Making, making, replica Aquamanile today, the one we call 'Saladin', housed at the Barbican house Lewes, Sussex 13-14th century - will be glazed in a vibrant green glaze a d wood fired next week...

The other one is a small mouse? or other small mammal, Aquamanile, this one is German dated 1300-1500. We don't know why the potter wanted to use this figure, it amused us! The mighty and the mouse! Pots of history, we often get asked why is a pot decorated that way, and why the mouse 🀷

Last show done of the year, Glastonbury is a very special place indeed, stole away an evening over the vale of Avalon to watch the mesmerising murmurations. Enjoyed the uniqueness of the town, still fiercely independent, great to be part of it for a short time

Frosty, beautiful morning, ❄️❄️❄️❄️at Glastonbury Frost Fayre❄️❄️❄️❄️

24/11/2023

It's a beautiful puzzling thing, such a great pot 😊

Medieval puzzle jugs were made for drinking games, where the β€˜puzzle’ was how to drink from the jug without getting drenched from the spouts at the sides, which connect to a chamber at the bottom.

This green glazed puzzle jug dates from around 1300 and was found when foundations for the new Town Hall in Oxford were being dug in 1895. The face masks around the rim are a typical Oxford decoration, and it would have been filled through the hole at the top of the hollow handle.

Inns, alehouses and taverns have been part of life in the City of Oxford since around 1200. They provided accommodation as well as being sociable places for drinking, eating and gaming.

🧩 Puzzle jug, 1250–1350. Brill / Boarstall ware. Town Hall site, Oxford. AN1921.202

An 'indented' beaker Roman beaker that's been lying in the mud for almost 2,000 years. A magical moment from a couple of years ago.

Made from the Saxon/Norman period, the one in the clip is a replica 14th century style, they are rare in Archaeology finds, but not isolated to one time or region, and they just work a treat.

Replica Roman Mortaria, steadily building Roman stock up again as all my Roman stock sold to a film company, as always unable to say where, what, how or why.

I really enjoy the technical details of the function of Roman pottery. The potters' skills throughout, just leave me speechless and I like to be challenged. Kudos to those potters that helped bring good food and wine to the tables. Happy doing the same.....
