Effect of Reflexology on Pain, Fatigue, Sleep Quality, and Lactation in Postpartum Primiparous Women After Cesarean Delivery: A Randomized Controlled Trial - Ayşegül Kiliçli ID, Simge Zeyneloglu ID, 2024 15/06/2024

A great piece of research for those of you with pregnant clients.

This study was specifically in c-section patients and they found decreased pain, faster pain resolution, decreased fatigue, increased sleep quality and energy levels and in addition increased breastfeeding efficiency! Note their conclusion which is not specifically boundaried to this group of patients 'Foot reflexology reduces postpartum symptoms and positively affects breastfeeding and can be used safely in postnatal care practices.'

Reference: Kiliçli Id A, Zeyneloglu Id S. Effect of Reflexology on Pain, Fatigue, Sleep Quality, and Lactation in Postpartum Primiparous Women After Cesarean Delivery: A Randomized Controlled Trial. J Hum Lact. 2024 May;40(2):221-236. doi: 10.1177/08903344241232982. Epub 2024 Mar 1. PMID: 38426483.

ABSTRACT

Background: Mothers commonly experience pain, fatigue, sleep disruption, and breastfeeding problems after cesarean delivery. To date, no follow-up study has examined all of these variables to evaluate the utility of reflexology in reducing these problems and supporting breastfeeding.

Research aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of foot reflexology performed in the postpartum period on pain, fatigue, sleep quality, and lactation in primiparous women who underwent cesarean delivery.

Methods: This is a two-arm, parallel-group randomized controlled trial. Data were collected between January 1, 2020, and January 31, 2021, with a sample of 80 women who were randomly assigned to the reflexology (n = 40) and control (n = 40) groups. The reflexology group received 40 minutes of foot reflexology once a week for 8 weeks. The primary outcomes of the study were pain, fatigue, sleep quality, and breastfeeding efficacy.

Results: Pain scores in the reflexology group decreased by 90.9% in week 1, 90.2% in week 2, and 59.8% in week 3 compared to the control group. Pain resolved at week 4 in the reflexology group and week 7 in the control group. The reflexology group showed a 36.9% decrease in fatigue level, a 48.0% increase in energy level, a 70.7% increase in sleep quality, and a 20.2% increase in breastfeeding efficacy compared to the control group (p < 0.05).

Conclusions: Foot reflexology reduces postpartum symptoms and positively affects breastfeeding and can be used safely in postnatal care practices.

Hello, my name is Tanya and I live at home with my husband and sister-in-law, my boy Monty (a black lab!) and a flock of chickens. I love swimming and pottering around the garden and I love listening to books and podcasts. You’ll often see Monty and I walking around the village with my headphones in; so if I ignore you, then I am truly sorry, I am in my own little world!

I have always worked in health and social care, mainly in mental health but also with other client groups. However, after becoming the main carer for my sister-in-law, and after suffering an episode of burnout, I felt it was time to make some personal changes and to develop a healthier work-life balance. I wanted to be able to use the knowledge and skills I had learnt and developed over the years in a more holistic, positive and rewarding way and after finding complementary therapies helpful for my own health and wellbeing, I sought to train as a reflexologist.

That first day of training was incredible. It was life transforming! When you think, it’s actually pretty weird touching other people’s feet, well certainly in the Western world, and for me, that first day of training was the sudden realisation that I was going to have to touch a strangers feet 😂

I was initially paired with the wonderful Ruth, who is now running her own reflexology training college at In-Spires Reflexology College. We had the best day and I think we both had an epiphany after our first ‘treatment’ swap. For me, after years of working in a very medicalised environment, I couldn’t understand how it had taken me so long to realise the true power of something so ‘simple’, something that is non-intrusive, complementary of allopathic medicine and is so easily accessible!

That was day one and I’ve never looked back! Nine years later and I am still blown away by how this wonderful therapy has helped people for all sorts of reasons. I feel very honoured and privileged when people choose me to be part of their life, whether it’s for a brief time to manage one thing in particular or for years! I’m very excited to see what I learn and who I meet in the next nine years.

‘Reflexology in the workplace’ 🙌

This lovely feedback was actually from someone receiving reflexology in the workplace ☺️

‘Reflexology in the workplace’ is actually quite common in other countries but still a rarity here in the U.K.! Prior to Covid I was regularly working in offices including Oxfordshire County Council however that all obviously changed 🙄

Thankfully this is starting to change, which is wonderful given the benefits it can provide and when you think, employees are companies biggest asset, so what better way to support staff and show how valued and appreciated they are!

By removing or reducing some of the financial and time barriers for employee's accessing such services, it could pave the way for more employees to access services which they would otherwise not have the opportunity to receive. Additionally, reflexology treatments also provide an ideal situation to raise various health issues thus enabling people to identify healthier lifestyle choices, providing the perfect opportunity to positively impact on employees health.

Studies have been conducted of on-site reflexology in various work forces including Councils and the Danish Post Office which have shown:

✨ reduced absenteeism
✨ fewer sick days
✨ reduced pain
✨ increase in staff wellbeing and motivation
✨ increased satisfaction in the workplace
✨ increased feelings of support
✨ increase in loyalty

If you are interested in offering Reflexology in the Workplace, please contact me and I would be more than happy to offer a free consultation to discuss your organisations needs.

May the rest of you day be everything you need it to be

Home | Carers Week 05/06/2024

Carers Week this week is all about 'putting carers on the map' and increasing the visibility of carers with decision makers, services, employers, communities and businesses.

By highlighting the financial, employment and wellbeing challenges that carers are currently facing, we hope that policymakers and organisations will make the much-needed changes to provide better support.

