The Rotary Club of Carlisle Castle

New members are always welcome! We'd love to hear from you! Contact us via Facebook or visit our website to see more details.

We meet at 7pm on Thursdays on Zoom most weeks, but are gradually starting to have face to face meetings in various locations. We have guest speakers at some of our Zoom meetings and we welcome guests to those and any other meetings.

A busy 24 hours for our club recently! We enjoyed a great night at Penrith Rotary Club’s annual dinner, with music from the excellent Committed2Rock choir. The following morning we planted 1000 crocus bulbs with the Friends of Hammonds Pond - the flowers will be purple - the colour signifies Rotary’s ongoing commitment to rid the world of polio. 😀

We’ve just been doing our sums and we’ve donated £7000 to charity in the past 2 years.

The money came from our Santa Sleigh runs, our wishing well at Houghton Hall, our annual quiz and a music night - thank you to everyone who has donated!

Here are a few of the charities we’ve supported with your help -

Cumbria Winter Warmth
Ukrainian Babies
Calvert Trust
Carlisle Key
Shelterbox
Oak Tree Animal Rescue
Cornerstone
Hospice at Home
Diabetes Research
Generators for Ukraine
Race Against Dementia
Pancreatic Cancer Research
Eden Valley Hospice
Carlisle One World

We had a fascinating tour recently of a part of our city which has changed a lot in the last 20 years. One of our members lives on the estate where the old Garlands Hospital used to be so before we tucked into a lovely meal at his house he took us on a historical walk to make room for all those calories! 😀🧀🍰

Alice in Wonderland as you’ve never seen it before! Some of our members enjoyed another great production from “The Pantaloons” at Talkin Tarn recently. Lots of audience participation including one of our members taking on the role of a dancing sugar cube! 🕺😆

Happy New Year! The Rotary year starts in July and our new President is Phil who takes over from Stuart. Phil’s first duty was to welcome our new member, Estelle. Phil’s vision is for the club to do even more to help those people in our community who need a bit of extra support. ❤️

Some of our members and friends had a go at pickleball recently. It’s a cross between tennis and table tennis and it was really good fun! The ball travels a bit more slowly though which makes it a good game for a range of ages and abilities. 🏓🎾😀

Watch out - there are axe throwers about! 🪓😆 🤣 What a great time some of our members had recently at The Lumber Lounge and we’re happy to report that we all left with all our fingers and toes intact! Good fun and very well run. 😀

The crocuses planted by our club and the Friends of Rickerby Park are looking stunning in the sunshine! Purple signifies Rotary’s campaign to rid the world of polio. Clubs have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours over the past 35 years to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries.

Members of our club and the two other local Rotary clubs will be collecting in the city centre today to raise money for ShelterBox - it provides tents and other essential items to support people in disaster areas around the world

11/02/2023

After seeing the terrible scenes in Syria and Turkey, our club is donating £500 to Shelterbox, a charity which provides a family with a box containing a large tent and other essential equipment after disasters like this. We are also donating £500 to a charity run by another Rotary club which is currently supplying generators to hospitals in Ukraine to help with the ongoing power issues there. If you have donated to our club through things like our annual quiz, our wishing well at Houghton Hall or the Santa Sleigh then thank you - we can only do things like this with your support.

If you would like to make a donation direct to the charities we’ve mentioned then you can find more info here -

We are delighted at how much money we’ve managed to raise for charity again this Christmas - nearly £6000 raised by us and the other two local Rotary clubs plus supporters - truly amazing given the tough times we are living through. After a small deduction to cover the running costs, the money will be divided among charities supported by the clubs. Charities in the past have included the local food bank, Hospice at Home and the Cumbria Community Foundation’s Winter Warmth Fund. 😀 🎅

Another great Christmas for the Rotary Santa Sleigh in Carlisle! Along with teams from the other two local Rotary Clubs plus our friends and supporters we were out pretty much every night from 10th December onwards meeting lots of excited families and collecting money for charity. Roll on next Christmas! 🎄😀🎅

Our club sourced and planted hundreds of tiny tree saplings or whips for the Queen’s Green Canopy - as well as hundreds of crocus bulbs - in Heysham Park recently. It was a great joint effort with the city council’s Green Spaces team and their volunteers. Doing our bit to help the planet! 😀 🌳 🌳

Another great night at our annual quiz recently with a profit of over £500 which will go to charities supported by Rotary - organisations supported in the past include the hospice and the food bank. Well done to the winning team and thank you so much to everyone who came along! 😀👏

It’s almost time for our fantastic annual charity quiz but we need to find the trophy first! 😆 The team that last won it (in 2019) went by the name of Deputy Dawgs - was that you or do you know them? Please share this post and if you do know where the trophy is then please DM us or comment below. 😀

Some of our members were up and about early to do a litter pick at Carlisle Castle recently! Given the name of our club we thought it would be nice to link up with the folks at the castle from time to time in future - and they were more than happy to link with us! A nice way to start our new Rotary year. ( the year runs from the beginning of July) 😀

08/06/2022

To help others, to make a difference - and - to have fun doing it. Fancy joining us?! Or know someone who might? Bel is our incoming President and she and the team are just finalising plans for the new Rotary year which starts in early July. Watch this space! 😀🕺🥂🍰

Chocolate-making, exotic animals, cheese tasting and art classes - plus lots of food, laughs and a tiny bit of alcohol. 😉 Our members had a fantastic time on our latest Mystery Weekend! Come and join our club and you could be doing things like this too! 😀🕺🥂🍰

Wonderful! A local business owner has matched our donation to an appeal to help the people of Ukraine. Andrew Bailey who owns J Balchin and Son has given £500 to the Rotary in Cumbria and Lancashire’s Ukraine appeal. Thank you so much Andrew. He told us - “what’s happening in Ukraine is terrible. When I saw that the club was donating money to a Rotary appeal to help the people there I knew I wanted to do the same. I’m a former Rotarian and I know that any money donated to Rotary will be well looked after and spent wisely.” ❤️

13/03/2022

Our club is donating £500 to help the people of Ukraine. This is thanks to the generosity of local people, including donations dropped into our wishing well at Houghton Hall Garden Centre. One of Rotary’s guiding principles is promoting peace across the world and like everyone else we have been deeply moved by the images coming out of Ukraine. (Our donation will be sent via Rotary in Cumbria and Lancashire’s Ukraine appeal).

24/02/2022

In the past decade, Rotary clubs in Ukraine, Russia, and nearby countries have transcended national differences and have actively engaged in peace building projects to promote goodwill and to marshal assistance for the victims of war and violence. The members of the Rotary Club of Carlisle Castle stand with all those who strive for peace at this very difficult time. 🕊 ❤️

Our first face to face meeting in ages! 😀 We reverted to online conference calls for our weekly meetings late last year but a meal and a chat in the pub is SO much nicer! 🍷

Wow! The sleigh runs this Christmas collected a total of £7000 for charities supported by Rotary. People were very generous and of course loved seeing Santa and his sleigh. Charities including Hospice at Home and North Cumbria Rescue and Response are just two of the many that will be benefitting. Worth all the hard work by our members and those of the other teams. Roll on Christmas 2022! 😀
