I have just received an email from Laura Edwards at our Head Office with the above as the subject matter, requesting a Waiver to be signed for our upcoming Annual Conference. I think you may need more than a waiver for that combination of activities Laura! My daughter Issy was riding a Quad Bike in Indonesia a few months ago and managed to ditch it into a paddy field from a raised track…and she wasn’t even trying to throw an axe or line up a crossbow at the time! 😂🤣😂
I know it takes a lot of juggling to deal with buildings insurance claims, but that is just asking for a completely different type of claim!

Out in the early evening sunshine last night meeting a couple of brickies to discuss the reinstatement works required after a car was reversed into this commercial unit. There was a last-minute issue with keys, and I pictured myself wearing concrete boots this morning having wasted their time! 🤣
Since I built my first house in my 20’s I seem to have always had a love/hate relationship with brickies. The best brickie I ever had was on that first house and his finishing work on interior walls was phenomenal. Unfortunately, he had far too many “wet days”! In a state of exasperation, I said to him one day “John, why do you only work four days a week?” and he looked at me as if I was a young whipper snapper, which with hindsight I clearly was, and said “Because I can’t manage to live if I only work three days a week!” End of conversation…

The “A” team…or should that be the “A List Team”?! 💥
My daughter Issy and I attended the end of season awards night for the Aspray Chester Deeside Dragons Ice Hockey Club at Village Hotel Chester St David's. What a super night, and great to see and hear the enthusiasm for everyone involved in getting the team on the ice competing right through the season.
Congratulations to everyone, especially the award winners.
ps. I was surprised that I didn’t get an award for the most enthusiastic penalty video! 🎤 😂

I live in West Kirby and the recently completed flood defences got their first serious trial this morning. The construction you see above ground is nothing compared to the piling and concrete below ground…all adding up to a cost in the region of £25m. It’s perhaps not as 100% effective as a lot of residents expected, but as soon as you put a wall in front of a wave it will try to go over it! How much worse would it have been without the flood defences?!
The video is taken outside a four-storey house which was redesigned by an architect I use, with the building works completed earlier this year! Fortunately, even although the owners may be devastated, at least the flood is restricted to the garage.

One Love
I was in a house last week, just round the corner from the Deeside Ice Rink, and noticed an old poster made up of hundreds of Bob Marley photos…I commented on it and the policyholder replied saying “I love his music, and he’s special to me as my partner knew him…and supplied w**d to him when he was in the UK”! Straight off the bat with no hesitation, from an elderly lady who suffered a dual stroke and the loss of her partner a few years ago. I looked at a photo of her with her partner, a big guy with a gold tooth who could have operated in Kingston, Jamaica, but who in his day was more of a “security guard” in Manchester, UK…and didn’t doubt her story!
A lovely lady who has had her best days, and I suspect plenty of wild ones! A tricky claim for both us and the insurer to deal with, but hopefully a pragmatic approach will see this one through to a successful conclusion.
One Love…and sadly she has lost hers. 😢

This is a great video from one of our Emergency Plumbers explaining how the wrong push-fit connector was knowingly used several years ago, and it was just a matter of time before it failed. Mains pressure hot water poured through the ceiling into the dining room for approximately one hour, and that's a lot of water!

As a result of Storms Isha and Jocelyn, the wee beasties have taken cover and have been particularly difficult to track down. I have it on good authority that a few haggis will be coming out of cover at dusk, and I’ll be ready to bag one!
This is a photo collage from last year and although the tradition of celebrating Burns Night continues, this year we are in a new home and will be without Issy who is currently in Indonesia. 😢

Back to work fully today after celebrating Hogmanay in Edinburgh.
A lovely walk around the towns working up an appetite for a haggis supper before bringing in the bells with fireworks at the Pulp concert in the gardens under the castle. Back to my sister’s for a square sausage breakfast bagel and then chilled out smelling the traditional steak pie cooking for Ne’erday dinner. Link sausages were first added to a Scottish steak pie many years ago as a cheaper form of meat. My sister uses top quality beef, and the sausages still remain the favourite for most around the table. I didn’t manage a Scotch pie so will have to head back soon…

This was me at the weekend with my trusty penguin aid hoping to be called up to play for the Aspray Chester Deeside Dragons Ice Hockey Club. 🤣
As a penguin aid would have been handy this morning to help get to my car, just a reminder to have a check around the exterior of your property for any maintenance issues which could lead to damage due to wintry weather. If you leave and return in the dark, put it on your weekend to do list. If you can, have a look in your attic for any exposed water pipes or tanks which could freeze.

I may be biased but I am a big fan of Flame, the Aspray Chester Deeside Dragons Ice Hockey Club mascot. This week’s selfie is with Anthony Gennadopoulos our marketing guru from Aspray Limited Head Office who popped down for last night’s game. Not the result we were hoping for but a great game with plenty of action!

On the first home game of the season for the Aspray Chester Deeside Dragons Ice Hockey Club it was a pleasure for me to present MVP to Jodie Alderson-Smith. Jodie is captain of Team Great Britain Women’s Ice Hockey Team and on a visit to Deeside on Sunday she heard that the Dragons were short benched and stepped up as an emergency guest signing. She played great, especially considering that she hadn’t trained with the team and got a warm welcome from the other players…who in case you didn't realise are all men! The fans also cheered her on and it was noticeable that the social media posts about her were very popular and extremely positive.
As an enthusiastic amateur fan, I never even thought that this was a possibility in what is without doubt a full contact sport . Well done to the coach Mike Clancy for grabbing the opportunity.
