Myths and Misinformation about Long Acting Reversible Contraception

There are a LOT of misconceptions about long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs)

LARCs are contraceptive methods which are more ‘set it and forget it’ compared to taking a pill every day. A LARC can provide lasting protection from as little as 8 weeks to as long as 10 years!

However, like all contraceptives, they come with myths and misconceptions, some of which drive people away from using them.

❌ “IUDs cause pelvic inflammatory disease”

Fact: Modern-day IUDs do not cause pelvic infections. This was a concern in the 1970s when IUDs were not as safe, but nowadays, the risk is virtually none. There is a tiny chance of pelvic infection in the first 20 days after insertion.

❌ “Implants can move around your body”

Fact: A correctly placed implant may shift a little, but almost always no further than an inch.

❌ “IUDs cause infertility”

Fact: Studies prove that IUDs do not cause infertility.

❌ “LARCs cause ectopic pregnancy”

Fact: It is about 10 times less common to have an ectopic pregnancy while using LARC compared to not using contraception at all.

❌ “LARCs are really painful to administer”

Everyone is different - some people say they barely feel their injection, implant or IUD be inserted, while others say the anaesthetic injection for the implant stings or that IUD insertion is like a bad menstrual cramp.
