At aged 6 'they' told me to stop crawling around on the floor because no one was gong to help me up. I was told in no uncertain terms that the only person who would, or who could help me through life was myself. Never was a truer word said to me. And the same still applies now at aged 72. The day I give up trying will be my last.
‘They told me I wouldn’t live past 30’ Key takeaways:The disease is nearly eradicated today, but polio is a part of health care history across the world. The polio virus invades the nervous system and can cause serious symptoms including paralysis. Long term impacts are also possible.Decades ago, treatment like an iron lung was common for...

It's not just 'Physical Pain' in my case there is also a great deal of 'Frustration' which often makes me 'Short Tempered' and even 'Angry' on occasion. And I frequently now ask myself, why do I bother to try any more !!

I took part in this study on Tuesday and would recommend anyone with a serious Disability such as Polio and / or Post Polio Syndrome, as well as 'Long Covid', which is akin in many ways to Post Polio Syndrome, to take part in this important survey because the results will hopefully get to the Minister of Health in due course and then be brought to the attention of the UK government.
We are now recruiting for our new study! We are testing a questionnaire for people living with a long-term condition. If you are interested, look below for more details and how to get involved!

I contracted Polio as a child in 1957 and have always received good treatment throughout the NHS, including when, and after, being told that I likely have PPS as well. Even though there is no definite diagnosis for PPS and no one really knows what it is exactly. I accept that there is very little any Doctor or Medical Expert can do to help with PPS, other than to advise you to try not to overuse the muscles you have left. Hence, my visits to my GP or any Consultant are not usually about Polio or PPS, because there is little point in discussing this with them because firstly, few know anything much about Polio and or PPS, and secondly which is more to the point they cannot do anything to help much with either of the conditions, which we all know anyway. The only person that can help us with the burden of Polio / PPS is ourselves, and we have to self manage and live with these debilitating conditions as best we can, however difficult this may be. And, I for one, am fully resigned to this despite it getting me down, big time, on occasion, especially during cold weather. And for the record I do not either take, or believe in taking, any strong / addictive painkillers, sedatives or anti-depressants, however much pain I may be in, or however bad I feel, full stop.
