GothsForSanctuaries - Twitch 17/11/2023

Hi all, transmitting right now over at Goths for Sanctuaries via Twitch is their latest online stream dedicated to raising funds for the Heartstone Veganic Sanctuary. In a few hours I'll be on it myself doing an online video mix that'll include a Curve track plus a couple of other Toni/Dean-related ones too. Times: 2100BST 'til 2300BST (i.e. 9pm 'til 11pm in the UK), though I'm also on an hour before that too playing videos by other bands related to the project.

Also, check out "Goths for Sanctuaries - The Album!!!" that's been released via Bandcamp - 185 tracks for just a tenner --> Bargain! I'll post link in comment below. Hope folks can tune in and, if you've got a Twitch account, join in the chat too. :) Cheers, DJ Dust x

GothsForSanctuaries - Twitch Born during lockdown 2020 so as to bring us all together, support the bands & DJs that kept us sane & to raise funds for animal sanctuaries around the world. Two festivals, an earthquake relief event & a co-curated album later, next is a two-part fest in Oct & Nov, with exclusive compilation album.

DAT BOX / prep for official bootleg series

The divine ice queen, Toni Halliday of Curve, grabbed my attention back in 1991.I was immediately smitten. She had everything I thought I ever wanted but would never secure for myself.
Four years later garbage was unleashed into the world. Many music critics pitted us against Curve, accusing us of ripping them off or stealing their sound. It is to this day, a comparison I don’t fully understand. To me there is a stronger connection, a more direct relationship between the Cocteau Twins and Curve than there is between Curve and garbage. Either way , it always felt like a massive compliment to be compared to such a great band and I was deeply thrilled. As time went on however the comparisons started to feel mean spirited and I began to feel decidedly uneasy . It felt very much like the patriarchal music press was hellbent on pitting two women in alternative rock against one another. It broke my heart when I was finally introduced to Toni backstage after one of our early London shows. I was so excited to meet her but she was rude and stand offish and made it glaringly apparent she was only in attendance to pay her respects to Butch.
I was mortally offended and embarrassed and for many years I felt pretty resentful at what felt like a deliberate cold shoulder . However much water has flowed under the bridge since then. I am much smarter than I once was about a whole plethora of people and things. Now I realize it wasn’t Toni I was offended by. It was the system in place that made a sport out of setting one female artist against another just to watch them duke it out to the detriment of them both.
I have nothing but admiration for Toni now and such a deep appreciation for Curve remains in my heart. The coast is clear still sounds magnificent and modern like many of their songs still do. I wish things had played out differently. I wish both Toni and I could have sat down that night we met and shot the s**t like we both deserved to.
I tell young artists all the time: There is room for all extraordinary creatures. Just do you. Keep your eyes fixed on the track. Think like a racehorse. And don’t forget, the horse running at your side is your ally not your enemy. 31/03/2020

Shirley Manson of Garbage shares her thoughts on Toni + Curve. I've never really understood the comparison between the 2 bands to be honest and now it's definitely clear that, as usual, it was the press that poisoned everything. Like always.

'Long Live the Collective Alternative Consciousness': An Interview with Curve legend DEAN GARCIA (SPC ECO, Inkraktare, S**U, etc) - WhiteLight//WhiteHeat 14/03/2020

"Toni Halliday and I wanted to make records and be as good as we could is all I know, as with everything they all have a different trajectory, It’s always very particular and personal as to what Curve means and how it affects people as it’s always very different from one person to the next, I feel we made a noise that reflected what was happening at that time, the alternative youth culture of the day, we slotted in with it all, again linked consciously and conceptually with bands like MBV JAMC and also tied in with The Prods, Chemicals and Aphex Twin, the Rave culture crossover that Primal Scream n Roses/ Mondays tapped into, Curve were part of it all, a rollercoaster of alternative thought and feels that transcend explanations, it just was and still is a collective expression of the great like-minded."
