We had a brilliant day at the Wessex BBA winter contest in Bournemouth yesterday.

As well as an excellent overall result of 3rd place, we achieved 2nd place in the March.

Our superb Horns and Trombones both were recipients of the best sections on the day.

A great end to our first contest with Will Wilkins in the middle.

We are now looking forward to the festive season, and to preparing works in the new year for various contests.

We Will Remember Them

At our Remembrance Day Concert, as well remembering all the men and women who gave their lives in service, we will also be commemorating the dedicated service of Derek Morris and Jeff Selway to the band.

Jeff joined the band over 50 years ago and was a fine flugel horn and cornet player, who also served as treasurer of the band for many years.

Derek joined as a junior over 60 years ago, and played BBb bass in the band whilst also undertaking the role of band Chaiman.

Such long service with one band is rare, so it would be great to see former members of the band and friends of Derek and Jeff at this concert to celebrate the work of these 2 fine bandsmen.

The band were extremely pleased to return to the Thurrock Rugby Club to perform as an Oompah band, part of the Oktoberfest.

The band played traditional Oompah music such as waltzes, marches and polkas as well as modern dancing music which included favourites like Agadoo, the Birdie song, Amarillo and Go West by the Pet Shop Boys.

There was a selection of fantastic games such as Stack the cups, Donkey Races and Oktoberfest quiz. Well done to everyone who dressed up. A fantastic evening had by all!

On Saturday evening the Aveley & Newham band were guests of the Chelmsford Salvation Army Band. The concert was to raise funds for the Salvation Army in Ukraine.

We had a very enjoyable evening under the direction of our new MD Will Wilkins, who took up the post on the 1st September, along with Chelmsford SA MD, Alex Campbell.

In addition to the brass bands the Chelmsford Songsters gave us a respite, and performed with great spirit.

The concert was very well received by the audience.

The Chelmsford SA band opened preceedings with a Salvation Army favourite, Soldiers of Christ. This was followed by the British National Anthem, and then with both bands playing the Ukranian National Anthem.

The first half each band played a selection of their own choices of pieces.

For the second half the bands joined en masse. The sound may well have carried all the way around Essex.

Here are a few photos showing the full might of the combined bands, and the songsters in full swing.

We look forward to further collaborations with the Chelmsford Salvation Army.

Currently with a membership of 25 traveling from London, Essex, Kent and Suffolk rehearsing at our own band hall on Monday and Thursday evenings at 8pm.

Expressions of interest should be sent to, [email protected] together with a brief description of previous experience.

Today we have said goodbye to Jeff Selway. One of the best bandsmen you could meet. An officer of the band in as many positions as you can think of, and a wonderful and funny man, who could be serious when needed.

Jeff was also a very important member of the Thurrock Rugby Union Club, as a player and officer.

As a Maths teacher who gave knowledge and confidence to all he taught, he will be sadly missed.

A truly great loss to so many.

16/12/2021

Tonight we have said goodbye to the Legend that was Derek John Morris.

A fantastic bandsman, and a truly wonderful man to know.

"A great friend to many people and we will never see his like again." ... Jimmy Walker, life long friend.

We will never be able to fill your seat.

R.I.P Derek
