Andrea - Banksperson - Women Into Construction | Changing The Face Of Construction 16/11/2023

It’s time for another Journey into Construction, a series which showcases the pathways our WiC participants take, as they enter the world of Construction.

Today we are thrilled to bring you Andrea’s story…

Andrea was referred to WiC by her Department for Work and Pensions - DWP work coach following conversations where she expressed a desire to understand more about opportunities within Construction.

Andrea was based in East Anglia which made her a perfect candidate for our East Anglia Hub which is run in partnership with Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) of Work & Pensions, Hill Group UK, Morgan Sindall Construction, Lovell Partnerships Ltd and Clarion Futures.

Following a one-to-one session with WiC Project Co-ordinator, Jade Jenkins, we introduced Andrea to Morgan Sindall’s Senior Site Manager, Danny Branson following which we enrolled Andrea on the CSCS and Banksperson training which Andrea passed with flying colours!

We are delighted that Andrea was offered the role of Banksperson with Morgan Sindall Construction! Read more about her story below:

https://women-into-construction.org/andrea-banksperson/

We would like to wish Andrea lots of luck and thank Morgan Sindall Construction for all their continued support. We would also like to thank Hays for the support they gave Andrea throughout the process.

Andrea - Banksperson - Women Into Construction | Changing The Face Of Construction In July 2023, Andrea was referred by her DWP work coach to WiC following conversations where Andrea expressed a desire to understand more about opportunities within Construction. 21 women joined WiC Project Managers Anna Walterskotter and Steph Sheppard who were all able to hear from the participating Members and understand more about the types of roles available. We caught up with one of the participating women who said; ‘'Thank you for the wonderful event. It was so helpful to hear from employers as well as wonderful women from different areas.’

Anna also told us after the event; ‘What a great line up of employers with such a wide variety of job offers as well as opportunities for work placements and graduate programmes. Thank you so much to them all!’

Our 3rd Cohort of the Women into Home Building started their Online Insight Week this week!

The group of 22 women are from a range of backgrounds including those with construction-related degrees, those working as trades, mothers returning to work and those looking to move industries and utilise upon their transferable skills – it is our biggest Cohort to date and we would like to thank HouseBuildingCareers Barratt Developments Bellway Cala Group Limited Hill Group UK Keepmoat Persimmon Homes Redrow St. Modwen Homes and Vistry Group for their support in delivering this fantastic programme.

So far the women have been introduced to the Home Building sector from Redrow, a workshop showcasing NATIONAL HOUSE-BUILDING COUNCIL (NHBC) and what they offer and an insight into Bellway's Health and Safety. The rest of the week encompasses CV workshops from Barratt, sustainability from Bellway, Modern Methods of Construction from Vistry, Confidence and Resilience Building from Keepmoat as well as interactive Site Manager activity sessions from The Hill Group and opportunities to meet employees from Bellway, Hill Group and St Modwen Homes.

We caught up with one participant who told us; ‘ Thank you for arranging an extremely informative and engaging session Steph. Truly it was so interesting. You know zoom sessions can be so boring but I was on the whole time and I’m learning so much. Brilliantly arranged and you’ve managed to have all the right people. My masters degree didn’t teach me as much as these two days lol.’

Next stop – the two-week work placements which will be happening at sites across the country!

WiC have been busy in the North East delivering the training part of the Women into Construction Employment Programme.

A speed interview event concluded the three week training course delivered with our programme partner Gateshead College

The speed interview event was held directly with the participating employers - not an easy task as can feel daunting but the women were all fantastic! The employers were very impressed and are all looking forward to working with them during the upcoming work placements.

The three week training period also included helping build confidence and resilience skills, creating impactful CVs, asbestos awareness training, a week exploring trades such as Joinery and hard skills, a site visit to get to grips with bricklaying and the all important CSCS cards!

The women have started their work placements this week EQUANS-Group, Jewson Places for People, RED Engineering and Countryside Partnerships in and around the Newcastle area.
We look forward to seeing how the women progress throughout their work placement period!

As part of Women into Construction’s continued partnership with High Speed Two Limited (HS2 Ltd), we were excited to hold an information session at their Snow Hill offices on Wednesday 20th September, to launch our next Young Adults Employability Programme.

Hosted by WiC Project Managers, Steph and Anna, the event was attended by 21 women all interested in finding out more about the 4-week programme and the opportunities available upon participation. Our new Operations Director, Dee Aylett-Smith, also attended as she was keen to meet the women too!

Steph kicked off the event by introducing WiC and explaining more about the programme, including details of the construction related training which will be delivered by The Digital College. Beatriz Ramos Albert, the HS2 project lead, then took to the floor to introduce HS2, provide an overview of what their works, currently the largest infrastructure project in Europe, entails and also showcased the types of roles that are available during work placement.

We were also extremely lucky to have 2 guest speakers; Susan Bridges, Senior Stakeholder Manager and Amanjeet Sangha, Assistant Project Manager, who spoke about their careers to date and their current roles within HS2 as well as how they will be supporting the women whilst on placement. Amanjeet is a WiC alumni from our first cohort so it was particularly great to hear about her progression in the last three years.

Special thanks, as always, to Julie Venn-Morton for her continued support.
