a trained professional or talking to a friend over some coffee. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness! ๐ช๐ผ

While doing my CBT, NLP and also recent additional training to start working with youth probation again, the one thing I was natural at and complemented on was my ability to mirror ๐ช
To make someone more comfortable you learn to subtly mirror their posture, gestures to feel relatable. I have since learned this is very typical of anyone who is neurodivergent, not because you are deliberately trying to deceive people but because you are trying to fit into neurotypical social norms. I realised I have spent so much of my life masking that I didnโt even notice until I started being aware and journaling that I was very different depending on who I was talking to.
At the start of this year I talked about wanting to be my authentic self. I feel this year in particular I have learnt more about how my brain works and processes things. I have dropped most of my masks and also reframed how I talk about myself.
However, I am so grateful and lucky that there are few people in my life who I have never had to โpretendโ around, for example, my sister Sumayya who I think I have maybe always been too much myself with but have never felt judged. My best friend Zahida, although she doesnโt always agree with my opinions, has always been there for me through my various phases without judgement. ๐ฅฐ

The night before your exam ๐
It is recommended that you carry out any revision during the daytime and do not study into the night. You need to know when it is time to stop, breathe, put your books aside and rest. โ๐ผ
It can be tempting to โcramโ the night before an exam and stay up all night studying but this simply does not work. All this does is prevent your much needed rest, cause your stress to sky rocket and leads you into panic mode.
Here is a basic guide to the day before your exam:
๐
Make sure you know when and where your exam is. Write it down if you need to.
๐Prepare everything for the exam; pens, pencils etc. You can even set out your clothes for the morning so you have one less thing to think about.
๐Calmly go over your notes during the day one last time. After a short review put your books aside, breathe and try to relax for the rest of the evening.
๐๐ฝโโ๏ธDo something you enjoy, something fun that will ease your mind such as a sport, game or watching a movie.
๐ฅEat something, even if you do not feel hungry. You need fuel to function and so does your brain.
๐คWind down before bed. Put your phone away and try to relax. You will be fine.
๐Lie down, get comfortable and breathe. You have done all you can now and the best thing for you is rest.
What helps you before your exams? Let me know in the comments ๐๐ผ

Change can be difficult to deal with, especially for many students in Y11 and Y13 who will be entering a new phase of your life as the school year is coming to an end. โจ
Change is coming soon, and is scary, but also an inevitable part of life. Here are some of the best ways I have found over the years to help cope with massive changes:
1. Prepare
You can never be truly prepared for what will happen, but anticipating a lot of your needs can help calm some of the panic.
2. Keep perspective
Remember, there are many people who are in the exact position you are in and many before you - in a way, everyone is in the same boat.
3. Donโt be afraid to reach out
Making new friends and reaching out to new people can be daunting but having friends in your school or workplace makes everything so much easier.
Change is terrifying and daunting, but can also be some of the best things! Think about starting a new chapter of your life as exciting rather than scary! ๐
