Many houses in Falkland are over 300 years old and 28 buildings are listed with the National Trust. The medieval design of the town is made up of a high street and narrow cross wynds now full of life with traditional shops, restaurants, pubs, hotels and lodges. The most remarkable of the historic buildings is Falkland Palace, only just down the road from Fountain House. Built by James IV and James V between 1450 and 1541, the Palace was a country residence of the Stuart monarchs of Scotland for over 200 years. The twin-towered gatehouse overlooks the High Street at the center of the village. Fountain House sits beside the Bruce Fountain, the church and town square. Falkland is also home to Britain's oldest tennis court built in 1539 and a nine-hole golf course. Falkland Estate offers many forest trails and cycle paths. A swing park for children and a lovely stream is only a few minutes’ walk from Fountain House.
