With the environmental impact of plastic bags finally being recognised, we thought it would be nice to have a reusable shopping bag that can also be carried over the shoulder - quite difficult to do that with a supermarket shopping bag. We wanted it big enough to carry what a gentleman might purchase during the course of a Saturday morning; visiting his favourite shops in town - picking up a nice bottle of wine, some cheese, a small box of ci**rs, the weekend newspapers... and possibly double as a bag to carry the laptop and documents to the office or cafe. Realistically, it can also be used as a diaper bag should that need arise. It features two internal pockets and a key holder - so one doesn't have to go fishing for one's keys.

How the Udeshi Safari Jacket was born

Oscar’s father wore safari jackets in the 1970s to travel in, as they had four generous sealable pockets that could hold most things. Oscar remembered the pocket flap shape his father had specially made for him at the time, and the deep bellow pockets that expanded. This early childhood memory stuck with him and when it was time for him to make his own jacket, he replicated those details and added a half belt in the back, which when tightened, keeps the fronts further apart, perfect for what the Italians call a "passeggiata" or stroll. He also changed the left breast pocket, which is now angled for easy frequent access for right-handers, and is based on WW2 dispatch riders' angled map pockets on their coats. There is enough space for a city map, a small mobile, a cigar or three, or a pair of sunglasses. The lapel closes, not so much for warmth, but to keep the dust and rain out. Our jeans and khakis have red shirting quality pocket bags and a soft striped waistband that are much softer than the fabric turned waistbands of most jeans. The front raw fly edges have been taped in our soft pocketing resulting in a cleaner and more comfortable finish, equal to that of Savile Row bespoke trousers. Perfect!

Q. Does the lapel hole on a jacket serve another purpose or did everyone walk around with a flower or buttonniere in their lapel?

A. In the past, before social media, central heating and climate change, the winters were harsh and one wanted to protect as much of the body from the elements as possible. Jackets used to close up as high as possible and frequently to the collar. Jackets were buttoned lower in the warmer months, and eventually with the introduction of neck wear, the front of the jacket was folded back to form lapels. The button hole became a lapel hole, and stayed. The form of the hole changed from a key hole buttonhole for buttons to a straight hole, as there was no longer a button on the other jacket side to close. In the 16th century, buttonhole flowers were worn to ward off evil spirits and protect against disease, and as a form of deodorant, as baths were not that common then. Traditionally there was a loop on the underside of the lapel, below the lapel hole to hold the flower stem. Our jackets still have it.
