A feature wall can be one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to transform your home. With a myriad of options, from simple paint or wallpaper, to a clever use of tiles or wall cladding, you can adapt a feature wall to suit your home and budget.

Cast your eye around the areas in your home that look a bit bland, awkward corners that can't be decorated with accessories, or natural features that stand out, such as a fireplace or alcove – these are all great opportunities to introduce colour and pattern in an unexpected way with a feature wall.

Read on for ideas to get started.

Stripes

Stripes make for a great feature wall idea and provide some clever visual trickery too. Vertical stripes make rooms appear taller and ceilings higher, and generally speaking, the larger your space, the wider your stripe should be. Wide stripes lose impact in small spaces, while narrow stripes can be overwhelming in big rooms.

Statement Wallpaper

Every piece in collection with Harlequin is a ready-made feature wall (see image). This is a great one for a country kitchen, in sugary sweet colours and adorned with hand-drawn flowers.

Memory wall

Create a happy corner of your home where you display your most treasured items for a hit of dopamine whenever you pass by. The magic is in the mix, so add meaningful photos, trinkets from travels abroad, heirlooms, or anything else that sparks joy.

Plates

A pretty display of plates is a totally innovative, decorative tool for a bedroom. Mix and match your plates for a similar impact, and you could dial it up by covering your entire wall in a playful plate display.

Curtains

Curtains don't have to stop at the borders of a window and can instead extend across your walls (taking it behind the bed works wonderfully) to add a lightweight pleated feature.

Decorative Panelling

Wall panelling can truly transform a room, adding some visual interest, framing feature furniture and introducing an element of grandeur.

How To Dress A Sofa

A great sofa is the centrepiece of any living room. It pays to spend some time learning how to dress a sofa, making sure you’re creating that warm, cosy ambience for the heart of your home.

Cushions and throws

Cushions are a great way to easily change the look and feel of your sofa, especially if you have a neutral coloured sofa. Think colours, patterns, textures. Don’t be afraid to choose from a mix of textures, such as natural fabrics like linen, to boucle and tassels. These will give a cosy feel and add interest. Go for an array of sizes and shapes too; small rectangular cushions will work well against bigger square ones. For a smaller sofa, keep to one or two colours and textures, so as not to overwhelm. For a bigger sofa, you can use a few more, as you have more space to hold the different elements.
A throw is an easy way to layer textures and introduce a colour or pattern. And it can help protect your seat cushions, helping with the longevity of your sofa. Drape a throw over the arms for a cosier feel or fold it for a more refined look.
Top tip: use a sofa with storage for extra living room storage to keep all your extra accessories out of the way and on hand.

Side tables and coffee tables

A small side table, just large enough to hold a table lamp or a small plant and your cup of tea, placed at the end of your sofa will help your sofa feel “complete.”

Ottomans and footstools

A medium or large ottoman can be a stunning alternative to a coffee table. Dressed with an elegant tray, it will add an air of opulence to your living room, making it look like something out of a glossy magazine. Choose an ottoman or footstool that matches your sofa for the option to transform it into a chaise. Or go for a bold colour that stands out in a luxurious velvet fabric. An ottoman is certainly the more versatile option, with convenient storage space to house your extra cushions or your bedding if you have a sofa bed.

These adaptable, stylish pieces are here to revolutionise your living room. If you haven’t yet considered a modular sofa, it’s time to rethink your furniture game. Let’s dive into the delightful benefits of modular sofas…

Customisable Comfort

Ever feel like Goldilocks on a quest for the perfect seating arrangement? With a modular sofa, you can kiss those woes goodbye. These sofas allow you to configure and reconfigure to your heart’s content. Want a cosy corner for movie marathons? Done. Need more seating for that inevitable family gathering? Easy. In the grand tapestry of home furnishings, modular sofas are the versatile, stylish threads that tie everything together. So, if you’re looking to elevate your living room game, a modular sofa might just be your new best friend. Ready to make the switch? Your back (and your living room) will thank you.

How To Style A Smaller Room

As space becomes more and more of a premium, it’s essential to know how to style a smaller room. But decorating a compact space doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or comfort. With clever styling and furniture choices, you can still create a cosy and inviting space without feeling cramped. Here are some tips on how to style a smaller room:

1. Choose the right furniture

When it comes to a small living space, compact furniture is crucial. You don’t want furniture that takes up too much floor space or appears bulky. Instead, choose furniture that has multiple uses and can be stowed away when not in use. For example, sofa beds are a great option for smaller rooms as they provide seating during the day and can be converted into a bed at night.
Modular sofas are another great option. Being more streamlined, you get the seating without the added bulk of bigger armrests.

2. Stick to a light colour palette

When decorating a small room, it’s important to stick to a light colour palette. Lighter colours reflect light and create the illusion of a bigger space. You don’t have to sacrifice style as many neutrals, such as beige or grey, can still create a modern, sophisticated look while making the room feel larger.

