active aerated 55 gallon compost tea brewer with waterfall and venturi . 04/01/2016

This is a great, simple design for an actively aerated recirculating venturi fed compost tea brewer. This design means that you do not need a mesh bag to hold your compost and literally costs less than £80 to make (aside from the reservoir). The venturi and the waterfall take care of oxygenating your tea, and because the brewer is pumped from the bottom, there will be no dead spots and no need for a tapered vortex brewer, so you can use an ordinary reservoir.

The Haze story and more. Warning: very long read - Romanian Cannabis Talk - International... 20/12/2015

This is the background behind some of the most important cannabis genetics in the last few decades. Haze, Skunk and Northern Lights are all present, and the story contains quotes from Nev, Shanti and others. Its a long read but well worth it to understand how the majority of genetics over the last 2-3 decades are in some way decended from the hybrids created by these early pioneers of our industry.

Microbe Organics 10/12/2015

If you are interested in compost teas or organic culture then I cannot recommend this site, Microbe Organics by Tim Wilson enough. Great detailed instructions on how to build your own powerful brewer as well as recipies for the ACT itself. All of the research done on the site is backed up by Tims own data that he has observed through a microscope.

Jack the Ripper Ma*****na Strain Review By Subcool 08/12/2015

I was reading this review earlier by TGA Subcool of his own strain "Jack the Ripper" which is described as one of the best 8 week sativas out there. What particularly interested me was that he said the strain has been tested as particularly high in THCV content. THCV is stronger recreationally than THC and has unique medicinal effects aside from THC. The two samples that he shows testing for, which were apparently from two different sources tested at 5% and 6.5% THCV. I thought that THCV came from increased UV and high altitudes, I didn't know certain strains had an increased potential although it makes sense. Does anyone else know of any high THCV strains?

Jack the Ripper Ma*****na Strain Review By Subcool I was sent this guest post by one of my personal heroes, Subcool. If you haven’t visited his site yet, TGAgenetics.com, then you are really missing out. The guy is a genius, and there are so many strains out there that own their very existence to this legend, including my FAVORITE strain, Jack...

The Official Teaming With Microbes Website | Musings and interesting stuff from Jeff Lowenfels,... 04/12/2015

If you are interested in organics or the soil food web then I cannot underestimate just how informative the books "Teaming with microbes" by Jeff Lowenfels & Wayne Lewis and "Teaming with nutrients" by Jeff Lowenfels. There is a lot of misinformation or lack of knowledge on this subject out there, often from the people that are selling you the beneficials themselves. Most people know that trichoderma and other beneficial funghi and bacteria will be killed with the presence of chlorine in the water supply, but I lost count of the amount of times I was told trichoderma were fully compatible with mineral feeds (Which is untrue - NPK chemical fertilisers kill microbial life). Makes you wonder, do they know and not care that they are allowing customers to waste money on granules and aktrivator that will be immediately killed with chemical fertilisers - or do they not know themselves, in which case why are they selling the products?

A convenient PDF reference on how to make an ACT (aerated compost tea) from the knowledgable folk at BioAG. The purpose of brewing ACT is to multiply the microbes present within the compost you are using in order to populate the soil with the benficial cultures that you desire. These cultures then directly interact with the roots of your plants in order to feed and innoculate them.

The timing was perfect actually, just when I logged on to delete the profile, it asked me to confirm my identity, so it would have happened either way. Part 3 of my Chinese Vac oven guide:

3) After sales service/support? This is a crucial one really, because if something goes wrong and you do not have any support, then your oven is going to effectively become a 40kg burden. Of course, most suppliers are not based in this country, so you are not going to be able to ship the oven back to the manufacturer for any kind of reasonable cost. The best option is to have a manufacturer that will give you a period of support (normally 1 year) where they will mail you any parts required for free and advise you on how to install them. It is also important to ensure that your oven has been tested before it has been sent out to iron out any initial problems. Any respectable manufacturer will do this, normally for at least 12 hours so I would be very suspicious of a manufacturer that does not offer this kind of quality control. Your oven should be shipped with a comprehensive manual and you should also request custom PID values (or get them to configure them before the oven is sent out) from the manufacturer. This is because the temps that we are purging at (under 100F) are particularly low and most ovens come configured as standard to work at higher temperatures. Getting a PID value that works for our temperature range helps to minimise overshoot and increase stability for your oven. Finally if for whatever reason you do need a spare or part that your supplier is unable to provide, Across international do a pretty comprehensive range of spare parts and while they are not cheap to buy and import, I have found that (suprisingly enough) they are perfectly compatible with my Chinese oven.

