St Joseph’s Chapel

It was a crisp Autumn October day; it had been three months since the whole family had
‘upped sticks’ and moved to our new home St. Josephs, a 10-bedroom house on the Mount
St. Bernard Abbey estate.
The days were getting shorter and colder the
four grandchildren were coping well
living in the middle of countryside
after being used to busy streets -
tree climbing making dens and
hiding. It was a strange feeling even
though there was nine of us living
together, sometimes it felt isolated
and lonely place.
We were all outside clearing the
garden ready for the Winter.
In the garden there was an old coach house
where Kevin had stored his tools and
coracles and at the end of this, another room looking out over St. Joseph’s field. Kevin
decided to set out to clear this room. There were old tyres and all sorts of stuff including
mud, hay and a layer of dust, so he took his spade and dropped it down and after hearing a
thud, he realised he had hit a cobbled floor. He started to clear the floor with a measure of
excitement, he thought, ‘could this be our chapel our place where we could come together
and share our little prayers together’.
As the day unfolded, the grandchildren joined him and then the rest of the family, to continue to clear the floor.
Ant said, it reminded him of the
church at St. Peters on-the-wall in Essex.
The children really got into it, and we all felt part of something much bigger than we could
imagine. We kept digging and clearing until the floor was cleared leaving an old tree trunk
on the floor which later Kevin made into our altar. That evening we bought fish and chips,
and all sat eating them around the television watching a film of the story of St Francis and
the rebuilding of the church of San Damiano. After, we sat in our little ‘San Damiano’, our
new chapel and said our first prayers.
The little chapel of St. Joseph’s has served us well for the last fifteen years and many pilgrims
have called by.
Sadly, this year in the bad storms one of the windows was ripped out and
everything got soaked and damaged.
Part of telling this story is to start an appeal for us to rebuild the chapel again and this time to open a small doorway in the wall so those that
struggle to walk upstairs can still access the chapel.
We prayerfully are asking for £1350 to
complete the works.
God Bless

Although we can often overdose on quotes, I love this one, although Stoism without the providence of God can be risky!!

🌟 Super Star Steph 🌟

Many of you will recognise Steph. She came to volunteer at our tearoom with YMCA Derby in 2019, and wowed us with her hard work and kind heart. She has had many personal struggles but has pushed through to excel in all she undertakes.
You may have also noticed that Steph hasn’t been in the tearoom for a while. She has been training to be a 999 call handler.
Once again she has out done herself by passing all her tests and is now fully qualified. ⭐️

Well done Steph. We are so proud of you, and can’t wait to see what’s ahead in you new journey.
