We assisted West Midlands Police with Vehicle Systems Forensics on this tragic case which sadly still shows the level of criminality on our streets in the UK.
This was a dynamic, complex and fast paced investigation in the first instance where we worked with investigators understanding their needs for us to be called out over a weekend to assist with data recovery from the vehicles as people were in custody and clearly attempts needed to be made for remand applications with any significant evidence against arrested suspects.
What ensued was a rather complex investigation on our behalf with regards to to the Vehicle Systems, their operating limitations and we ended up performing a digital reconstruction to test and prove hypothesis but more importantly understand the limitations of the systems and data.
Exceptionaly grateful for both West Midlands Police Investigators and the CPS to trust in our strategies and proposed actions in being able to report our findings with the known limitations for the court to consider.

A reminder that we understand those pressures in the initial phase of a serious investigation having worked on them many times in the past and will support you with Vehicle Systems Forensics if you pick up the phone and ask for advice.
Case study to follow and research paper which may help future investigations understand some of these systems and their limitations if they arise again.

Thankfully it appears the key evidence came from the community who did the right thing.

We are at the College of Policing National Digital Investigators Conference today and tomorrow.
If your are here come and say hi - the vehicle is likely the most complex computer you will encounter in your investigations.
Oh we are strategically placed next to the coffee station too 😉
We worked with West Midlands Police on this investigation by examining the vehicle used. We were able to digitally link suspects to the vehicle at the time of the incident. Unlike a fingerprint this digital evidence showed suspects in the vehicle at the time. Need help on your case? DM.
Module 1 of our training programme is live in The Vehicle Network app.
This course stays with you for life with a current subscription to the app; it improves with age. The course has already has 2 updates since it’s launch that students on the programme have benefited from.
Complimenting this learning for those with an appetite for more are the weekly Friday Feature Videos along with the podcasts (our latest one is on digital triage).
In person courses will be commencing in 2023 (Dates to be announced) but in the meantime you can get started in the vehicle network app with module 1 and self study.

We will be presenting at the inaugural Secure Our Streets conference tomorrow run by the Automotive Security Research Group (ASRG).
This presentation will detail cases we have dealt with involving Vehicle Systems Forensics and will impress on the already 600+ registered attendees on how automotive systems can leave a digital trace to assist in detecting serious crime occurring in our communities and how future developments need to be considered to help keep our streets safe.

We are up in on Thursday to present at on how we have used to assist LE in some of the UKs most serious major crime & fatal collision investigations. If any of our network are up there come and say hi 👋
We worked with West Midlands Police on this case to support them with Vehicle Systems Forensics.
✅ Written Forensic Strategy Devised

✅ Components Recovered
❌ Infotainmet non Berla Supported
✅ Chip Off Performed
✅ Data Reconstructed
✅ Crucial Evidence Recovered

This essentially follows the exact same model we have developed our Vehicle Systems Forensics training programme on.
If you either need the support of our services in your crime and collision investigations then just contact us as West Midlands Police did.
If you want to increase your internal capabilities to do this work yourself then you can get started now as our module one - Planning & Strategies is live in The Vehicle Network App at the launch price of just £99.99! (Going up to £240).
Arguably this could be the most important stage of the process with the questions asked at court in this case.
DM or comment for details of training or external support options.
Schoolboy paralysed after being shot for going to wrong part of city Zidann Edwards and Diago Anderson, both 20, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, gunned the boy down for straying on to their 'turf'.
Module 1 of our Vehicle Systems Forensics Training Programme went live at the weekend.
We have built an App (The Vehicle Network) to host this training and make it accessible to anybody with access to a PC, phone or tablet.
There is a distinct lack of this type of training globally for an area of forensics that is motoring on (no pun intended) with little in the way of a recognised infrastructure (car v computer, what’s it called this week, who is taking ownership of the field!).
We have put this together on the back of six years dedicated in the field of doing this work looking at all modules and data types from the vehicle, attending court, dealing with evidence and procedure in the field and want to give this back to those that need it.
This introductory module gives you an opener to what it’s like, what’s involved and some pointers as to how to do this work effectively.
We have launched on a platform and at a price point that hopefully makes it both accessible and affordable to those that want to learn more.
Comment or DM for further info but essentially you just need to download the application, take an annual subscription (£39.99) on the essentials and community plan then the course is £99.99 (until 5th sept 2022 where it will retail at £240).
You can secure it now and study at your leisure. The Application allows for the course to be hosted where it will always be with you and with an ongoing subscription will be updated to the latest info in this fast changing world.
This means you always have the latest training in this field on this topic - no new course, no out of date course material, always keeping you updated. This is a lifetime edition of this course.
Purchase once and get continuitly educated.

Man guilty of Liam Dent murder after dragging victim under car Liam Dent died when he was hit by a stolen car and dragged half a mile along a London road.
Please see details of how we will split the recently announced Vehicle Systems Forensics training up into different modules as we take you through the gears from crime scene to court room.
There is no mandatory requirement to complete all the modules. They are designed this way so that people can target the specific areas that will best add value to their role and self development.
You may be an analyst that is presented with vehicle data and need to put this into an evidential format whereby Module 4 would be applicable. You may be a DMI that is responsible for developing strategies and don’t see the end data whereby Module 1 would be applicable or you may be a practitioner carrying out the examinations whereby Modules 2 and 3 would help you develop in role.
If you want to shift through all the modules of Vehicle Systems Forensics then that is also an option to complete them all.
We will take a look at each module in more detail in future posts but if you are interested then please register by dropping an email to [email protected] where we will discuss on a one to one basis your needs and requirements and where that may best fit into the programme.

On the road down South for networking events.
This is a case we worked on with Acumé Forensic Ltd and Collision Forensics Ltd following a request by counsel acting for one defendant to identify vehicles from CCTV in the lead up to this incident and to assist them with the analysis & interpretation of a complex collision reconstruction to unravel accurately the sequence of events as they unfolded at the time.
A complex case with many skill sets required.
Six jailed for killing man after car chase - BBC News The group used a samurai sword, machete and wrench in an attack on three people in a car.
Details of a case recently concluded whereby all the team pulled out the stops on this one to recover data from the involved vehicle and support West Midlands Police with what has been described as a complex and challenging investigation.
It was certainly a challenging vehicle to work in for obvious reasons but also to maximise the examination between digital and traditional forensics was also complex.
Got there in the end!

Another milestone was reached for us yesterday as we presented (virtually) alongside some of the worlds leading vehicle forensics experts to an Interpol audience in over 140 countries on how vehicle forensics can help tackle serious crime.
We were able to share some of our experiences over the last five years in this field and help those people charged with serious crime investigations involving a vehicle across the world as to how to approach this area and exploit it to their advantage.
Extremely grateful to be recognised alongside the other speakers as people who are at the coalface of vehicle systems forensics examinations for serious crime investigations in a global context.
This week sees us end an era in Harper Shaw investigation Consultants Ltd as we prepare to come out of premises we have been in for the last 3 years.
More to follow in the coming weeks. We keep moving forward.
