Tummy time is a homework always given out to our baby patients. Surviving it as a parent can often be difficult and tricky and you may even wonder what the point of it is in the first place.

In a nut shell, babies need tummy time for muscle development. Important milestones such as supporting their own head, sitting up, rolling, crawling and walking are all supported by your baby engaging with time spent on their tummy. It is also important to aid the formation of the “C” curvature of the bones of their neck and also means they are spending less time on their back, with weight on the back of their skull (which can cause flattening).

We recommend that newborns start with 10 minutes a day, increasing that period by one minute every week.

A common misconception is that babies need to endure the full 10+ minutes in one stint, which can be distressing and almost impossible for a lot of babies. This is not the case. You can do tummy time for little short intervals throughout the day, just totalling the above number. This could be done for example for a minute or so after every nappy change.

Tummy time needs to be fun! Make sure you are in their view for reassurance, incorporating toys or colourful objects to keep them focused as they grow older. Do TT when your baby is most happy in the day and avoid tummy time immediately after them eating. Flatter, firmer surfaces are easier for your baby to push up.

If your baby doesn’t seem happy with tummy time or you feel that something is not quite right, there maybe a reason for their discomfort. Chiropractic care may help in this situation, and we would love to help you.

Thank you Cruz for demonstrating this one! And thank you to Cruz’s mum for giving us the consent to use this photo in order to educate others.

K I N D H E A L T H I S 2!

As we know full well from the covid pandemic, a lot can happen in 2 years. If someone had told us two years ago that we would be welcoming 450 patients through our doors we wouldn’t have believed it and we hope that we have positively impacted each of those patients in some way.

The truth is, we feel incredibly blessed to help you.

There are many amazing Chiropractors in the UK, especially here in Bournemouth, and we feel deeply honoured that you have chosen us to look after you and your families with the kindness of Chiropractic.

A year on from our last post, we can still proudly say that almost 100% of our new patients come from word of mouth or referrals from our current patients and that means that this all comes down to you.

So thank you with our whole hearts.

Our promise for the next year is to continue to help you be kinder to your body, to continue to donate a percentage of our profits to a charity chosen by you, to listen to your feedback, to squeeze you in whenever we can, help you laugh on a rainy day and ultimately provide you and your family with the best quality Chiropractic care.

Happy Birthday Kind Health!

S L E E P

We spend a third of our lives asleep. It’s as vital to our survival as food and water. Recent research suggests that sleep could be the best anti-inflammatory, and that driving after one night of sleep deprivation is as dangerous as driving over the alcohol limit.

Why do we need sleep?

Sleep both saves and optimises energy. It strengthens memory, maintains neural networks, strengthens immunity and removes metabolic waste.

For all of the reasons above, achieving a good nights kip is understandably very important, especially for those in pain as we see here at Kind Health. Improving our routine around bed time, or improving our “sleep hygiene”, can be achieved by reviewing the following factors:

- Exercise during the day. The emphasis here is actually the regularity of exercise, as opposed to the type.
- Achieving an hour of “wind down” before bed
- Having the optimal bedroom temperature of 16-18 degrees
- Setting regular hours for bed time and waking up
- Avoid screen time and hour before bed, particularly stimulating screen time (the 10pm news is the arch nemesis here)
- Getting your exposure to natural light in the morning
- Dimming lights on the lead up to bed time
- Do not work too close to bed time. (If working in your room is unavoidable, try changing the colour of duvet from light during the day to dark at night, or changing the position of your bed or desk at night so your brain can differentiate)
- Write worries down before bed
- Do not have any forms of caffeine past 2pm

What To Expect At Your Initial Consultation

Whether you have been to a Chiropractor previously or not, as a new patient to the clinic it is a necessity for us to spend the hour getting to know you and your problem during an initial consultation.

We are a firm believer that time is the most valuable gift that you can give to someone. It also gives our patients the opportunity to talk and explain as much as they want to without feeling rushed.

During this first appointment, we’ll start by asking you a few questions. As well as getting to know a bit about the issue that you have come in with, we will also want to know a little more about you. Lifestyle and past medical history are all important clues to paint a broader picture.

We’ll then do a few important screening checks, such as blood pressure. We’ll do a detailed postural analysis. We’ll test the way that you move and your limitations. We’ll test your nervous system and do some specific orthopaedic testing for the area which is causing you an issue.

We will then present you with a detailed explanation about your problem and outline our suggested treatment plan for you.

