๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒฟMeet the Team ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฑ

It's been a while since we've done a Meet The Team post, so I thought it would be nice for our all to meet the team behind our Little Explorers.

Some of you may already know Anne-Marie as she's been part of our adventure team for a while, and next term, she'll be running Little Explorer sessions in Ladywell Fields:

Iโ€™m Anne-Marie, a passionate Forest School leader and primary music teacher who loves singing and playing outdoors!

During lockdown 2020, I had the opportunity to witness my own toddler's remarkable growth and development from spending time in nature. This greatly inspired me to swap the classroom for the outdoors and train for the Level 3 Forest School Leader certificate.

I am passionate about fully immersing children in all that the natural world has to offer; fostering their curiosity and connection with nature. My aim is to provide a nurturing space where ALL children can thrive.

Iโ€™m really excited to be leading the sessions in Ladywell after Easter. I hope you will come and join me for some bug hunting, digging in the mud and nature crafting!

Look what we spotted in Dacres Wood this week ! A gorgeous newt ๐Ÿ˜

Newts are just one of the species of amphibious reptiles that live in Dacres Wood. They can live in and out of water, and although their bodies are similar to that of a lizard, they have smooth skin with no scales. Spending most of their lives on land, in damp undergrowth, they return to water for breeding.

Did you know that newts eat a variety of prey, including snails and worms? Building a pond in your garden, even a small one, and creating some damp places where they can help encourage newts into your harden and help keep the number of unwanted visitors at bay.

They rank amongst my favourite animals, and its a real treat to spot one.

Nest Week for our Little Explorers

We're looking high and low for nests this week and have spotted magpies flying around with twigs in their beaks, busily building their nests, and moorhens lining theirs with reeds from the pond. We've also had a peak at some old nests that have been collected over the years, fascinating to see that they've been built out of sticks, grass, spider webs and lined with moss.

We're building our very own nests out of clay and sticks, and lining them with raw wool and moss.

This week, we're having fun whipping up some tasty treats for our wildlife friends in our nature clubs! Even though it might be milder than usual for this time of year in the UK, we know that winter could sneak up on us soon.

It's the time of year when animals start gearing up for the colder months by eating lots to add those extra layers of fat that keep them warm. We're giving them a helping hand by crafting these delicious goodies to hang up in our garden. Originally meant as bird feeders, we're sure they'll be enjoyed by all our garden visitors.

Hedgehog week for our explorers this week

We've been having fun learning about our prickly friends, finding out where they live, what they like to eat and where they go in winter.

Our Little Explorers are turning into Blackberry Monsters this week. They've been busy collecting blackberries, and the berries that don't get eaten have then been used to make pictures by pressing, squishing, and stomping them into fabric. They've also had a go at making tumeric paint, watching the colours transform as they're mixed together. Lots of mess and lots of fun ๐ŸŽจ ๐Ÿ–Œ

It's so lovely to be back outdoors with our Little Explorers!

It was a beautifully sunny morning to welcome our under 5s back to the Scout Hut in Brockley. As well as spotting lots of snails and spiders on our bug hunt, we've started the term by getting messy with natural paints, squishing berries, and making tumeric paint.

Our sessions start back tomorrow.

I can't wait to hear all about our explorers' adventures over the summer. I wonder what sort of wildlife they've spotted?

There's still spaces to join our under 5s stay and explore sessions, running from 10-11.30am Mondays (Brockley), Tuesdays (Ladywell Fields and Forest Hill) and Fridays (Brockley).
