What should you do if your dog or puppy is resource guarding? - The Confident K9 28/05/2024

๐Ÿ˜ฐ The primary reason for resource guarding is FEAR. This means that taking items away from your dog or scolding them for guarding is likely to make their behaviour worse in the long run.

โš ๏ธ Resource guarding occurs when a dog displays behaviours such as a fixed stare, head turn, slight baring of the teeth, growling, air snapping, lunging, or biting when they feel that a valuable resource in their possession is being threatened. The dog perceives that they are about to lose something they value and takes action to protect it.

This behaviour is sometimes known as โ€œpossessive aggression.โ€

Mouthing is normal behaviour for puppies and dogs. It is a way for them to explore the world around them. Puppies and dogs gently put their mouths around objects, including people's hands and feet.

This behaviour is a part of their natural development and plays a vital role in their communication, socialisation, and ability to play and explore their environment.. It's important to teach puppies bite inhibition and discourage excessive mouthing to ensure they grow up with appropriate behaviour around people and other animals.

Bite inhibition is a dog's ability to control the pressure when mouthing an object and is an important behaviour. This skill helps them interact with objects, food, and other animals in a gentle and controlled manner.

All dogs can learn bite inhibition.

If you are having trouble with your dog's biting behaviour, let's start a conversation about it on 07557 301161.

Do you know what to do with a Hol-ee Roller? It is ideal for destructive dogs or those who like to 'dis-embowl'. ๐Ÿ‘น๐Ÿพ

These are a great way to channel your destructo-dogs' natural instincts and keep your sanity intact!

Give them some interactive toys and puzzles that stimulate their senses and let them engage in activities like digging and foraging.

๐Ÿ’กHere's how to make the most of your Hol-ee Roller: roll a treat up in strips of felt, cardboard or fleece, then push these into the Holel-ee Roller. Depending on the size of the Hol-ee Roller and the material you use, you should be filling it with a minimum of ten rolls.

You can place the Hol-ee roller on the ground, let your dog squish, and play with it. Your dog will quickly learn to pull the rolled-up treats through the gaps individually, creating a similar behaviour to "disembowelling" without the mess.

By engaging your dog with the Hol-ee Roller, you are providing them with a fun activity while reducing their destructive tendencies on things you don't want them to destroy.

It's a win-win situation for both of you! ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿ•

Link to the Hol-ee Roller is below ๐Ÿ‘‡

Have you tried Scentwork? It's a fun and stimulating activity that can benefit your dog in many ways. Scentwork involves teaching your dog to use its natural sense of smell to locate specific scents. Look at Arthur here air scenting and how his nose is working to focus on scent particles carried by the wind.

Did you know that dogs have an incredible sense of smell? They have over 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to our measly 6 million! Here are some fun facts about dogs' sense of smell that you may not know:

- A dog's sense of smell is up to 100,000 times better than a human's.
- Dogs can detect odours up to one million times weaker than humans can smell.
- Some dog breeds, like Bloodhounds and Basset Hounds, have a better sense of smell than other breeds.
- Dogs can even use their sense of smell to detect changes in our bodies, like detecting low blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

So, if you're looking for a fun and rewarding activity with your dog, consider trying Scentwork. Not only will your dog love it, but it's also a great way to strengthen your bond and give it extra mental stimulation.

Contact The Confident K9 on 07557 301161 to learn more about Scentwork.

Discover the visionary who reshaped psychology! ๐Ÿง โœจ

B.F. Skinner, an American psychologist and social scientist, was one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century. He established the science of behaviourism, discovered the significance of positive reinforcement in education, invented the Skinner Box, and created the leading psychological experiments that produced predictable and quantitatively repeatable results.

In the 1930s, Skinner proposed the theory of operant conditioning, which suggests that behaviour change and learning occur as a result of punishment and reinforcement. Reinforcement strengthens a response by increasing the likelihood of repeated desired behaviour in the future.

By understanding more about behavior theory, you may now notice how reinforcement shapes our actions in both dogs and humans. Skinner's insights remain as relevant today as ever. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ’ก

When your puppy is biting, it's important to evaluate the possible triggers, determine whether it's play biting or something else, and consider whether the puppy is getting enough sleep for its age. Additionally, you should evaluate the routine, lifestyle, and enrichment of the puppy.

