The British Horse Society’s judicial review of Cornwall Council’s decision to refuse to register one of its definitive map modification order applications, has been successful.

Cornwall Council has accepted that the application was made in accordance with the provisions of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and that it will now proceed to register the application.

The Council has also confirmed that it will now work through another 64 of the Society’s applications that it was also refusing to register. 🧑🏻‍🤝‍👩🏼

The Council has agreed to pay the Society £13K towards its legal costs.

The Society is very grateful for the support of The Open Spaces Society and The Ramblers in bringing this action.

Mark Weston, Director of Access, said “The Society will not hesitate to resort to litigation when local authorities refuse to comply with their statutory duties in respect of bridleways and byways to the detriment of equestrians. Equestrians desperately need safe places to ride and carriage driving. In 2023 3,383 road incidents involving horses were recorded by the British Horse Society. 66 horses died and 86 were injured. 3 people died and 94 were injured.”

Will Steel, Head of Access, said ”The Society’s Project 2026 will continue to research and submit applications so that such routes as these are not extinguished come 2031. To date Project 2026 has seen 3346 applications have been registered.”

The British Horse Society is here to promote and secure the provision, protection and preservation of rights of way and of access for ridden and driven horses over public roads, highways, footpaths, bridleways, carriageways, public paths and other land.

Last year, 85% of the incidents recorded via our Horse i app occurred because a vehicle passed by too closely or quickly.

We want to change this by informing and involving road users on how to pass our horses safely.

Having held a successful BHS Ride Safe Training day and assessment a while ago, if there is enough interest we would like to hold another at Poldice Valley Equine and Events Arena .

WHAT IS RIDE SAFE?
The British Horse Society offers this training and award to anyone who rides. To educate riders in how to keep themselves, their horses and other road users safe.

There are different levels. BRONZE for young children and less experienced riders and SILVER for over 12s.
It is open to anyone.

The SILVER is essential for anyone who is thinking of having a career with horses and studying on the BHS career pathway.
For example if you are planning on studying at Duchy College you are not allowed to hack out unless you hold a minimum if SILVER RIDE SAFE AWARD.

If you already hold the SILVER AWARD you can go on and do the GOLD and PLATINUM.

Riders always complain about other road users ......let's make sure riders are educated and doing their bit to make the roads a safer place.

We need a minimum number to run this day .
Clubs welcome .
Please message if you are interested and then a date will be allocated along with costings.

To know that something is wrong with your horse, you first must know what they're like when healthy - their behaviours, appearance, eating habits etc... and their temperature! 🌡️

Spotting a raised temperature is much easier when you know what your horse's temperature is normally. Taking their temperature daily could be crucial in spotting a fever early! 🐴

If your horse has a high temperature, it could be a sign of strangles or another disease. It's best to contact your vet ASAP and keep your horse isolated. ❤️

Are you a horse rider or carriage driver? We’re working British Horse Society and Toll Rides Off-road Trust to review the way we provide horse riding access in the nation’s forests and we want to hear from you.

Forestry England supports riding access and fully recognises the importance of safe off-road access in addition to public bridleways and byways. We’re asking the equestrian community to share the ways you use Forestry England woodlands and forests for hacking. Our survey also asks for your views about horse riding permit systems that are used in some parts of the country to manage access to sensitive woodlands. The intention of this review is not to create more permits, but your views will help us review whether existing systems are fit-for-purpose and fair.

Our public consultation is open until 9 April – please complete and share the survey

We never like to say goodbye to our volunteers, but after 30+ years in the saddle (so to speak), some friends old and new gathered for lunch to wish Jo Batty-Smith a happy retirement as she stepped down from her volunteering duties with the BHS in Cornwall.

We thank Jo for all of the time she has given to the BHS in Cornwall and wish her a long and happy retirement.
