In 1952 the Gotham Manufacturing Co. Of Rhode Island introduced its “Trend” range, the last designs by J Russell Price for Gotham as in 1953 he left to become a design director for Royal Doulton in England. These sterling silver candle holders were filled with concrete and could be used individually or stacked as the contemporary advertisement shows. They are a great example of American modernist design. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1201175209

This vesta is engraved with the badge of the 12th Service Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. It was raised in 1914 as part of the New Army and disbanded in February 1918. During its short existence it fought at Delville Wood, Thiepval and Passchendaele as part of 18th Division. 43,000 men of the Division were killed.
The vesta was made in 1903 so the engraving is later. Quite possibly this was a present to a soldier or a keepsake for a lover. It has little wear so I leave it up to the reader to draw their own conclusions. I hope they are probably wrong but I fear they are right. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1367471117

Sampson Mordan + Asprey + Art Deco + golf… for some collectors this almost defines the Holy Grail. In the 1930s Asprey sold golf multitools like this one. Some were more complex and had ivorine scoring tablets and others sliders to count score. This one may be the simplest design having pencil, knife and a divot repair tool. It has clearly had use, a nice touch as so often these high end items were given as gifts and kept as keepsakes. No monogram or engraving and completely useable today. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/998607874

Norwegian silver gilt enamel demitasse spoons made and marked by Gustav Gaudernack after 1910. Chief designer for David Andersen and responsible for most of Andersen ‘s best (prize winning) Jugendstil production. Born in Bohemia and a contemporary of Klimt, Otto Wagner and Koloman Moser he was a leading exponent of the Art Nouveau and deserves to be better know. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1708045408

The Calla Lily is one of the most highly regarded designs that Gertrude Engel delivered for Danish silversmith Anton Michelsen. This modernist necklace and clip on earrings set was hallmarked in both Denmark and London in 1957. It is made of sterling silver spathes with gold spadix. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1152892906

Chinese silver s***f or pill box made by MK (Cantonese 2nd half of 19th century) with gilded interior. A lovely tactile antique of great quality and complexity of shape. Probably made for the local market rather than Export. ***fbox https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/854163629

Th is very ordinary looking pair of Newcastle silver spoons were made by Langlands and Robertson in 1786. A nice pair of spoons by a good maker and a decent set of hallmarks. So why am I bothering to share them? Simply because to a collector they have a very special feature. They have an incused duty mark. If you have never heard of an incused duty mark then you will be thinking so what? But if you are interested in silver hallmarks it is a rare find as the duty mark punch was only introduced in 1784 and the punch used here, the in used punch, was scrapped after 18months as it caused to much damage. But these spoons were marked in 1786. Perhaps Newcastle was too far away from London for the assayers to be overly bothered to implement the change. So just an oddity but to the collector it is the oddities that can drive addiction! https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1451641599

Art deco Chinese Export silver ice bucket in snakeskin finish and cartouche with silver drainer. Made by Zeesung who was retailing in Shanghai. Possibly part of an entire cocktails set including shaker and tools, this was probably made for a member of the Western Expat community at the height of the Shanghai 1930s swinging party scene. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1013131349

Michael Powolny was a renowned ceramic designer in Austria in the first half of the 20th century. He was a founder of the Wiener Werkstatte and also worked as a designer for the Auergarten ceramic factory. This foal is modelled from a c**t from the Lipizzaner horses at the Spanish Riding School and dates from 1913 to 1934. **tfoal

This 30cm high beer glass was probably made in Bohemia towards the end of the 18th century. It can best be dated from the coronet in the engraving, which is for a noble of the Holy Roman Empire. Napoleon dissolved the Empire in 1806 so it must be older than that.
Glasses like this were made for high ceremonial, often for toasting political alliances or family events. It was usual for nobles to send such items to the Imperial Court as gifts to enhance their status and as a sign of their wealth. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1706012609

Late Victorian cream pail made by George Maudsley Jackson in 1895 and a christening gift for Henry Fane of Fulbeck Lincolnshire. Lovely condition with original blue glass liner. Probably never used. Surely every baby boy needs a silver pail for his clotted cream with nursery tea! https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1708714227

Thomas Stevens was the best known of the late 19th and early 20th century silk picture makers. These were very popular as they were a (relatively) cheap way of bringing colour ornament to the home. In the days before colour photography most people were used to only seeing black and white images of people and places. Colour printing did exist but lacked the fine details and vivid hues that silk could deliver.
This Stevengraph is one of a very popular set of famous politicians. Disraeli was Queen Victoria’s favourite and she created him Earl of Beaconsfield. They remain popular amongst collectors of political and domestic social history. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1407309827

Not all Art Deco ceramics are brightly painted or by well known designers and manufacturers. Not need they be expensive. This little basket was probably made for flowers or sweets. It is by Fieldings Crown Devon and dates to between 1939 and 1942, at which point the manufacture of “luxury “ items was banned until after the war. I think the mottled pale blue glaze allows the purity of the lines to shine through. This basket was introduced about 1935 and can be found with far more complex and garish decorations which over power the lines of the ceramic. . https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1321025657

