About

I was one when we first moved to Norfolk. Not quite born, but definitely bred in Norfolk. Whilst holidaying in Norfolk, my parents decided to view a house on a whim in Colkirk near Fakenham. It was a house they ended up purchasing. In his previous life as a product manager in Hampshire my dad had spent a lot of time working away from home. My parents were looking for a more flexible lifestyle to fit around bringing up a young family and Norfolk provided that.

Good food has always taken centre stage in the Christie household, so working with real food seemed the natural way to go. Fakenham Market was a buzzing market in the eighties with casual traders queuing up just for the chance of a pitch, and often being turned away. My dad, seeing an opportunity, spoke to the late Hugh Beck who ran the market, with an initial idea to sell just hams. Hugh mentioned that he could do with having a cheese stall since the previous market cheese man had retired... a perfect match for ham. And so the Christie's Cheese business was born.

The very first week started with an open stall of 5 traditional cheeses and a cooked ham. He sold out within hours... the demand was obviously there! Over the next month my dad worked with a friend to convert and fit out a classic 70's touring caravan fit for purpose and expanded to Swaffham and Dereham markets with his offer of fine cheese and home cooked ham-on-the-bone.

At the time fine cheese was hard to come by outside London, and a handful of regional specialist cheese shops. Traditional cheese making had all but disappeared and there were no major Norfolk cheeses to be found. This made stock hard to get hold of in the early days. Many cheeses had to be sourced direct from farms and dairies across England through ad hoc arrangements.

One Cumbrian cheesemaker delivered when she visited her mother in nearby Norwich. They became good family friends. My grandparents collected direct from two farms in Lancashire and Cheshire still making territorials. They would then meet us midway in Melton Mowbray where dad was collecting Colston Bassett and Red Leicester. As a young boy I attended these trips, enjoying a pub lunch with my Grandparents, not quite comprehending the dedication behind the trip. Along with many traditional and artisan cheesemakers and independent cheesemongers up and down the land, the Christies were part of a slow revival of supporting real cheese production in the British Isles.

It started with an urgent call to keep British territorials alive, but the momentum grew to support English style cheeses, such as Binham Blue and even more recently French style artisan cheeses such as Baron Bigod. We are now proud to stock over 15 Norfolk cheeses, and rotate an ever evolving selection of over 50 traditional, farmhouse and artisan cheeses from further afield.

Long may the real food resurgence continue!
