Christian Aid

We exist to create a world where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty.

11/08/2024

In times of uncertainty and challenge, let these words remind us of the strength and serenity we can find in faith.

Embrace the peace that is offered to us and let it guide your heart.

The horrific murder of children in Southport is utterly abhorrent. Christian Aid stands in prayer with their families and the communities that are hurting.

The violent racist riots that have emerged since represent the worst of our common humanity.

Join us in prayer for the people of Bangladesh 🙏

With escalating protests and the Prime Minister’s resignation and flight from the country, the situation remains uncertain. Please lift up our colleagues in Dhaka and our partner organisations, asking for their protection and strength.

May God’s peace and wisdom guide all involved.

As the fastest men in the world compete in the 100m final today, remember that the race against climate change is ongoing 🏃

From rising temperatures to extreme weather, the impact of the climate crisis is undeniable. And the communities worst affected have contributed little to cause the problem.

As countries convene in Paris for the Olympics, we can't help but be reminded of the injustice of the climate crisis.

💬 'The Olympics is one of the few times the whole world comes together. It’s a useful reminder that we all share this precious, common home.

'We can see around the world the suffering caused by even the current level of climate change. Until we get emissions under control and increase support for those on the front lines, the crisis will only get worse' - Etienne Stott, 2012 Team GB's canoe slalom gold medallist.

We need urgent and collective action now.

The actions (or inactions) of world leaders today will determine the future of our planet.

Our world is suffering under the weight of the climate crisis, and it’s impacting our those who have done the least to cause it.

As the Olympics inspire us with athletes breaking records, we must not forget that climate records break communities.

Join us in prayer 🙏

Pray for world leaders to take the bold steps to support climate vulnerable communities.

26/07/2024

With all eyes on Paris, we must focus on every world record being broken.

🔥 This year’s Games are expected to be the hottest in history.

This serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the climate crisis.

Historic records should be for athletes alone🥇

'And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning—you must walk in it.' - 2 John 1:6 (NRSV)

Today, consider who you can walk beside or break bread with.

Just wow 🤯 We’re totally blown away by this fundraising story…

Meet Anne Baker. This adventurous, 70-year-old fundraiser recently took to the skies for a sponsored skydive, raising over £1,000 for vulnerable communities worldwide 🪂

Reflecting on her experience, Anne said: 'The free fall was terrifying, but once the parachute opened, it was exhilarating. It was a beautiful sunny day with just a few wispy clouds.

Part of the Christian Aid team at St Mary the Virgin Church, Anne leapt at the opportunity to skydive, choosing an extraordinary way to raise funds for a cause close to her heart.

'At 70, I was definitely the "Granny" of the group, but I'm so pleased to have had the experience.'

Three cheers for the Anne's incredible bravery and dedication 🙌

'Why must children pay such a horrendous price?' - Mais Abdel Hadi, Gaza

Today, we were at No. 10 Downing Street to hand in letters from children in Gaza to the Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Rev Claire Whitmore and Christian Aid International Director Ray Hasan delivered the letters from children including the Palestinian Children’s Council President Mais Abdel Hadi.

Only an immediate and permanent ceasefire, halting arms sales, and access to aid can stop the suffering.

You can join the children of Gaza in taking action, by writing to your newly elected MP: https://caid.org.uk/AXS

We've joined 19 other UK charities to collectively call on the new UK Government to take urgent and decisive action to address the humanitarian crisis.

It's time the UK Government demonstrates international leadership to prevent atrocities and even greater mass loss of life in .

They must ensure an immediate and permanent ceasefire, access to aid, halt arms transfers to Israel and uphold international justice and humanitarian law.

100 days into the new UK government will be over 1 year since October 7.

Respond with the boldness, urgency and seriousness required.

We're excited to announce that we have renewed our joint work to overcome global injustice and poverty with The Methodist Church.

🙏 Since 2018, around 900 Methodist churches have raised £1.88m to support our local partners to respond to humanitarian emergencies. Our renewed agreement will explore new collaboration opportunities, including cooperating with partner churches in countries we work in.

💬 Patrick Watt, our Chief Executive, said:

'The world faces huge challenges, with the climate crisis and conflict hitting the poorest and most vulnerable hardest. The Methodist Church is one of our most valued partners, and I look forward to the benefits of our strengthened collaboration.'

07/07/2024

🌍 Today, we lift up our global neighbours in communities facing natural disasters, conflict and unrest.

Please join us in prayer 🙏

As we pray, we reflect on Psalm 46:1: 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'

Lord, hear our prayers for these nations and their people. May your presence be felt in their midst, bringing comfort, peace, and restoration.

Today is your opportunity show up for those on the margins of society.

📣 We're calling on the next UK Government to act on poverty.

Use your vote. Make your voice heard.

This is faith in action.

