Eggucation
Eggucation is a truly ETHICAL hatching service for schools, nurseries, care homes and events.
I can’t believe this was a year ago! ❤️
Such a treat to have Missy the hen out with us today The last time she accompanied us at an event was Great Yorkshire Show in 2021, where a photo of her on my head with Camilla made the headlines in the national press and in media around the world! Such fun to recreate the photo with Mags from Creature Ark!
We have eggs hatching live at the event, chicks of varying ages and all our amazing science of eggs!
This Monday gone (18th March) saw Dani and I doing our last egg deliveries prior to the Easter break.
Between us we have put eggs and incubators into 85 schools up and down the country. That’s a whole lot of EGGucating 🐣🐥🐣
And I intended doing a post trying to work out how many children will have learned so many wonderful things about lifecycles, science, nature, maths, caring & responsibilities, farming and food amongst other things… and even if we say only 30 children in each school had that experience…that’s still over 2500 young people. And of course it’s never just one class who experiences that joy of these little chicks
And then I saw this post. ❤️
Of course it’s very much not only the pupils then love having the chicks. I’ve lost count of the number of times staff tell me it’s their favourite time of year when the chicks arrive. Why wouldn’t it be? Not only do the staff get to enjoy their personal interactions with the chicks, but they know full well that their classes will be super engaged (and often super quiet 🤫 😂) during the whole eggsperince
I’m so glad Meadowhead School and Sixth Form posted these photos of staff enjoying the chicks.
It fills my heart to know how much pure joy accompanies the learning these projects bring.❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic work by the STEM club Meadowhead School and Sixth Form They collected data on weight loss in the eggs during incubation. Eggs need to lose approx 13% of their mass through water evaporation during incubation. The shells are porous, and the humidity in the incubator will affect speed of water loss. So to make sure their machine had the right amount of water in they weighed the eggs weekly and calculated loss. This is pretty high level for Y7, and they have clearly risen to the challenge - as evidenced with this fabulous hatch rate!
Every year we work with Eggucation as part of Y7 science club. 7 eggs were delivered to us and have been in an incubator for the last 3 weeks. Participants from science club have been weighing them each week and tracking their development on a graph. We will be able to handle the chicks after 24 hours and will continue to observe them and weigh them to see how they develop in their first 10 days of life! They get collected next Friday and go back to live on the farm.5 chicks have hatched so far, with another 2 eggs still to hatch!
Come and find us at this fantastic fun filled family event! As ever we will have chicks hatching live at the event
AND stop the press….
This time Missy the hen plus some other special guest will be with us! Get a photo with her on your head (just like the Queen!)

Feedback from our school clients means the world. We know from our day to day conversations, how much they value the experience that their hatching project brings to the classroom. The engagement and learning opportunity are VAST (don’t get me started we will be here all day 🤷🏼♀️😂) and the staff know they are using a genuinely ethical and passionate service. Today I have been sorting out the instruction folders we leave in schools. At the back is a feedback form. Somehow I must have missed this one.
Just how lovely. ❤️❤️❤️
CANDLING!
Just did a quick check of these beauties and only took 2 infertile eggs out. So for the time of year that’s amazing. And tbf what I need and expect. It doesn’t happen by accident! Giving the birds the best possible conditions and welfare means they are laying well and the boys are filling eggs
100% fertility for the Andalusian, Vorwerk and welbar.
Awesome.
First eggs going in the machine tomorrow that will be hatching in schools! Eeek!
No spare hatching eggs now until 29th Feb until 12th March (just a couple of weeks worth really) but if you would like something specific please get in touch and I’ll put you in my diary!
Not sure how many of you follow the farm page but Eggucation HQ is my teeny farm so head over there and see what happens 365 days a year!
One of the things we are most proud of here is our commitment to not only the health and welfare of our birds, but our conservation and environmental efforts.
Both branches are based on small farms, run by women, with regenerative practices at their core! Rare breed poultry and sheep kept in ways that are not only sustainable, but work in ways to regenerative the soil, biodiversity and capture carbon!
If you would like to follow Debs from HQ on her daily farming adventures, and see the farm where your eggs will be laid, head over to Hunshelf Heritage Breeds or follow her on instagrams rare_breed_farmer
And for a fantastic educational insight into the world of poultry, sheep AND ALPACAs (soo cute) head over to Oriontree Alpacas & Poultry and enjoy seeing the work Dani does in the background behind your hatching experience!
Enjoy this photo of some beautiful lambs born April 2023 at HQ 😍😍😍
The 2024 🐥🐣 hatching season is approaching rapidly! Breeding pens are set up for both Dani over in Retford and Debs at Eggucation HQ on top of a windy hill just north of Sheffield!
🐣🐣EDIT…. Deb’s (PINK areas) is now fully booked for spring 2 (feb half term to Easter) apart from some quick hatch slots on MONDAY 18th March in the Manchester or Bolton area! 🐣🐣
🐣The Feb half term to Easter term is hugely busy and Debs (pink areas) are fully booked on some key dates now.
🐥New for 2024 is a fantastic bank of videos of life and livestock on both farms. You can see not only the beautiful rare breed birds that laid your classroom eggs, but where you chicks will live when they come home. Also our amazing rare breed sheep and pigs, as well as learning about alpacas!