Easy Organic Soil Mix for Beginners - Organic Growing 22/11/2015

If anyones thinking of starting a super soil mix, then this post by InTheGarden could be of use to you. I know there are several mixes out there including TGASubCools super soil, but I like this one because it does not rely on any commercial compost blends and it is easier to make it veganic (animal free). I think this is a good thing due to concerns about the quality of blood and bone meal used in fertilisers.

Part two of my series of pointers on buying a cheap vac oven from china:

2)What is the specification available? You should consider this as you are searching for models and ask the companies rep if there are any upgrades available. If they are unable to supply upgrades or customisation, then it is quite likely they are middlemen and should be avoided as discussed in part 1 yesterday. At a basic level, your oven should have 4 or 5 sided heating (top, bottom, sides, back) for optimal temperature uniformity. This should be standard and not an extra that is charged a premium for.

0.9 Cu Foot is the smallest size most manufacturers offer and this is fine for personal runs, however if you are doing runs for multiple people or large runs of over 50g, you are probably going to want to look at a 1.9 Cu Foot. You will need a more powerful pump for this, at least 6 - 8 cfm from a reputable manufacturer (I recommend Yellow Jacket or Robinair for this, not Alibaba!). You will also want to check what outlet is offered to connect your pump to your oven. Most will offer a hose barb KF25 fl**ge, which means that you would have to use a jubilee clip to secure your hose to the fl**ge. Better to get the option to get a threaded 3/8" flare adapter if its available. With a 3/8" flare hose, this allows you to secure both the oven and the pump nicely with no extra fittings.

Extra upgrades that I have been offered include an upgraded PID which has much more functionality in terms of programmable steps and memory banks, which are largely outside the scope of our usage. It does have a much nicer display, but it is hardly money well spent as at approx $300, it is one of the more expensive updates available and to be honest the simpler type of PID does the job perfectly well. I have also been given the option of an extra air outlet with a ball valve and barbed inlet as well as the rubber stopper conventionally found on ovens for approximately $70. I like this upgrade as it allows you more precise control over the level of air you are allowing back into the chamber when you are lowering the pressure again. Nothings worse than letting that bit too much air into the chamber when its under vac and seeing your slab explode! Amateur mistake but it can be easily done (I know from experience). Finally, one of the most useful and simplest upgrades is the addition of LED lights into the viewing window of your oven so you can actually see whats going on inside. At about $90, unless you plan on constantly having a lamp by the window of the oven, you are going to want this one.

I don't have time to write any more, I'm getting told to go to the shop! I'll continue later today or tomorrow but if anyone else has anything they would like to add then please feel free.

If you are looking to buy a cheap vacuum oven from China, you should consider these points:

1) Is the seller the original manufacturer of the equipment? 95% of sellers on Alibaba claim to be, but in reality most are middle men. If you buy from the original manufacturer, you not only get the best price but also the best support. Some ways to tell middlemen from manufacturers is the level of knowledge of their representatives, the length of time it takes them to respond to technical questions, and also the amount of products they list. If they have a complete catalogue of scientific or medical equipment, then its likely they do not manufacture some/all of it. Its not only frustrating finding the same item for cheaper elsewhere, but in my case a middle man actually added a sticker of their logo to a hotplate that I ordered, so that when I turned it on after about 5 minutes the sticker burnt and I had to scrape the molten plastic off the side of the plate. If you are buying an oven from China, then it is likely one of your key motivations is to save money. Don't give money away to middlemen, do a bit more research and buy direct!

I'm going to publish more of these throughout the day so check back if this is of interest to you!
