This week is dedicated to celebrating the tireless work of small charities across the country. Rubies was started 6 years ago by 2 women from South Bank - Liz & Krista - with a cheque for £150 kindly matched by another small organisation Boro Soup. It hasn't been an easy journey to reach the point where we now employ 9 staff and support over 300 girls every year. Just like most small charities we have to find every penny ourselves through grant applications & fundraising, and we rely on our brilliant volunteers and supporters to help us keep us going. Thank you to everyone who supports Rubies and the many other brilliant small charities locally...we are determined to reach more girls with the message that they are valued - if you feel you could help us in some way pls go to our website and get in touch!

A little reminder for all the Year 6 pupils taking SATS tests this week 💜

Every girl taking part in our Self-Esteem & Empowerment courses receives their own ruby as a reminder of their worth. That's over 350 rubies given away in this academic year alone!
Every ruby comes with a message:
"In the natural world rubies are formed under intense pressure & heat. They are precious and incredibly valuable, but each have little imperfections running through them. In the same way we want to remind you that you are a ruby & you don't have to be perfect to be amazing"
Years later girls tell us they still have their rubies and all our staff and volunteers receive one too...

A reminder for us all, but especially young people taking GCSE exams over the next few weeks

We were proud to attend the Volun-Tees Awards at Teesside University last night. Congratulations to Rachel & Abbie, 2 of our own amazing volunteers, for winning the Community Volunteer and Judges Awards and to our volunteers who received recognition for the hours they have given to support the voluntary sector in Teesside over the past 12 months

We're really pleased to welcome Jade Wadrop to our board of charity trustees. Jade has been involved with Rubies for many years in a few different ways and we're looking forward to working with her again!

Liz received a warm welcome at the Methodist Church/Community Hub in Hutton Rugby this morning and was pleased to have the opportunity to talk about our work.

Our schools team have started distributing the ever popular 'Self-Care Goodie Bags' this week. Every girl taking part in our Year 6 & 7 Self-Esteem courses receives a free bag full of items to help her take care of body & mind - that's 150 bags being given away this term alone!

It's been great to start new Self-Esteem courses in Whale Hill, Sunnyside, Grangetown, Pallister Park, Linthorpe & Lakes primary schools over the last week, with more planned this term. We couldn't do this without the dedication and commitment of our staff, but especially of our team of volunteers who give up their time to support the brilliant girls of Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland.
Thanks also to Tees Valley Community Foundation for a grant to support our rising staff costs this term

Special thanks to Glenis, Jan and Ann for all their hard work in organising the day, collecting raffle prizes and really getting behind the work we do to support and empower the girls of Middlesbrough. Thank you all so much 💜

It's been another busy, and at times challenging, term in Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland schools. Young people's mental health is really suffering at the moment and many are struggling to cope with the demands of school life, even in primary schools. This has a big impact on us too and we have increased our staffing levels significantly in order to connect with girls individually. In this context we're really proud to share some of the feedback from the 100 girls who have completed our Self-Esteem Courses so far in 2024.

Liz was pleased to be able to step in at the last minute to speak to the Teesside Federation of WIs in North Ormesby this morning.
It's always a privilege to have the opportunity to share about our work at Rubies. We hope the ladies enjoy the rest of their day