Ahead of the UK General Election, we encourage you to think about the spirit of John's epistle:

💬 ' Let us love not in Word and speech, but in action and truth'.

What does it mean for UK Christians as we prepare for a new UK Parliament?

The new Parliament will be a fresh start and an opportunity to tell your MP's what matters to you and to your church.

A Christian Aid, we urge you to engage with your MP and encourage them to take action on poverty both around the world and in Britain.

In Honduras, indigenous women and youth face barriers in decision-making and representation, perpetuating cycles of marginalisation and poverty.

1️⃣ One year into our partnership with USAID - US Agency for International Development, the ‘Reducing conflict through indigenous women and youth' initiative has ignited a powerful movement. We've gathered, bringing together 170 voices, to champion human rights, preserve culture and promote civic engagement.

This project is more than empowerment; it's about forging unity among diverse voices to build safer societies and resolve conflicts.
When women and youth are empowered to lead, they become catalysts for lasting peace ✊

This marks just the beginning of this partnership, leaning on years of valuable lessons learned in collaboration with indigenous leaders and communities in Honduras.

Here’s what we got up to last Saturday 📸

We were so blessed to join hundreds of Christians at Emmanuel Smith’s .

It was a powerful evening of praise and worship, and an opportunity to share more about who we are.

In case you missed it:

👋Hi, we’re Christian Aid. We exist to create a world free from povery. Our belief that poverty can be ended is based on our understanding of scripture and the work of a creative, loving God.

With your help, we can make a difference.

23/06/2024

Please join us in prayer 🙏

We believe everyone is equal in the sight of God.

We continue to pray and act for the liberation from poverty for all people.

Wouldn’t it be amazing, we thought, if we could find a way to bring to Greenbelt the best artistry, activism and belief from anywhere on the planet, without also bringing the tonnes of carbon that comes with it?

That’s why we’re so thrilled to present No Fly Zone: a brand new venue at Greenbelt Festival created in collaboration with Christian Aid. Connecting the world without costing the earth. 🤝

No Fly Zone will use amazing AV and industrial-strength broadband to hook up the global village to Greenbelt’s festival fields, without flying folks across the world.

🙌 No Fly Zone will focus on a different aspect of Christian Aid’s work each day of the festival – racial justice, economic justice and climate justice – with a mix of provocation, education and inspiration. It’ll also screen some wonderful films in the venue, too – including Tinderbox, After the Flood, I Am Somebody and Song of the Prophets.

Our joint hope is that No Fly Zone will be a space protected from the usual march of globalisation: held open, like a buffer, a space in which we can think and see differently.

❤️ No Fly Zone is a space where we'll listen for another world that might be possible – and where, like Arundhati Roy, we might even hear her breathing.

♥ What a way to spend your sapphire wedding anniversary!

Retired nursery teacher, Shirley, from Newcastle, is a Christian Aid teacher and speaker who signed up to volunteer shortly before the pandemic.

⛪Her last volunteer assignment, speaking at St Mary's Church in Wooler, was on her sapphire wedding anniversary - so she decided to take along her husband of 45 years, Ron!

Shirley came across her volunteering roles after retiring: 'I looked for things to do to add to the choirs and orchestra I’m in and which might use my skills as a former teacher and social worker.'

'I responded to a Christian Aid advert for speakers and teachers and met our local Church Engagement and Fundraising Officer.'

Shirley describes how Christian Aid has always been ‘my charity’: 'From time to time I have rattled cans, joined events, and helped organise them.'

💬 'We have all kinds of roles from fundraising to helping at festivals and we’d be delighted to have more people sign up and be a part of something truly inspiring.'

Are you feeling as inspired as we are? In celebration of 40 years of Volunteers' Week, why not check out some of the ways that you can get involved?

🌟 Christian Aid Week was definitely newsworthy!

So many of you took on 'so many ways' and raised so much that you made it to the local news. All in the name of a more just world!

🔎 Here are a few of our favourite news pieces from this year's Christian Aid Week.

Meet our friend, Ian! 👋

After studying his Master's Degree in International Relations, Ian decided to dedicate his free time to volunteering as a Constituency Campaigner.

Ian is passionate about world politics, global development and making a difference. In his role, he travels up and down Nottingham speaking to faith groups about the issues around climate change, and how they can engage with local MPs to call for more action.

💬 'I’ve always been interested in politics and philosophy and am hoping to develop a career in international relations. In addition, since my mid-teens, I’ve been fascinated with the idea that a few can change the lives of millions.

Growing up, I’ve realised my mission in life is to be part of that change for good, hence my involvement with Christian Aid.'

On top of this, Ian is also joining our Greenbelt team this year as a supporter engagement volunteer, engaging festival-goers in Christian Aid’s work. Wow!

🔎 This Volunteers Week, we're so inspired by Ian's dedication and sacrifice. Read more about his story and get involved today: https://caid.org.uk/AVF