"Normal puppy biting" is a common behaviour among puppies, and it's important to understand that it's a natural part of their development. Puppies use their mouths to explore and gain feedback from the world around them. However, as caregivers, it can be difficult when they direct their biting at our hands and feet, especially with their sharp milk teeth.

It's important to teach your puppy that hands and feet are not toys to play with and to learn how to have a softer mouth.

When your puppy starts to feel playful, the best approach is to redirect their attention to a toy. One top tip is to anticipate their biting and offer the toy before they even initiate play.

This will help your puppy learn not to bite you for attention.

Sleep is crucial for puppies, who need up to 18-20 hours of sleep per day, while adult dogs need approximately 12-14 hours of sleep per day. If your puppy is biting more often, you should also review their sleeping habits.

๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿพ Meet Bo, the newest graduate of our dog training course. We couldnโ€™t be more proud of his progress - from a frustrated, over-exuberant pup to a calm, happy dog whoโ€™s now an absolute pleasure to walk.

Boโ€™s also learned not to jump up at people, which means his owners can now have guests visit their house again without any worry.

Itโ€™s always heartening to see our beloved dogs grow and learn, and weโ€™re thrilled to have played a part in Boโ€™s journey towards becoming a well-behaved and loving companion.

The best thing about Bo is that he is a people pleaser and absolutely loves training. His tail never stops wagging while he works through our exercises and he is such a quick learner. This dog is destined for greatness!

Congratulations, Bo - you did it! ย ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿพ

Did you know that scentwork can be a great activity for dogs?

Scentwork training not only provides mental stimulation and exercise for dogs but also helps them develop an increased ability to use their sense of smell. This can lead to improved concentration, increased confidence, and reduced anxiety.

Dogs can be taught to use their sense of smell to locate specific scents and find hidden objects, which is a great way to channel their natural behaviour.

Studies have also shown that scentwork can help to reduce stress levels in dogs, and can be a useful tool in managing behavioral issues. Overall, scentwork provides an effective and enjoyable way to keep dogs mentally and physically engaged, while also improving their overall well-being.

Give it a try and see the benefits for yourself! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ƒ For more information on scentwork sessions please call 07557 301161.

๐Ÿถโœจ Socialisation is not just for puppies ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿพ

Socialisation is the process through which a dog learns about the world around it.

The crucial socialisation period for a puppy is from approximately 8 to 12 weeks of age, but it could range from 3 to 16 weeks of age.

During this time, a puppy's experiences can impact its perception and response to a variety of people and situations as it grows.

Any new experience with an environment, person, animal or object is socialisation for dogs, not just limited to puppies.

Make sure your dogs experience different environments and scenarios as part of their training.

It's important to remember that adult dogs require socialisation just as much as puppies do.

We did it! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒŸ

Behind the scenes, Mako and I have been training rigorously for over a year for our first Protection Sports Association (PSA) trial. Our hard work paid off, and we successfully passed our protection dog certificate with flying colours (PDC) over the weekend.๐Ÿ†๐ŸŽ‰

The trial involved obedience, carjacking, a surprise attack, and a send-to-attack, all with gunfire. This achievement qualifies us to advance to the next level. We will now need to work even harder for our subsequent trial in the summer.

A big thanks to Joe Parks for flying in from Ohio, USA, to judge the trial. He provided much positivity and support and made the competitors, including me, feel at ease. Joe, you are a true treasure to the sport.

Training for PSA trials has improved my skills by pushing me outside my comfort zone and teaching me new techniques. It has also strengthened my bond with Mako, as we are constantly rising to new challenges as a team.

Well done, Mako, for your unrelenting work ethic and willingness to learn new skills. I love you to the moon and back.

Please message me if you're interested in competing in PSA or want to know more. But be careful, it's highly addictive.๐Ÿ˜‰

Once you have completed Loose Lead Walking Steps 1 and 2, now is the time to add in some distractions. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ซ

Building focus at this point is important to help your dog learn to enjoy walking with you and be able to resist distractions.

