✨ Ancient Rome ✨How cute are my primary 1/2 children’s drawings of Roman soldiers! This topic could be easily adapted for all ages. If anyone would like the link to anything or want anymore detail just let me know below.

We learned about the Romans and the impact they have had on today’s world, from their art and culture to their engineering feats such as aqueducts, architecture and roads. We explored the daily life of a Roman and made comparisons between then and the present day. We applied our knowledge of Roman numerals to create coins out of clay and spent a lot of time in the construction area building the Colosseum and other famous landmarks. We wrote some fantastic character descriptions and also linked science, exploring materials.

Some children have asked to learn about inventions next term. Has anyone done this before? Any inventions/inventors your class have particularly enjoyed learning about? Thanks 😊

✨DIY house ✨ Swipe for the before

Stayed back after school tonight to decorate this little house. I’ve wanted a house for my small world area for a while and I found this crib in the Christmas cupboard at school. Just used a couple of samples of wallpaper from Dunelm to cover the walls, floor and furniture, along with a few loose parts, and I’m quite happy with how it turned out. I can’t wait to decorate it for Christmas 😅

I really want to change up my small world area. Has anyone any budget friendly ideas?

🍃How I explored the Global Goals with my class 🍃
✨ Swipe for teaching ideas and book recommendations linked to the Goals we explored and save for next year.

My favourite topic to teach in Primary 1/2 was Global Goals. It allowed us to learn all about the Sustainable Development Goals and identify ways that we can make a difference.

I loved doing this topic with Primary 6/7 last year (there’s a post on my feed somewhere) and I knew I wanted to adapt it to suit primary 1/2. I decided to use books to approach each topic such as deforestation, plastic pollution and global warming. I have attached a picture with the books we read throughout the term and some gaols that can be linked to each book.

I was amazed at the discussions that took place between the children during this topic and the empathy they showed for animals and our environment 💚

✨ If you have any questions or want more info about any resources just ask below and I can dm you from there! I know and have explored them with their children too 😊

✨ New teacher diary and 6 Work-life balance tips that have helped me 😍 Swipe and save for August!

Ad - gifted. Does anyone else love getting a new planner or diary for the next academic year? How beautiful is this diary from 😍 I prefer an A5 size diary so this is perfect! It has everything I need from a weekly spread with plenty of space and a to-do list on the side. Will share the inside of the diary on my stories.

I thought whilst sharing I’d also share what I’ve done to improve my work-life balance over the years.

In August, I jumped from 6 years in P6/7 (Y5/6) to P1/2 (R/Y1) and completely underestimated how challenging it was going to be. Shout out to all the eyfs teachers and nursery practitioners out there! 🙌

✨ Paper Cup Stack ✨

My class really enjoyed using this cup stacking activity to practise time, so I’ve made some for money too which I’ll be teaching over the next few weeks. It’s such a quick activity to set up, so I’ve made a few others (swipe to see a few of them). I saw the idea on Pinterest by so thank you 😊

I just write the words/numbers on stickers. I have a set of cups in school with whiteboard stickers that I got on Amazon. You could pop a bit of tape on them instead to make them reusable.

Any ideas of what others I could make?

🌸 Also if you’d like a copy just like the post and comment below 🤍 I can also send a blank copy too!

☁️ Sentences we are proud of FREEBIE ☁️

We had a look through some of our recent pieces of writing and chose our favourite sentence. I love doing this because it’s an easy way to provide children with an opportunity to reflect on their learning and all children have something to be proud of at the end of the activity, which builds confidence and motivation. It’s also a lovely way to display all children’s work, as I have limited wall space. I’ve still got a few to put up!

✨FREE RESOURCE ✨

I’ve always loved using visuals to support all children, such as visual timetables, vocabulary mats, check-ins, for writing etc., but to be honest I always thought the whole voice-o-meter/noise-o-meter resource was a bit of a gimmick after trying it with my first class a few years ago. Turns out I was wrong! 😅 I’ve been using this in my class the past few months and it’s worked really well. I do think it needs to be modelled daily, so children actually know what is expected of them, and not solely dictated by the teacher. Asking children what environment they want to work in works quite well in my class, and they generally like to have quiet time for reading and writing, partner or group talk for maths etc. Don’t get me wrong, there are days when it doesn’t work perfectly, but used consistently it does help.