If you want more information go to 'Carers UK' or 'Carers Oxfordshire'.

Best wishes

Home | Carers Week You're amazing! Through us all coming together and sharing our support, we can help ensure carers are recognised and supported in their communities. Your story will be displayed shortly, once our team has approved it.

Thank you for such lovely feedback and I am so pleased you felt this way.

A huge part of the success of any form of treatment, whether allopathic or complementary, is engaging with a practitioner that you feel safe with, who you can talk to and who leaves you feeling that you have been heard! So I am thrilled I was able to achieve this ☺️

We don’t always connect with everyone and so when trying out anything new, if you feel that it hasn’t ‘worked’ with one practitioner, doesn’t mean that the therapy won’t work for you!

Shop around! Speak to potential therapists and find the right person for you. It’s also important to find a therapist that is adequately qualified and insured.

For reflexology, in the U.K. we have The Association of Reflexologist’s who I’m registered with and Professional Reflexology, each have a ‘search for a local therapist’ facility. If you are looking for a complementary therapist in general, then head over to the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, who I’m also registered with.

May the rest of your day be everything you need it to be

Oh my, what a weekend we have had here in the Harrison household 🤭

It was Ilaines 60th birthday party and I just wanted to thank everyone for all their help and support, and to everyone that came, with making it such a wonderfully happy, memorable event. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

I obviously can’t share too many photos or names but I want to thank all the staff at Banbury Community Support Services for all they do and have done! Alex and I couldn’t do what we do without your support! But yesterday was above and beyond 🥹 And what a venue, Cheer M’Dears pub was the perfect setting, it had everything we needed and so much more 🙏

A huge thank you to Tom at JP’s Mobile Pizzeria too. The food was incredible - and the best gluten free pizza I’ve ever had - if you are ever holding an event, Tom is definitely your man for the job ☺️🙏

I also want to thank Paul and his team at Cotswold Baking. Having thought I was all organised, it wasn’t until a few days ago I realised I hadn’t arranged a cake…😱🤦🏻‍♀️ Paul organised two beautiful gluten free cakes - Tunisian orange and cranberry - and even delivered it to me in plenty of time!

And finally my wonderful friend Michelle who took these amazing photos ☺️🙏 I love having you in my life, thank you for being with us yesterday and doing such a wonderful job 🤗

It really was a special day 🥹🥰☺️ Everyone has gone home now and as the raging introvert that I am - although that photo of me proves I’m not so bad socially 😉🤭 - Monty and I have just had a very long walk in the fields to decompress and recharge! 😂

Life is such a rollercoaster though and I just want to add, I have three very dear friends who are all having a really sh*tty time at the moment and couldn’t be with us this weekend. You are in our thoughts and we all send you lots of love, light, hugs and a sense of humour!!! 😳❤️

May the rest of your weekend be everything you need it to be

Having a glorious day at Katharine House Hospice, providing staff with reflexology and reiki treatments ☺️

Bizarrely, this started off as a donation raffle prize for a reflexology treatment for the Banbury Christmas Tractor Run last Christmas.

The woman who won the prize, very kindly donated the treatment to a patient, any patient, here at Katharine House.

How do you decide which patient gets the treatment?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not only that, the logistics of volunteering can be complicated, so I suggested that I come for a day and treat staff.

Everyone that knows me, knows my passion is about staff health and wellbeing and supporting people to have a healthy work/life balance, so I was absolutely thrilled when they agreed. So thrilled I offered to volunteer for three days… 😂

This is my first day and it’s been such a wonderful experience. Everyone has been so nice, helpful and welcoming

Looking forward to seeing more of the team next month 🙏☺️

I love this review ☺️🙏🥰

There’s nothing more powerful than ‘word of mouth’ for a small business and especially for things like reflexology. After this person ‘floated’ out of my treatment room, heading straight for the bank, she clearly just had to share how wonderful she was feeling to anyone that would listen 🤭💜

Typically, after a reflexology treatment, I advise people to rest and embrace that relaxed feeling for about 24hours afterwards. However, as in this case, many people often find that they achieve their optimum when doing physical exercise the day after.

This 70 odd year old woman who - most impressively - only took up running a few years ago, ran her second fastest park run after her first reflexology session and keeps coming back for more to help her build on that 🙌 🏃‍♀️

Our Story

Peace, tranquility, quietness, rest
CALM COMFORT
This popular Irish word encapsulates the sense of serenity that is much striven for in modern life.

Mission Statement:
'Suaimhneas Reflexology's aim, is to improve the health and wellbeing of our clients by providing bespoke treatment aligned to meet the specific needs of each individual’

My name is Tanya and I live at home with my husband and sister-in-law, my boy Monty (a black Labrador!) and a flock of chickens. I continue to work in health and social care on a part time basis and work as a Reflexologist four days a week from a treatment room at the end of the garden.

I have worked in health and social care since I started volunteer work at the age of 15. Predominantly this has been in mental health but I have also worked with older adults and people with learning disabilities and physical disabilities. However after twenty years service and a few life changes, I felt it was time to make some personal changes and to develop a healthier work - life balance. I wanted to be able to use the knowledge and skills I had learnt and developed over the years in a more holistic, positive and rewarding way and after finding complementary therapies helpful for my own health and wellbeing, I sought to train as a Reflexologist.

I was fortunate to train under the tuition of Allison Walker at the Contemporary Reflexology College and qualified with a Centralia Mastership Level 5 in Reflexology. The comprehensive training this course provided, enables me to practice reflexology on the feet, hands and ears as well as the meridians and synergistically. I have received specialist training in providing reflexology for people living with cancer, those in need of palliative care and to support people requiring fertility and maternity support.