You can have someone help you by sitting on the grass nearby as you walk past. The aim of this is to set up distractions that would tempt your dog to look away but if they do, work out a way to regain their focus and heavily reward them for doing that. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ˜Š

You need to expose them to gradual distractions in order to teach them to ignore their biggest temptations ๐Ÿฅฉ๐Ÿƒ

Have fun with this exercise and gt really creative as there are so many things you can use as distractions. Can you get your dog to walk past a plate of food? What about a couple of your friends with their dogs sitting beside them? Or how about the kids waving a paper bag?๐Ÿ‘Œโœ‹

Build up your distractions gradually and remember to always set your dog up to succeed. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Teaching a dog ๐ŸŽฏdirectional control๐Ÿ‘‰ can be extremely useful. This means your dog can follow your instructions even when they are not close to you.

Here, we are practising the 'send away' around a hide/blind, which, when taught, can be extremely useful for moving a dog in the opposite direction to something you don't want it to see or simply as a training challenge.

Can your dog figure out what you are pointing at and complete the task of getting around it?

Turn the 'send away' into a recall powerhouse, rewarding speedy returns for a faster, fitter dog.

You can spice up your training routine and add many layers to this exercise as you progress. For example, can you send your dog away to a marker and down them at a distance? ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ• Or use this exercise to test how good your recall is with distractions nearby.

Reliable obedience takes dedication, but with patience and practice, itโ€™s within your dog's reach. Let's train smarter, not harder! ๐Ÿ‘

Dogs may exhibit subtle signs of stress, such as trembling, whining, excessive barking, panting, looking away or turning their head away from you, yawning, nose licking, paw lifting, eating f***s, and aggressive behaviour.

Stress levels in dogs can be assessed through behavior or physiological measures like blood biochemistry analysis, cell count, heart rate, and heart rate variability.

๐Ÿพ Discover the Path to Your Pup's Happiness with Canine Enrichment! ๐Ÿ•โœจ

As a devoted dog parent, you understand that your dogโ€™s well-being is about more than just food and exercise. Canine enrichment plays a crucial role in ensuring your pup leads a fulfilled and joyful life. Today, let's dive into the world of canine enrichment and uncover how it benefits our beloved pets!

๐Ÿง  Why Canine Enrichment Matters:
Canine enrichment is vital as it provides both mental and physical stimulation for dogs. Engaging activities prevent boredom, reduce stress, and can curb unwanted behaviours caused by excess energy or anxiety. It encourages them to use their natural instincts, keeping their minds sharp and bodies fit.

๐Ÿฆท Puppy Teeth & Texture Training:
Puppies explore the world with their mouths, leading them to chew on just about anything during teething phases. Alternate between hard and soft items to satisfy their chewing urges without sacrificing your favourite shoes.
By providing appropriate items for chewing, you not only protect your household items but also contribute to their canine enrichment.

๐ŸŽพ Examples of Canine Enrichment Activities:
1. Puzzle Feeders: Turn mealtime into brain time with feeders that challenge your dog to think.
2. Scent Work: Hide treats around the house or yard and let your dog's nose lead the way.
3. Obedience Training: Stimulate their mind while strengthening your bond.
4. Agility Courses: Set up an obstacle course for physical exercise and mental engagement (make sure it is appropriate for your dog's age).
5. New Toys: Rotate toys to keep things fresh and exciting.
6. Playdates: Social interaction with other dogs is fantastic for behavioural development.
7. Interactive toys that engage their problem-solving skills.
8. Training sessions that exercise their mind while improving obedience.

๐Ÿ’ก Creating Happy Dogs:
The goal of canine enrichment is simple โ€“ happiness! When dogs are mentally stimulated and physically active, they're less likely to develop destructive habits out of boredom or frustration. By incorporating these enriching activities into their routine, you're setting them up for a contented life full of discovery and joy.

Let us know how you incorporate these practices into your daily routine! Share your success stories using and inspire fellow dog lovers on this journey toward creating an enriching environment for our beloved pets.

๐Ÿ’P.S Tank has a condition known as cherry eye. Cherry eye occurs after the tear gland which is located in this third eyelid, and normally cannot be seen, becomes inflamed and pops out (prolapses) of its normal position. The name of this condition comes from the swollen and protruding third eyelid resembling a cherry pit.

Cherry eye may be painless and non-harmful to your dog, but can also cause irritation and dry eye so it is important to visit your veterinarian.

Cherry eye is usually cured with surgery. In over 90% of cases, the pr*****ed gland is returned into the correct position and stitched in place so it cannot pop out again.

๐Ÿงฐ๐ŸฉบTank is under the care of a specialist eye veterinarian in Hereford. His treatment is ongoing.