It is important to note that the above format is a little different for our paediatric and pregnant patients.

If you have any questions about the initial consultation, Chiropractic care in general or if you would like to make a booking, please do not to drop us a message.

Not all heroes wear capes..

Our patient Kevin completed London Marathon on Sunday, despite so many difficult hurdles this past year and on the day. We found his story so inspirational that we asked to share it with you, with the take home message of “never give up”.

“ Sunday was the end of a rollercoaster ride for me – a marathon that should have taken place in April 2020, ended up happening on Sunday Oct 3 2021. A lot has happened to me personally and globally since I got my marathon place confirmed 2 years ago.. however, I never stopped believing, and starting from scratch via the Couch to 5K app, I was determined to get to that start line. That was a huge motivation for me all along in my recovery. I have had to adapt to cope with reduced lung capacity so running the full distance was not going to happen, so had trained on a run/walk, walk/run, walk/hobble tactic for Sunday.

Ultimately I was participating in memory of my Dad, for Prostate Cancer Research.

I was ready to go on Sunday, and in sunshine started as per plan. At about 3 miles I noticed my right calf was tightening, at 5.5 miles it got so bad I couldn’t put any more running weight on it for fear it would tear. I tried walking on it but was limping. I was upset at this point but I kept plodding on. The atmosphere around Cutty Sark was unbelievable, it was that, and everything the race meant to me made me more determined than ever. So, I basically walked as fast as could for 20 more miles non stop with amazing crowd support and messages from many of you to get to the finish line. In the end it took me 7 hours 48 mins and I have raised £5000.

P.S. My back however held up perfectly, thank you! “

WELL DONE KEVIN!

Chiropractic is a natural way of not only treating your symptoms, but also addressing the root cause.

Using a range of techniques and analysis methods, your chiropractor will look at how your body is functioning as a whole in order to address why your symptoms occur in the first place.

At Kind Health, patient well-being is our number one priority.

We will continue to ask patients to wear a face covering for their appointments unless otherwise exempt.

If you do not have one, one will be provided for you at the clinic.

Despite the restrictions being lifted on Monday, we would like to reassure patients that we will also still be wearing PPE until guided otherwise by our governing body.

We are monitoring the situation closely so that we can act appropriately and in good time. Thank you for your co-operation.

R E F L E C T I O N

This past year has been so challenging to us. As human beings we aren’t designed to adapt to so many quick changes, extended solidarity or loss of freedom.

It is so important however, as we return to “normality”, to reflect on this past year and learn from it. We invite you to write down your feelings of gratitude about what the last year taught you. Here are a few messages we have learnt:

- The first lockdown forced us to have one walk a day. We took this time out to be present and look at the world around us in stillness. How many of us now still keep to this one activity a day? Whether it is walking, running, cycling or gymming, keeping our body moving throughout the day is imperative to good health and mental well being.
- Restaurant closures meant that we had to cook more meals at home. How regularly do you still cook home cooked and nutritious food from scratch?
- We were forced to communicate more with our loved ones to check in and see if they were okay. This is such an important practise to maintain. New mental health statistics since Covid are staggering and on the rise. Now more than ever it’s important to check in with those that we love.
- We had the gift of time. How many of us are now making up for lost time? It’s crucial that we learn to take time out for ourselves, before our old western lifestyle consumes us once more.

At Kind Health we believe it’s imperative to look after the home which we call our bodies and to be kind to it as it serves us. We are grateful for the lessons this past year has taught us and we aspire to keep the above practises going as we transition back into the real world.

What have you learnt?

YOUR AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

Our nervous system is your brain’s way of communicating with the environment. It allows us to breath, move and most importantly adapt. It leaves the brain as the spinal cord and travels through the vertebrae of our spine and then exits the spine as nerves.

The nervous system can be devided into two sections, your voluntary and your involuntary nervous system.

Your involuntary, or autonomic nervous system can be subdivided into two sections:
Your SYMPATHETIC nervous system, which is commonly known as your “flight or fight” is how our body responds to stress and danger. Unfortunately though your body doesn’t understand the difference between anxiety and running away from a tiger and it can leave our minds cluttered and unable to concentrate. Your heart rate quickens to accomadate this state of shock and stress.
Your PARASYMPATHETIC nervous system helps you to rest and digest. The heart rate decreases and we are able to heal.

As Chiropractors are ethos and purpose of treatment is built around the nervous system to ensure that you and your body are functioning optimally. Good brain to body communication contributes to good health.
