Do you base the number of garments you sew, jumpers you knit or pieces you embroider on what you actually need and want for you? Or do you base them on a need to share more and new makes on social media to get new followers and those precious likes?

It is pretty obvious at this stage of the social media game that the number of followers and the hearts you get with each post mean a lot to many (and I am raising my hand here). We post a picture of a beautiful dress we have just finished and wait, even if we don’t want to admit it to ourselves, to see the reaction of our followers. If the picture doesn’t get as many hearts (or likes) as we expect or comments praising our dress, we feel disappointed and even, a bit sad.

“But I put a lot of effort in the pictures”, "and I finished it on time (so that you don’t think I am not a productive crafter)”, “and I spent a lot of money on this fabric (because it is trending now) and I am not getting the response I want". And on and on and on… (Again, I am all of the above).

Then, the cycle starts again. “Ok, I will buy more fabric and I will make another dress (even if I don’t need it, can afford it or actually want to) and this time people will give me all their hearts, and they will reshare my post and I will get more followers and….”, maybe find everlasting happiness? Because I have done all of the above and haven’t found it (not there), and what’s more, it has made me feel pretty miserable and anxious.

And of course, receiving a compliment is nice or producing a high number of garments (or whatever your craft is) because it makes YOU happy is great. But when we get caught-up in the social media game of it all, that’s just a fruitless battle where the main losers are your bank account and, most importantly, your self-esteem.

Because the companies behind the social media apps are just there for the money, plain and simple, and they don't care how their aggressive marketing strategies and twisted algorithms affect your mental health or push you to compare yourself to others. Because, for them, if you feel that way, that's on you.

Let's not let them take our joy for crafting away.

Thank for reading,
Ana

Hi everyone! I am writing this post to let you know that I will be taking a social media / newsletter break till at least the beginning of July. There are different reasons for this but the main one is that we are moving countries at the end of next month so I need to focus on that 🙂

The online shop will stay open though, so you can still access all the patterns 💪 If you encounter any issues or if you have any questions you can of course send me an email as I will still be working behind-the-scenes 👩‍💻🤗

Last, I wanted to say a huge thank you for your orders this month since I shared the discount. They have been a great help and have also encouraged me to keep going. Thank you also for your messages, comments and for being there supporting me and CocoWawa 🥹😍♥️

See you soon!

I am imperfect and my makes are as well, a mini essay

The traditional (and supposedly desirable) meaning behind the adjective PERFECT (and its variables) has haunted me since I was a little girl. “Be the perfect daughter”, “be the perfect sister”, “be the perfect student”, “be the perfect friend”, ‘be perfect, Ana”.

Now, as a 41-year-old woman who has called herself a ‘perfectionist’ one too many times at therapy sessions while dealing with chronic anxiety, I keep struggling with the concept of perfectionism and how I still try to apply it to every single aspect of my adult life and, of course, to all the things I make.

Have you ever caught yourself criticizing the hem of your new dress, the finishing of a quilt or how you have skipped a few stitches when knitting a jumper? Because I have and not only during those catastrophic projects where everything that could go wrong, goes wrong (hello, ‘forgot to add the seam allowance before cutting’ shirt), I can always find a flaw, big or small.

And I hate to admit that many times that flaw becomes the only thing that I see when wearing the garment. And I get sad, and frustrated, and I criticize myself for not being able to sew, knit or quilt to PERFECTION.

There’s that word again... And sometimes I wonder, what does it even mean that something or someone is perfect? Where does the line between perfect and imperfect lie? What constitutes, for example, that a handmade dress is perfect and another is not? It is when it looks ‘shop-bought’, when the seams have been finished with a serger, when the fit is… perfect?

Maybe we could deviate from the traditional meaning behind the word perfect, start showing our flaws more openly on social media (not only the perfect finished makes) and create our very own ‘this is what perfection means to me’.

Or we could at last embrace the fact that we, as humans, are not perfect, that we are, actually, IMPERFECT and so are our makes, and that’s ok because there’s beauty in IMPERFECTION. Or at least, this is what I try to tell myself every day ♥️

This is me, in colours 🥰 And you? Which is your colour palette? 💁 If you need some tips to find or create your own for your next dressmaking or quilting project, have a read ⤵️

🌈 Use photographs or pictures as inspiration. Gather ideas using Instagram or Pinterest.

🌈 Create paper or fabric swatch cards or order them from your favourite fabric store.

🌈 Draw your own colour wheel or buy one to better understand colour combinations.

🌈 Play with colour palette generator apps like Pantone or Coolors.

🌈 Explore mixing light and dark colours.

🌈 Practice with your fabric stash.

🌈 And last, keep it simple until you feel more confident with time 😄💪