🐥All the chicks remain in our ownership and are collected to be raised on our small farms at the end of your experience

Well what an amazing time we had at Great Yorkshire Show last week! Our tent was full all day every day with wonderful ‘ooooooh’ moments but none as fabulously timed as this one!
From the delighted smiles as people walked in and saw the chicks, to the children who were jaw dropped at the sight of a chick hatching!
It’s great to be back at the farm tending to the birds and planning next years show already!
I’ve had a flurry of emails from clients about booking on their hatching for spring 2024! I have started blocking out the diaries for our different areas so please do get in touch asap to book a slot especially for spring 2 as these dates will go FAST!
Just ring Debs on 07581 161233 to find out who covers your area and get booked on!
Another super set up for another super school!
Eggucation provided Ascot Racecourse with a different kind of race on Sunday, at their Spring Family Raceday. Throughout the day, we had a number of races between chicks hatching in each incubator. In total, 62 chicks hatched between 3am and midnight. What a day!
Thank you team Ascot for having us!
All set up showground today. The tickets are all sold out but looking forward to a day of Eggucation. Loving the new display of eggs and the rare breeds of poultry that we keep!
Some fabulous chicks hatched at one of my oldest clients. ❤️
It’s been tough not sharing this amazing news with you all over the last two weeks! The amazing news that had won arrived the day before snowmageddon, so it was a welcome lift to help me ride that storm. I’m so grateful to everyone who took the time to vote, plus a huge debt of thanks to all my clients. Teachers, parents and students…all humbling me with the overwhelming support for the difference the hatching makes to the engagement and learning of everyone involved. Thank you all so much. 🙏🏼❤️🐣

What amazing footage ❤️
Eggs going into the incubator today for our first event of the year in
Come along and watch these eggs into beautiful just like these!
Rhodebar bantams ❤️
I’ve collected a beautiful bunch of chicks from a beautiful bunch of Eggucation schools today. One of the questions I often get asked when I’m doing the zoom tour with the classes, is what my favourite breed is. I struggle with that cos they all have a special place here. But today I’ve realised that the Rhodebar bantams are right up there.
An Autos*xing breed, which means you can s*x the chicks at day old. Not quite as clear as come of the other breeds for sure, but I can s*x mine 100% as I know them so well. The male is less orange and the female has a few darker bits of down on her head.
I hatched ONE pullet here last year. No eggs went into schooos as they just were not fertile and not hatching well. I nearly gave up on them as ideally I like birds on site that can earn their keep a little. But they are So Very Rare that I just couldn’t. And as chairperson of the Autos*xing Breeds Association I can’t neglect my duty! Plus they are such nice friendly birds, frugal, laying a pale pink egg.
So I moved them to a new pen. Gave them some extra vitamins. Paid attention.
And now they are out in all the schools. Fertile. And hatching well.
Never give up on things you believe in….❤️
Just 5 days left to vote for us in the Britains Best Small Business Name!

Phwarrrrrr
This makes me so happy for so many reasons.
Tomorrow will be a long day of doing what I love so I am reluctant to call it work….
But…how satisfying is this?
Maybe just me 🤷🏼♀️😂
Eggs laid by my beautiful hens
Todays photo courtesy of a few years back. Hannah cheated by wearing a wide brimmed hat in case of emergencies, but let’s face it with hair that good why would you risk it 🤷🏼♀️💩😂
My teeny company provides ethical schools hatching projects which have huge educational benefits as well as conserving the rare native poultry I am so passionate about.

So Burt, the new mobile got some livery done by the incredibly helpful and local
Next week we will be delivering 21 machines. The week after 24. 😱💪🏻
Time for head down…🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣
And so it begins. First big hatch of the 2023 season is prepped to go in the incubation later.
I could do with the girls laying a little better but with some brain bending logistics I think we will manage. 🤯😄
This little lot will add up to a huge number of small humans engaging with nature and farming by watching the miracle that is hatching. I absolutely know this connects their lives with food and farming in so many genuinely meaningful ways. Add in the conservation of rare breeds and the how they can be part of a healthy regenerative farming system….and I’m the happiest farmer ever.
It’s my passion.
My fascination for animal behaviour will never fade. Just watching them doing their thing. And the innate behaviours of these tiny new chicks, fresh out of the incubator this evening and immediately sussing drinking, eating and where to keep warm.
It floats my boat big time!
My MSc I did, many many moons go, was applied animal behaviour and animal welfare. Notice one to safeguard the other. That’s been kinda my life’s work even before farming.
and are my ‘on the ground’ expression of this belief.