This is a very strange set of silver gilt spoons made by Saunders & Shepherd in London in 1892. As well as Prince of Wales feathers and Britannia, the finials have tiny statues of John Bull and a highlander in a kilt. There is also a sceptre with the date as part of the stem. There is no obvious reason for them to be made.
Saunders and Shepherd were renowned for high quality casting and I wonder if they are samples. #1892 https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/814521453

Robert Welch designed a range of tablewares to be made by craftspeople in the Shetlands in the late 1980s and sold in his Chipping Camden shop. One of the most interesting is the butter knife that has a 3 dimensional cast representation of the market hall which is virtually opposite the shop. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1200606187

Today I started playing with AI imagery. I asked dall.e to create a Clarice Cliff style sparrowbeak milk jug. This is the result. Not great but not bad for a 2 year old piece of software. Antiques community beware… AI is coming to get you !

Grats Pottery coffee can and saucer mentioned in the December 1933 edition of the Pottery and Glass Record. The pattern name is Lilac and it is pattern number A1085.
It is probably one of the designs by the “Paintress Designer” Mary Salt from Susie Cooper’s band of the very best painters at the factory who were trusted to paint their own ideas.

Austrian Art Nouveau or perhaps Secessionist cross on a handmade trombone link chain. The cross is decorated with foliage and studded with pine cones. The 30 inch long chain is hand made. Hallmarks are tiny but clearly 800 grade silver and suggest a date of 1900 to 1910. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1593649176

Jakob Bengel Bauhaus necklace of avant garde form made in Germany about 1930. The blue leaves are made of Galalith, an early plastic, and the chrome is plated brass. Made by Grange Jeune ofvParisnatbtheirbfactorybin Thiers, the historic French cutlery capital between 1890 and 1900, this desert serving set would have been at home in a Parisienne ladies salon where the Dreyfus Affair or post impressionist works of Seurat might be discussed.

A very striking design by renowned New Zealand Art Deco designer Keith Murray. This is one of his Machine Age designs for Mappin and Webb that evolved from those produced for Wedgwood.

This is a sugar caster but the identical form was also made as a small pepperette and a larger cocktail shaker.

This set of 12 teaspoons and sugar tongs were made by James Dixon and retailed by Garrard in 1913. Norwegian enamel sterling silver spoons made before 1910 by Aksel Holmsen and sold in Bergen. Holmsen was an apprentice and worked for David Andersen until 1904. Very detailed Art Nouveau or Jugendstil style. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1183836998

Victorian ladies’ sterling silver belt buckle, Birmingham 1888. Smaller than a nurse’s buckle and very wearable today. Very sharp hand punching makes it resemble marcasites. A typical example of a fashion accessory at the time when corsets and bustles were all the rage. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1674699613

Wonderful vintage Sheffield made scissors made about 1970 and used to open a new office building in Cardiff as part of the post war regeneration project. A historic curio that would make wonderful gift for a dress maker or other sewing enthusiast. Or if you have an official opening coming up why not give them a second chance at life as I bet they have only ever cut 2 inches of ribbon. https://andantiquesetc.etsy.com/listing/1674711531

Stepping out on a second career...

Recently established in St Albans, AND Antiques & Collectables is a primarily on-line business focusing on decorative arts from circa 1870 to 1935; the time of the Aesthetic, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil and Art Deco movements including more generally Arts and Crafts. In particular we are interested in designers and manufacturers who made for Liberty & Co of London, but more generally all good design falls within the scope of our collection and can be found in our on-line shop.

We set the business up after long careers in the technology business and in international trading. The planets seem to have come into alignment and suddenly we had the chance to turn the hobby of being collectors into a business opportunity. These are early days still but we seem to be doing things right and are adding to our stock ever week and trying to improve our (these days essential) on-line and social networking presence.

We particularly enjoy attending auctions in person and wading through the mass of on-line auction offerings hoping to spot items that are under the radar of trade and collectors. Sometimes we follow our gut feel if something simply looks good and that often leads to hours of research, both online and in traditional written sources either from our own published collection or in the British Library where we are to be found typically one day a week. It is only in libraries such as the British Library and Victoria & Albert Museum library where both scarce out of print books but more importantly old exhibition and trade catalogues are to be found. These, as in the case of a Mintons Secessionist jug currently in the store, can answer questions of age, the meaning of marks and attribution of designers. The researches that we do to accompany our collection (we hope) add interest and context to our store. Please browse and let us have feedback.

Next week no doubt we will be out and about hunting down new pieces from WMF (rapidly becoming one of my favourite manufacturers), Liberty & Co and anything else that takes pour fancy and that we think our customers might like too. However the main focus is to select the stock, design the display and start on producing the descriptive tickets that we will affix when we show at the St Albans Antiques Fair at Oaklands College, run by Haddon Fairs, on 17 November. We would love to meet you and chat to you and find out what you might be looking for. If you are there please come and say hello.