3. Choose statement pieces wisely

A common misconception about small spaces is that you can’t have any statement pieces of furniture because they take up too much space. However, this isn’t necessarily true; you should focus on the type of statement pieces you choose. A large, eye-catching rug or piece of art can add visual interest to a room without taking up any extra space.

4. Declutter and organize

Clutter can quickly make a small room feel even smaller. Invest in storage solutions like shelving, cabinets, and baskets so you can keep things organized and out of sight. Chaise storage sofas can provide ample storage space under the seating. A great way to hide away bits and bobs that aren’t used every day. And ottomans are a great alternative to a coffee table as they can serve as extra seating, provide storage and act as a coffee table.

5. Maximize natural lighting

Let in as much natural light as possible. This can create the illusion of a bigger space, brighten up the room, and create a more inviting atmosphere. You can achieve this by using sheer curtains, keeping windows dressings away from the window frame, or by not using curtains at all.

In summary, styling a smaller room can be a challenge, but with smart furniture choices, a light colour palette, and organization, you can create a stylish space that feels comfortable and inviting. Tips For Making Guests Feel Comfy

In Britain, we're sticklers for good hospitality. Having houseguests come to stay is the ultimate test of our hosting skills - and our homes. After all, these fine folk aren't just popping in for a brief cuppa, they're staying the whole night! And who knows how long the next day too...

Hosting overnight guests is the first real test of how visitor-friendly your home is. So, if you want to pass the inspection with flying colours, here's our advice on how to create a room your overnight guests will love. Although, hopefully not so much they'll become frequent visitors.

1. Invest in a quality sofa bed

Nothing will irritate your guests quicker than a poor night's sleep so ensuring they have a comfortable bed for the night is a must. Don't be tempted to cut corners when it comes to your sofa bed choice. A decent sofa bed is an investment and a quality one will last you at least a decade. Not to mention, your guests will thank you for it.

To avoid an awkward breakfast exchange, make sure you opt for a sofa bed that has a high quality mattress included. Not only will this give you an occasional bed that's as comfortable as an everyday bed, it will also help with hygiene (you'll be able to air and turn your mattress) and maintain its shelf life.

A quality sofa bed is the key to longevity. Not only of your furniture, but of your friendships too. Scrimp on one at your peril!

It's a common misconception that sofa beds always have a contemporary appearance. Yet styles like The Downton bear period-inspired features, making it ideal for guest rooms in more traditionally styled homes.

If space is an issue, a modular sofa bed is the perfect solution. Comprised of seating units that are individually connected together, The Westbury enables you to make up the exact size and configuration to suit your layout best. Plus, it still comes with your choice of high quality mattress too. From open and pocket sprung styles through to memory foam. So there's no compromise on sleep quality either.

2. Choose your furnishings wisely

Once you've settled on a quality sofa bed, you'll also have to dress the rest of your guests room with other practical pieces of furniture. It's best to start off with your sofa bed in its intended position and then work your way out from here. Don't forget to also allow for the sofa bed being pulled out too. Doing this might seem tedious but it will help you make sensible decisions about the other furnishings in the room.
A blanket box is a great choice for a guest room as it can serve multiple purposes. What's more, a quality blanket box also gives you extra space to store bedding for your guests exclusive use. Or, if your guest room doubles up as your kids' playroom between uses, its a great place to store and tidy away toys when your guests come to stay. If your guest room isn't quite big enough to comfortably accommodate a blanket box then a hallway or entryway is another great home for this supremely practical piece of furniture.

An armchair is another great way to give your guest room a touch of style. As well as providing comfy respite and a pew for your guests to put their feet up in privacy. An armchair in a guest room also helps to convey a feeling of staying in a hotel. Which is one way to make sure your guests are truly comfortable away from home.

Sure an armchair in your guest room is more of a luxury item than a necessity, but don't forget your guest room is also a spare room in your house. One you can make use of between visitors coming to spend the night. So, if the living room has been taken over by the kids and their friends. Or, the TV is so loud you can't hear yourself think a guest room is a place you can escape to and to get some peace, quiet and serious alone time. It's a place to get away from the madness, hustle, and bustle of home life.

So yes, on the surface an armchair in a guest room might seem like a luxury. But it also serves a very practical purpose.

3. Buy a beautifully upholstered bedstead

There's no greater luxury in another guest room than arriving to find an actual bed greeting you. So if space allows, a bedstead is the ultimate way to spoil your guests and ensure their comfort.

An upholstered headboard makes an impactful and stylish statement in a room. Plus, because it can be covered in a fabric type and colour of your choice, a bedstead is the ideal way to get a bespoke bed that ties in perfectly with your guest room décor.

A divan base with built-in drawers, or an ottoman that lifts up, won’t only provide a comfortable bed for your guests to sleep in. It will also offer internal area to store bulky items like bed sheets and towels out of sight until needed. Helping to claw back valuable space in airing cupboards and wardrobes, while keeping your home beautifully presented and clutter free.

