Here's brief run down of the almond harvest before we head home. Like the olives, almonds have many similarties to coffee in terms of how they are farmed. There are mechanical ways of picking almonds but we only have about 400 almond trees here so we did these manually much like the olives, with nets. We did these with a team of 6 of us (plus Marco!) over about 3 days in temps between 30-35 C.

1) Nets are laid around the base of the trees.

2) Branches are tapped with sticks to make the ripe almonds fall.

3) Nets ate then collected in,

4) And almonds bagged up, or

5) Loaded into trailer depending on where we had the "de pulping" machine.

6) The almonds are loaded into the "de pulper" (SMALLATRICE in Italian) which takes them out of thier protective casing and leaves them in the hard shell we are all familiar with. It is important this process is done as soon as possible after picking, if the picked almonds stay in the bags for too long before this process they can start to ferment which isn't a desirable process for almonds!

7) The soft outer shell by-product is then loaded into the trailer and used on the land elsewhere as an organic furtilizer. Here we spread it around some of the olive trees.

8) The almonds are then laid out to dry further before going off to market.

9) Of course the best part is opening a few to try, which of course requires precision and dedication, as Marco is demonstrating!

Whilst this is a bit of fun for us to keep some family traditions alive, it does highlight the effort needed to farm anything, where ever you are in the world!
