With the weather heating up this week, our equine specialist Kevin Mercer, based in Harbro Hawick, has some important advice for looking after your horse 🌞

Application of Suncream and Flyspray
🐴 Ensure that any pink areas on your horse, especially around the head and heel areas, are protected from the sun

🐴 Various products are available to protect your horse from the sun and flies but as with any new product, please test on a small area first to ensure there's no adverse reaction. Always fully read the instructions on products (even if you've used it before) to check application rates

🐴 Fly rugs and masks are also available should you have a really big issue with flies causing distress to your horse. Regular poo-picking in the field can also help reduce the attraction of flies to the area

🐴 Try where possible to exercise early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the warmest points of the day. Ensure after working that the horse is cooled down, ideally hosed or sponged down to remove sweat

🐴 Similar to the above, if you have to travel your horse, try to do this in the coolest part of the day, providing as much ventilation as possible. Ensure your horse is well-rested and hydrated before and provide fresh water on arrival

July is MSD's Lameness Month and we have some advice from our Harbro Earlston store manager, Robert Anderson 🐑

"Prevention is the best way to control the possibility of lameness in sheep. One way is to follow the Lameness Reduction 5 Point Plan.
1) Vaccinate to build and establish immunity,
2) Cull persistent offenders to build flock resistance,
3) Quarantine lame sheep to reduce spreading infection,
4) Treat cases as soon as they appear
5) Avoid infection spreading when handling or gathering

All of these will reduce the disease challenge and will save a lot of time and effort in the long run if it is controlled effectively. For any advice or product queries regarding Lameness in your flock, speak to one of our fully qualified RAMA’s (Registered Animal Health Advisor) in your local Harbro Country Store."

"At this time of year lameness can become a real issue in sheep. Having lame sheep has lots of implications, such as poor growth rates in lambs and is a major cause of financial loss. Luckily, there are many ways to help treat lameness in sheep and manage this properly. Speak to the RAMA (Registered Animal Health Advisor) in your local Harbro Store about lameness as they will give you expert advice and can dispense any of the products needed, such as footbaths, foot bath solution, sprays, trimming equipment, mineral supplements and vaccines."

🐎 Make sure your horse has constant access to fresh, clean water. This may mean adding an extra bucket into the field or stable, even if you have autofill troughs

🐎 Where possible look to increase airflow for stabled horses. If you're using things like fans to circulate air, gradually introduce to ensure horses become accustomed to the noise and the effect that the fan has so that it doesn’t spook them

🐎 Make sure during turnout that shelter and shade is available. Horses would use shelters more often in the Summer to get some respite from the sun and biting insects or flies

Some top tips for looking after the birds in your garden throughout the Summer months 🐦
🌞 Provide a regular supply of clean water for birds in a place free from harm e.g. out of reach of dogs. When it's a scorcher, adding ice helps your feathered friends stay cooler for longer
🌞 In the warm summer weather, homemade fat balls can melt so these should be avoided!
🌞 Adjust the quantity of food you provide to the demand - never allow uneaten foods to build up as this may lead to various complications so please remove any leftovers after three weeks
