We’ve had another two fantastic result this half-term with merits for two lovely young ladies in grade 2 singing and grade 5 piano. I’ve known these girls since they were very young (one 2 and one 4) and to say I’m proud of them is an understatement. Not just for the results but for seeing the wonderful people they are. It’s such a privilege to see the little ones grow up and to have a part of their journey

This was such a fun lesson working on a very important skill in musicianship: keeping a pulse (i.e. keeping a steady beat as you play). It is often the case that accuracy goes up against pulse in a war over who is going to win out! 😂 In this clip we are working on a very simple set of notes, just using triads, and the aim is to keep pulse when the notes are easy to follow. With that confidence, we take it over into a piece and use small sections of that piece working on pulse. We can revert back to this exercise as many times as we need to. I love the fact that you can see her progress in this video where the accuracy of notes meets the steady pulse, clever girl! 🎹🎵🥰

I have a blog for you! This one is all about my keyring flashcards that, just this week, have been bought by a music shop to sell in their store! I have been using these with my own students in lessons as a tangible way of learning or reinforcing music theory topics such as the names of notes, key signatures and Performance Directions. They attach to school bags (or even parents bags!) and many of my students have now bought their own and use them while in the car, waiting for clubs or even out for lunch. I love the fact that it's not using a screen so no need for WIFI, signal or even phone battery (if your phone is anything like mine this is an absolute blessing!)
I hope you enjoy the blog x

Feed The Birds - piano solo 27/05/2024

I was so sad to hear of the passing of Richard Sherman, who produced so many songs that we know and love. Here is a version of ‘Feed the Birds’, composed by Richard and his brother, Robert

Well done to my little SATS students, you did it!! Now enjoy your Friday and relax at the weekend 🥰🥰👍🏼😀

12/05/2024

Gosh, I really feel for some of my students at the moment. Some are doing SATS, others GCSE’s, some A-levels and all are feeling the strain. I have faith in every single one of them. I always say to all my students who are going through something, you cannot do better than your best. It is impossible. So do what you can to the best that you can on that day, and give yourself grace once it’s done. I can’t wait to hear when they get their amazing results, whatever they are 👏🏼🥳

Such a lovely day of teaching today. The sunshine makes everything brighter, both literally and metaphorically. A few students had confessed finding motivation tricky recently, in all areas of their lives and not just with practising. But today there was a huge turnaround. Students were all smiley and played some really brilliant stuff. It just goes to show that, being human, not all practices will be equal, not all performances will be either. Life happens and it is important to give yourself some grace. But KEEP GOING! Brighter is always on the horizon. This little flower depicts the mood in the JLA Music studio today 🎹🥰☀️

Do you have a child who plays an instrument? Is it sometimes (or often 😜) a struggle to get them to practice during the half-term holidays? If so, have a look at my advice on how to get them motivated. You can even download free printables so that they can ‘wow’ their teacher in their next lesson. Is a Christmas film for you? I always think it is. I used to LOVE the series (both books and films), but the John Williams film score is really special. If you or someone in your family would like to learn to play the theme song to Harry Potter, check out this guided series which teaches you hands together:
