We’re proud to support the BrightBites oral health education programme, in collaboration with Dentaid The Dental Charity, to help teach children the importance of taking care of their oral health, and provide them with a free toothbrush and tooth paste. 🦷🪥

So far this year, BrightBites has reached 16,711 children across 175 schools, thanks to the efforts of 167 volunteers who have given up their time to deliver sessions. These volunteers have included some of our own colleagues, pictured here is our CEO Paul Schreier who delivered a BrightBites session today, and our Chief Technology Officer Tim Gough with our Corporate Finance Director David Warren who recently delivered a session.

So far this year our Brightbites education programme, in partnership with Dentaid The Dental Charity, has taught 11,578 children about the importance of oral health, giving them practical tips and providing each child with a toothbrush. 123 schools have been visited by Brightbites volunteers, and we have 208 volunteers registered. On Friday, some of our intrepid members and colleagues walked an epic 26 miles from Old Sarum in Salisbury to Stonehenge. At a crucial time for the oral health of our nation and the dental profession, we welcome Sir Kier Starmer and The Labour Party to government.

We've been encouraged to see Labour's ambition to improve access to dentistry, and proposed reforms to the dental contract, with a shift to focusing on prevention and the retention of NHS dentists. They also pledged to introduce a supervised tooth-brushing scheme for 3- to 5-year-olds, targeting the areas of highest need.

We will continue to encourage the new government to recognise the role private and mixed dental practices can play in providing access which has never been more crucial given the dental crisis facing our country.

That’s why we’re asking the new government to secure the future of dentistry; By providing a deadline for the consultation on further reforms to the dental contract, acknowledging the vital role played by dental nurses and the wider dental team and providing further guidance on how training pathways can help support use of the whole dental team. We’re also asking the new government to lead a public health campaign on the importance of oral health and its connection to overall health.

At Denplan, we are proud to be the representative voice for our 6,700 member dentists, leading the conversation around the vital role of mixed and private practice in ensuring accessible dental care.

Over the last six months, we have engaged with MPs from all parties to advocate for policies that will have a tangible impact on the daily lives of both our members and patients. Although some of these meetings have been postponed until after the election, we look forward to collaborating with the incoming cohort of parliamentarians, equipping them with the resources needed to drive policies that secure a sustainable dental landscape in the UK.

Our Clinical Director Catherine Rutland delivered a BrightBites oral health education session to three groups of year 3, 4, 5 and 6 children at Amesbury CE Primary School on Monday. The sessions had great engagement and questions, reinforcing why it’s vital to share the important messages on toothbrushing and diet to such enthusiastic audiences. This time last week, a group of Denplan members along with some of our colleagues, had just completed a sunrise hike up Snowdon. Starting at 1am, the group walked for six hours to make it to the summit in time to catch the sunrise, before descending back down for breakfast and taking in the stunning views on the way.

Here’s what Sarah from St Francis Dental Practice had to say about the event: “Thank you so much for all your hard work organising the Snowdon Sunrise Hike. It was another fantastically well organised event from the Denplan Events Team. A special thanks must go to the mountain guides who were so kind supporting us all of the way.

“Our dental nurse had the brilliant idea of fundraising for a local hospice which encouraged 7 of us to sign up for the hike. As many of the team had never been in the mountains before, this event was a real challenge, not only being in the mountains, but also hiking up in the dark.

“Being together as a team was the most enjoyable aspect of the event, encouraging each other in the lead up to the day then sharing the experience together. We are all keen to do another event together and get the rest of our practice to join us.

“Back at the practice, it has been lovely sharing our experience with our patients who have been very supportive, not only asking about our training and passing on their own tales of Snowdon, but also sponsoring us to raise over £1300 so far.

“We are all still buzzing a week later after completing the event.”

We’re working to ensure that policymakers don’t overlook the role that mixed practices play within the dental sector. Most UK dental practices, and the majority of our 6,700 Denplan member practices, operate under a mixed dental practice model, combining a mix of private paying patients with some NHS patients. Private and mixed dentistry plays an important role in helping ensure the good oral and general health of the entire population and supports access to NHS services. With a General Election just around the corner, we’re calling on the next Government to..

1. Provide a deadline for the consultation on further reforms to the dental contract, in line with the commitment made in the Dental Recovery Plan.

2. Acknowledge the vital role played by dental nurses and the wider dental team and provide further guidance on how training pathways can help support use of the whole dental team.

3. Provide guidance on how they will assess whether plans to improve access to dental services are reaching those who are most vulnerable in society.

4. Lead a public health campaign designed to communicate the importance of oral health in connection to overall health.

In 2023 we helped 1,463,000 patients access dental care and continued to provide dentists and their patients with products and services supporting the provision and funding of dental services.
We also enhanced our customers’ experience by introducing AI to support our customer service team – resulting in shorter waiting times for our customers and 24/7 support. Our commitment to customer excellence was demonstrated in 2023 with our 4.1 Trustpilot rating for Denplan.