Should You Buy Matching Sofas and Armchairs?

When it comes to furnishing your living room, the question of whether to buy matching sofas and armchairs can significantly influence the overall look and feel of your space. Here, we explore the pros and cons of matching furniture to help you make your choice.

The Case for Matching Sofas and Armchairs

- Cohesive Look

Matching sofas and armchairs create a uniformity that helps your living room appear well-organised and thoughtfully designed. It’s a popular choice for those who prefer a classic, streamlined look that’s easy on the eyes.

- Ease of Decorating

When your sofas and armchairs match, decorating around them becomes simpler. You can easily find complementary rugs, curtains, and accessories without worrying about clashing patterns or colours. This can save time and reduce the stress of coordinating multiple pieces.

- Timeless Appeal

Matching furniture sets are less likely to go out of style quickly, providing a long-lasting and elegant look. This can be particularly beneficial if you prefer a more traditional or minimalist design approach.

The Case Against Matching Sofas and Armchairs

- Personalised Style

Choosing non-matching sofas and armchairs allows for more personalised and eclectic décor. Mixing different styles, colours, and textures can add character and depth to your living room and you can make the space truly your own.

- Flexibility

If you like to update your living room’s look regularly, non-matching pieces offer greater flexibility. You can replace one item without feeling the need to change the entire set. This can be more cost-effective in the long run and allows for seasonal or trend-based updates.

- Dynamic Design

Combining different shapes, materials, and colours encourages a more relaxed and inviting atmosphere, which can be particularly appealing in a home with a casual or contemporary style.

Consider your lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, and how often you like to update your décor. There’s no right or wrong answer—just the one that best suits your taste and needs.

How to future proof your furniture

If you're a renter or a regular house mover, it's vital to invest in furniture that's future proof. So that any time you move home, your furniture easily adapts to your new environment without re-investing in new items each time.

So, with that in mind, here are our top 5 tips for choosing furniture styles that can move with the times. And wherever the wind takes you.

1. Buy a sofa bed

A sofa bed is a great investment piece of furniture to buy. Not only acting as the main sofa in your living room, but also ensuring you always have a place to sleep visiting guests. Even if you do decide to downsize later on in life.

2. Choose modular furniture styles

These types of sofa connect together in individual segments, and can be separated and reconfigured to adapt to a new room size or shape. So they're a brilliant choice if you want furniture that can move home easily.

3. Select sofa and armchair styles with removable arms and feet

Choosing removable arms and feet as a personalisation option comes in very handy. Arms and legs can take up vital extra inches of space. That can be the difference between your furniture making it through a doorway, or up a flight of stairs.

4. Invest in multi-functional furniture items

A divan or ottoman bed comes with internal storage built in. And likewise, a sofa style with under-seat storage is another way to save space. You could also consider using an ottoman as both a coffee table in your living room, and/or an extra seat. While a bed in a box is ideal if space is restricted and you need an extra bed for occasional use.

5. Choose colours and fabrics that don't date

The safest way to future proof your furniture's appearance is by selecting neutral colours for the biggest items in a room. A colour such as grey, for example. Not only does grey pair well with a variety of other colours, and come in a spectrum of light to dark shades. But as a colour it defies time and trends, meaning it won't look dated in years to come.

How to Protect Your Floors from Your New Sofa Bed

Bringing a new sofa bed into your home is an exciting upgrade, but it’s important to consider the impact it can have on your flooring. Whether you have hardwood, laminate, carpet, or tile floors, taking steps to protect them from the weight and movement of a sofa bed is crucial. Here are some effective strategies to ensure your floors remain in pristine condition.

Use a Rug or Carpet

Placing a rug or carpet under your sofa bed can provide an additional layer of protection. Not only does it act as a buffer between the sofa bed and the floor, but it also adds style to your room. Choose a rug that is large enough to cover the entire area where the sofa bed will be used, including when it is extended. This will help protect the floor from any movement or pressure.

Regular Cleaning

Dirt and debris can act like sandpaper under the weight of a sofa bed, causing scratches and wear over time. Regularly clean the area under and around your sofa bed. For hardwood or tile floors, consider using a damp mop to keep the area spotless.

Use Furniture Sliders

Furniture sliders are a practical solution for moving your sofa bed without damaging your floors. These sliders, typically made of plastic or felt, can be placed under the legs of the sofa bed to make it easier to slide across the floor. This is especially useful if you frequently rearrange your furniture or need to move the sofa bed for cleaning.

Regular Inspections

Make it a habit to regularly inspect the area around and beneath your sofa bed. Look for any signs of wear or damage to your floors and address them promptly. Early detection of issues can prevent more significant problems down the line.

These simple steps will not only preserve your floors but also extend the life of your new sofa bed, allowing you to enjoy its comfort and convenience for years to come.
