🏆 Easy Steps to Success #2 - Eat the right foods.

We understand that there is nothing quite as tempting as a turkey dinosaur or a juicy burger. But what if we told you that your food consumption directly correlates to your academic performance...

Your diet has an extraordinary effect on your ability to learn, and if balanced right, the food you eat could be the difference between a Grade 8 and a Grade 9!

1) Breakfast - Porridge/Oats:
Research shows that students who eat breakfast perform better in exams compared to those who do not. Further, research shows that students who eat porridge for breakfast display an average 20-40% increase in alertness, memory, and concentration compared to those who do not eat the oat-based meal.
Porridge oats contain B-group vitamins, which are responsible for coating the nervous system. Stress, such as that experienced before an exam, depletes the level of B-group vitamins, in turn resulting in anxiety, reduced memory and poor concentration.

2) Lunch/Dinner - Salmon:
Salmon contains two types of omega-3 fish oil - docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). EPA and DHA are well known for their skin and heart health benefits. Additionally, these oils have an extraordinary impact on the brain. Omega-3 is vital in brain development and the maintenance of normal brain function. Consistent low levels of omega-3 oils may contribute to brain function deficits and accelerated brain ageing.

3) Snack/Drink - Beetroot:
Beetroots are high in nitrates which are vital for increased blood flow to the brain. Studies have shown that the consumption of beetroot directly correlates to the increased activity of the frontal lobe region of the brain. This region of the brain is associated with cognition and learning. We highly recommend trying out beetroot juice as a drink throughout the school day!

🏆 Easy Steps to Success #1 - Organise a morning routine.

Your social and cognitive development is helped largely by regular routines. In addition to ensuring that you get things done, setting and following a routine is directly correlated with stress reduction.

For students, it is recommended to set three different routines.
1) Morning routine
2) Afterschool routine (including time for homework/study)
3) Weekend routine (how you plan to relax)

Morning Routine: This is arguably the most essential routine. This routine will aim to get you ready for your day, so you can hit the ground running (and hopefully overtake those who haven't). It is essential to eat a healthy breakfast, as this will impact your energy levels around midday. Porridge is by far the best breakfast for students because it tastes great and forms a great source of slow-release energy, which is needed for all of the learning you are going to do throughout the day.

Afterschool Routine: Setting yourself an afterschool routine is also vital, as this will impact your ability to recall the information you have learnt throughout the day. It is important to include sufficient time in this routine to study and/or complete any homework you have been given. Your teachers set homework to ensure that the content they delivered during the day effectively embeds itself into your long-term memory. They follow a principle called the forgetting curve, a guide devised by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, a famous educational psychologist.

Weekend Routine: This is your opportunity to relax from your busy week! Make sure that your weekend routine is filled with fun activities that you enjoy doing!
